Chronic coughs last longer than 2 to 3 weeks. Some causes of chronic cough include: A cough is a reflex action to clear your airways of mucus and irritants such as dust or smoke. TYPES: A. According to productivity: Productive- A cough that brings up mucous or congestion o Asthma o Allergies o COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) o GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) o Pneumonia o Tuberculosis o Smoking o Throat disorders, such as croup in young children o Some medicines such as angiotensinconverting enzyme (ACE)-inhibitor drugs
Non-productive- A cough that is either dry or does not bring up any mucous.
