ABSTRACT

In preparation of concrete canoe model, we followed Archimedes principle, which says that density of floating material should be less than that of liquid. From Archimedes principle we can say that for maximizing efficiency of canoe we have to maximize its volume and minimize its density . So according to given dimensions of canoe one can estimate maximum weight of water giving the Buoyant force (without making the boat to sink in water) =1000*0.08*0.6* 0.12 =5.76 kg. But above expression is obtained assuming that concrete has average density throughout the space, which is not true. Although, one can have an approximate idea about the maximum weight of canoe. In making of concrete model: We first made a mould made of Thermocol which we covered with polythene, so when at time of removing of mould there is no difficulty. We aimed to make the boat as light as possible so according to the resources available , we go for reinforcement by Plastic Fibre Mesh so that we can maintain the least thickness possible. The plastic fibre mesh was of 1mm approx. and to sustain the minimal forces we provide a width of 3mm (although practically it came to be non-uniform at some places) For floating purpose we are required less dense material at the same time we need good strength also. So we used cement : sand : water = 1 : 0.20 : 0.40.

We placed cement mortar in mold and compacted using vibration table, so that concrete can be properly filled in the mold.
