KRISTIAN LALIBERTE
Kristian Laliberte, a
graduate of Columbia
University and Archives
Nationales in Paris, is
currently the Senior
Editor at Renery29.
From Fashion Week
reviews to the latest
art exhibition, Laliberte
tells R29s tapped-in
readers where to go,
what to do, and how to
stay stylish.
HOT SPOT: I never
get sick of Indochine.
It's right next to my
office, so I always try
to schedule any and all
dinners there. Without
fail, there's always
someone interesting
lounging in the booths.
HAVE TO HAVE: For
the summer, I want
my left wrist to sport
the Herms Cape Cod
PM watch.
WORK OF ART: In
terms of living artists,
Gerhard Richter just
fascinates me.
TIME TRAVELER: The
Beatrice Inn. While I
was a completely dif-
ferent person during its
heyday (read: young),
despite numerous
attempts, I honestly
don't think there's
been anything that's
recreated the magic.
MARK SQUIRES
Photographer Mark
Squires is a New York
City native who focuses
on fashion, beauty and
celebrity. Squires' work
has been featured in
fashion glossies such
as Vogue, Harper's
Bazaar and ELLE. He
has photographed the
likes of Lauren Huon,
Gwen Stefani and Diane
Kruger. This month, his
lens is pointed at our
cover girl, Australian
model Nicole Truno.
HOT SPOT: Takahashi
Sushi, the Electric
Room and Le Baron.
HAVE TO HAVE: A
bicycle, or three.
WORK OF ART: I love
to hang with Thom
Yorke while he is
recording.
TIME TRAVELER:
I often wish for one
more night at The
Beatrice Inn.
TED GUSHUE
In addition to SCENE,
Ted Gushue contrib-
utes to publications
including The New York
Observer and GQ. When
not engaged in writing,
he can be spoed
behind the DJ booth
at some of the most
exclusive nightclubs
and events in NYC.
HOT SPOT: JG
Melon'sBloody
Bull, cottage fries,
bacon cheeseburger.
Best hangover cure I
know of.
HAVE TO HAVE:
Stubbs & Wootton's.
(Suggestively winks
eye, slowly writes
down mailing ad-
dress, I'm a ten and
a half, he mutters
while clearing throat).
WORK OF ART: I'd
love to have a drink
at Boaz Mazor's pad
in the city, Todd
Selby did an incred-
ible photo essay on
itvery cool spot.
TIME TRAVELER:
When she's in town,
my mother insists on
eating at Swifty's to
pay homage to her
favorite restaurant:
Mortimer's. I would
kill to have had a
meal there with my
parents in its heyday.

AN OUTTAKE OF NICOLE
TRUNFIO AT INDOCHINE
JUNE

n SCENEs debut issue, we ex-
posed the society grifter Andy
Albert who was married to Annie
Churchill (who was actually nev-
er married to anyone related to
Winston Churchill. In England,
Churchill is a common namelike
Davis to the U.S. Maybe I should start saying I am related to
both Sammy Davis Jr. and Geena Davis?). Annie filed for di-
vorce from Andy a mere two days after he pleaded guilty to mul-
tiple felonies. Needless to say, Mr. Albert is now in the slammer.
And now another socially over-ambitious couple, Philip and Lisa
Maria Falcone, who flaunt their lavish lifestyle, could go from
living high on the hog to the dog house. Philip Falcones billions,
gambled on an internet scheme, seem to be vanishing. But that
hasnt stopped the outrageously-dressed Lisa Maria from hitting
the party circuit with unstoppable gusto; stepping and repeating
at every media event she can attend. Writer Ted Gushue digs
deep into the weirdly fascinating world of the flamboyant and
controversial Falcones.
If the Falcones manage to stay on the scene, youll most likely
find them wrangling for a center booth (to the right of the room)
at New Yorks favorite fashion and art world club house, Indo-
chine. A downtown classic (like their famous spring rolls), In-
dochines main man, the dashing Jean-Marc Houmard, reveals
his recipe for success and we let you know who the new guard
of Indochine is, joining regulars like Calvin Klein, Julian Sch-
nabel, Carine Roitfeld, et al. On any given night, Indochine is
the place to be (and be seen), and Mark Squires shoots model
Nicole Trunfio in deliciously decadent clothing that is perfect
for a night of table hopping and lychee martinis.
On the subject of boldface botes, the Four Seasons is
gasp!opening a second locale in the Meatpacking District.
The Mies van der Rohe and Philip Johnson-designed Midtown
location is where power lunchers with last names like Kissinger,
Bloomberg and Winfrey go to cut deals that change the world.
And the man who does the seating arrangement of the Grill
room (the beautiful Pool room, although stunning, is also Siberia
before 6 p.m.) is Julian Niccolini. Beth Landman breaks bread
with the charming Niccolini and gets the inside scoop on his new
restaurant and how he keeps track of who's who in Manhattans
meritocracy.
Summer is here and we cant wait to hit the beach. So ease up
on the carbs (hint: Indochines menu is flat-tummy friendly) and
enjoy this months list: Best Hamptons Beach Bodies. Did your
winter workouts at Equinox actually work? Check out our list and
see if your cut bod made the cut. See you at the beach.

