Mud is said to be contaminated when a foreign

material enters the mud system. This cause undesirable changes in mud properties such as density, viscosity or yield point. Gypsum act as mud contaminants and form of calcium sulphate (CaSO4) Contamination of gypsum leads to clay flocculation, increase in viscosity, yield strength, filtrate loss and gel strength. Sodium carbonate (Na2CO3) can added to treat mud.

Plastic viscosity (in centipoise-up): Plastic Viscosity = p = 600 RPM reading - 300 RPM

Reading Yield Point (in lb/100 ft2): Yield Point = Y. P. = 300 RPM Reading - Plastic Viscosity
