A biomechanical and histological study in the rabbit

Gottlow J, Barkarmo S, Sennerby l. results presented at the Toronto osseointegration conference, May 2008 Introduction The first objective of the present study was to compare shear strengths and removal torque at the bone-implant interface between the SlActive implants and the Tiunite implants. The

second objective was to evaluate histology at all sites. The hypothesis of the study was that SlActive implants would promote a superior osseointegation to the Tiunite implants as

evaluated by biomechanical and histological means.

Materials and Methods A total of 30 rabbits with a minimum age of 9 months were chosen for the study. Two test implants (Standard Plus, 4.1 mm, rn, SlActive , 8 mm) and two control implants

(replace Select Taper, 4.3 mm, Tiunite, 10 mm, corresponding to 8.5 mm Tiunite) were inserted in the tibia and one test and one control implant in the femur. The left and right side were randomized for test and control implants. 10 rabbits per time point were evaluated after 10 days, 3 weeks and 6 weeks of healing. Ten test and control implants per time point placed in the tibia were subject to shear strength testing. Thereby, the removal torque values were measured and the shear strength values subsequently calculated. Histology was evaluated at all implant sites. Results Shear strength At 10 days of healing, the SlActive implants yielded a higher mean shear strength value than the Tiunite implants without reaching statistical significance. The mean shear strength values for the SlActive implants were significantly higher at 3 weeks and 6 weeks compared to Tiunite implants (figure 1). removal torque values were equivalent for both the test and control sites at 10 days. At 3 weeks, removal torque values were significantly higher for SlActive compared to Tiunite .

Histological observation The histological evaluation is still in progress. Conclusion It can be concluded so far that the SlActive surface demonstrated significantly higher shear strength in the tibia of rabbits compared with the Tiunite surface at three and six weeks after implant placement.

Significantly higher shear strength values for SlActive after 3 and 6 weeks results showed that the implants with the SlActive surface positively influenced the interfacial shear strength in comparison with the implants with the Tiunite surface during early stages of bone healing after 3 and 6 weeks.

At 6 weeks, removal torque values were numerically higher for SlActive but did not reach significance.