elcome to the Fivestory boutique, the Upper
East Sides new must-buy-everything destina-
tion. Interior guru Ryan Korban, Alexan-
der Wang's go-to guy for all things dcor, is
responsible for the super-luxe boutique's de-
sign, which is a cross between Paris Park Hy-
att and Charlotte Yorks Asian babys future pad. The brainchild
of Claire Distenfeld, who's on everyone's Next Big Thing
list, the shop draws a yin-yang crowd: think the Fat Radish
meets Nello. Designer Timo Weiland and It Girl Anna-
belle Dexter-Jones down ginger cocktails with Venezuelan
jewelry designer Monica Sordo and editor Alexis Bryan
Morgan. Style icon Natalie Joos drapes herself prettily
on the spiral staircase (the perfect place for decadent posing),
arranging her long pale pink dress just so. Whos it by? ev-
eryone wonders. Joos, who is behind the heavily bookmarked
blog Tales of Endearment, isnt sure. KCD. I just feel like my
wardrobe is all KCD, she says, referring to the power PR firm
that reps everyone from McQueen to Chlo.
Next up: Acme, where Dom Perignon hosts a Just For Fun
dinner. Organized by the unstoppable Ursula Damani of
Nadine Johnson PR, the supper draws the fun, fun, fun art
crowd. I share a booth with Lily Kwong, writer Johnny
Misheff and fashion world darling, the doll-like Michelle
Violy Harper, the latter of whom expounds on the art of
party picture poses: I work with what I have and I try to high-
light my outfits. Harpers outrageously chic outfits easily give
Daphne Guinness a run for her custom Louboutins.
A flock of fashion big wigs and future stars have mastered
the party pose at the 2012 Parsons benefit. Honoring Donna
Karan, the waterside bash at the Chelsea Piers attracts every-
one: Lorenzo Martone, Bonnie Morrison, Behnaz B

Sarafpour, Bibhu Mohapatra and Peter
Som, to name a few. Shoe designer Alejandro
Ingelmo is there in all his handsome, sexy tattooed
glory. Have you ever seen Ingelmos tats? They cover
his entire stomach, which is probably why he has a
perpetual six-pack. Parsons future fashion stars (a se-
lected few show their lines out of hundreds of hopeful
students) and Karan command the stage after Karan
receives her award. The world is growing small,
says Karan during her speech, so take the opportuni-
ty to go out and see it. With that incentive, the crowd
heads to The Boom Boom Room for the D4D, aka
Downtown for Democracy.
Huddled by the bar are members of the down-
town elite like Sarah Sophie Flicker, Mira-
belle Marden, Valerie Boster, Girls star Lena
Dunham, Ryan McGinley, Aurel Schmidt,
Terry Richardson, Arden Wohl, Kyle de
Woody and the Ruffian designers Brian Wolk
and Claude Morais, who are releasing a limited-
edition line of cosmetics with MAC. One of the lip-
sticks will be dusted in 24K gold, Morais explains.
Lip bling! Paging Michelle Violy Harper.
Up next is GQ and Guccis cocktail party for
James Franco in honor of their new made-to-mea-
sure suiting service. Center stage is the notoriously
sexually is-he-or-isnt-he Franco as well as Sabine
Heller and a zillion Franco-files.
One more store opening: Vogues soire for Maje,
the French brand that's suddenly becoming the It
boutique for Parisian-minded ladies to scoop up en-
tire closets. And where could be better than Bleecker
Street? Hosted by Vanessa Traina, the spot is
crammed wall-to-wall with French accents, perfect
manicures, and a cloud of Quelques Fleurs, which, if
you have to ask, means you never had any premature
foreign exchange students from Biarritz at your high
school. Alas, the scene is notably dude-free. Go to
Paris, Hannah Bronfman orders, spinning tunes
behind the counter in her newest role as in-demand
DJ (according to every party planner and PR flack,
there's always a need for fresh PYTs who know their
way around a turntable). That's where you'll find a
guy. Or maybe we can just a nurse an unrequited on
the mysterious Mr. Franco for another month.

