Stereotypes of Balkan in the Films about Dracula
The dual nature of Vlad Tepes (Dracula) has long been neglected by researches. According to some, vampires existed in European tradition since ancient times. However, the
concept, and the word vampire as well, became popular in Europe since 1720-ies. The world
most famous vampire was named in the work of Bram Stoker, Dracula (1897). Ever since,
he will be the most present vampire both in literature and in cinematography. The question
has been posed why the 15th century governor of Vallachia became the worlds most famous
vampire. Was it due to his cruelty, character of perhaps, Balkan ancestry? Cruelty and character
distinguished Dracula from the others, but there were other rulers who were cruel and brutal
for state reasons. Balkan ancestry had been extensively burdened by Byzantine and Ottoman
heritage, yet very specifical, which gave his a new dimension. It is that very combination
between his character and Balkan ancestry that picked him up. Therefore, there is no wonder
why Vlad Tepes (Dracula) had been shown as a metaphor for the Balkan case.