sion have in common?
They are currently
both being immortal-
ized on the Lower
East Side thanks to Bantam, a new
lounge which quietly opened on the
Bowery in the beginning of April.
The Steve Lewis-designed space pays
homage to the other meaning of its name
in sizebantam also means a small fowl
due the venue that once was Stanton Pub-
lics small size.
Its less-than-hefty floor area helps dic-
tate the door policy, according to Seamus
Regan, who owns the club with Scott
Hockens, Amit Zaman and Norman Ree-
dus, an actor who is best known for his
work in AMCs The Walking Dead and
cult-flick Boondock Saints, not to men-
tion being the ex-husband of super-model
Helena Christensen. We just dont want
pretention, Regan specifies.
With a space that is small like this, you
want a hot crowd, and with all these own-
ers, they know most of the people, chimes in Lewis, who has
designed a plethora of popular club and lounge spaces.
With Bantam, however, a space where uptown meets down-
town and steeped with a rock and roll vibe, a typical faade
wasnt going to cut it. It couldnt be too buttoned up because
its the Lower East Side and the idea is that its been here
forever, he says.
The original inspiration came from a room Lewis saw in the
movie Marie Antoinette, that was full of layered blues. From
there, came the glass urns in the window that illuminate, as
well as the bar that does the same, made from a door that is
more than a century old.
The real attraction of the space, though, may be the outside
areaa porch framed by an old, 1940s neon whiskey signan
outdoor space that will be perfect for those nights between
weekends away when the citys weather is scorching.
Although the 75-person outdoor alcove is just now opening
to the public, the venue has already attracted those with a pen-
chant for rock and roll. Julian Schnabel and girlfriend (model
May Anderson), and actors Steve Buscemi, Michael Pitt and
Dean Winters have all ventured to the spot. The space has
also held an event for the Hole Gallery and Andy Rourke from
The Smiths was a featured deejay last month.

t one time, a unique 80s dance club kept lim-
ousines lined up at an unlikely spot: the corner
of 91st Street and York Avenue. Still, the infa-
mous hot spot the Surf Club was, for a brief but
brilliant moment, arguably one of the hottest
clubs in the city.
The Surf Club made waves on Christmas Eve in 1984,
during the heyday of New York nightlife (perhaps a tes-
tament to the flourishing economy and the plethora of
post-collegiates who flooded the city and brought with
them a welcoming navet toward drugs). Though fondly
remembered, today the Surf Clubs legacy may be one of
self-destruction; it was a place where people went to have
funsometimes too muchlosing jobs (and credibility)
along the way.
As most clubs at
the time catered
to the downtown
crowd, many
also made their
mark on specific
d e mo g r a p h i c s
(faux-Victorian at
Nells, gay disco
at The Saint and
the art elite at
Area), the Surf
Club was undeni-
ably a palace for
preps. Adorned
with striped um-
brellas and white
lattice reminiscent of the private beach clubs of South-
ampton or Edgartown, it became a home away from home
to trust fund-toting blue bloods. The club may have court-
ed a yuppie crowd, alumnus of Andover and Amherst who
went on to become investment bankers, but by no means
was it buttoned up.
Adding to its popularity, many grew to love the Surf
Clubs owners, Toby
and Angus Beavers,
brothers who were
heirs to a fortune
traced back to two old
New York families: the
Beekmans and the De-
vereauxs. The Beavers
grew up in a two-story maisonette on 93rd Street off Fifth
Avenue, and in an effort to avoid a $14 cab ride to Studio
54, only to risk being turned away by its legendary door-
man Mark Benecke, Toby Beavers says he opened his
club within walking distance, and quite earnestly admits
it was also for free booze and free women.
Seven long years after the club closed its doors in 1990, in
the wake of the 1987 stock market crash, 200 former regu-
lars attended the Surf Club reunion and Toby Beavers 43rd
birthday party. Still, Toby Beavers did not immediately lose
his penchant to party, and though his days of hosting the
likes of Mick Jagger and Rick James were seemingly over,
he made some on-again, off-again efforts to capture the Surf
Club years with a screenplay called Moonlight Memories or
The Rise and Fall of a Party Animal.
In Manhattan, a place where clubs burn bright but burn
out quickly, the Surf Club lives on in the hearts of many of
its preppy patrons.

o, were not referring to the wildly
entertaining and successful movie
The Hunger Games (can you tell we
are fans?), but rather the more realis-
tic, PG-rated version of the summer:
the Olympic Games! The games are
taking place in London this year and
the city has been gearing up for the
festivities to make sure the thou-
sands of visitors will not be disappointed. In fact, The
Telegraph describes it
as the most ambitious
cultural programme to
take place in our life-
time.
London has much
to celebrate this year:
not only is the London
Festival launching to co-
incide with the Olympics,
but the country is also toast-
ing to Queen Elizabeth IIs
Diamond Jubilee this yearmarking 60 years of her reign over
corgis and fascinators.
Though the Olympics arent set to start until July 27th, there
is plenty going on in the month of June to keep visitors busy
with a bevy of events organized by the London 2012 Festival.
Concerts, carnivals, art shows, performancesit would take
anyone hours to read through the list of happenings. Lucky for
you, weve sorted through the events to give you a selection of
events that are not to be missed this summer.
Kick-off the month of June in royal style with the Diamond
Jubilee central weekend, June 2nd through June 4th, during
which visitors can celebrate the monarchy by watching 1,000
boats strut their sails on the Thames for the Diamond Jubilee
Pageant, attending the BBC Concert at Buckingham Palace, or
partaking in the Big Jubilee Lunch, where the British take to
the streets to share their food and hospitality and get to know
their neighbors.
On June 21st, the official first day of the festival, London-
dwellers ought best to get themselves a bell, or a pair of
ear plugs: to announce the festivals launch, all the bells in
London will ring as loudly and as quickly as possible for
three minutes at 8 a.m. (good thing your jet lag will prob-
ably have you up before then). The idea was conceived
by artist Martin Creed, who hopes bells all across Britain will
chime in.
One of the most anticipated events surrounding the Olym-
pics however is BBC 1s Hackney Weekendthe UKs biggest
free ticketed music event which will take place June 23rd and
24th at the Hackney Marshes in East London. This year, head-
liners will include Florence and the Machine, Jay-Z, Lana Del
Rey, Rihanna and many, many more.
Other noteworthy events include the World Shakespeare
Festival (after all, it wouldnt be a British festival without some
Shakespeare), the Open Gardens Weekend on June 9th and 10th
(the English have always been keen on their gardening) and an
art installation by Ai Weiwei and Herzog
& de Meuron at the Serpentine
Gallery Pavillion.

ory Dobner has been drawing since he developed the
proper motor skills to pick up a pen. Since then, his quill
has etched every notebook, blackboard or vintage car
hes gotten his hands on. A self-taught artist, Dobners
black and white ink drawings are striking in their vivid intricacy.
While traveling, Dobner learned the art of
mobile drawing; give this man a few drinking
straws in an airport and he will whip up a
small sculpture in time to
board his plane. I love the
challenge of making something
out of nothingjust a pile of things
sitting there dead that you make alive,
kind of like a magician, says Dobner.
Today, Dobner has settled into a studio in
Londons Hampstead with his wife and children, where
he needs nothing more than his favorite quill to fulfill his ar-
tistic needs. Hampstead is a bit
like a forgotten land to me.
Its somewhat isolat-
ed and its cot-
tages and
o l d
l a n t e r n s
make it feel like the
countryside. The town also
seems to boast an abundance of ani-
mals which have inspired Dobners draw-
ings of quirky animals over the years. There are even parrots
in Hampstead Heath. People say they are descendants of Jimi
Hendrixs parrots who flew the coop after he died.
Making somethings out of nothing is what led Dobner to ex-
pand the scope of his work to interior design. Names like Chris-
tian Dior, MTV and Agent Provocateur turned to Dobner for
custom projects ranging from wire dress forms to hand-painted
silk wallpaper and murals.
For Dior, Dobner sculpted a giant wire dress form for guests
to walk under as they entered the show. I liked that playful
naughtinesslike children peeking under a brides wedding
dress, says Dobner. Playfulness married with realism appear
as a common theme in most of his drawings. For even if his
characters seem to
belong to the chil-
drens book genre,
they also hold some
very non-childlike
characteristics; but-
terflies and ribbons
interlace with skulls, cheeky fish smoke long cigarettes, octopi
grip their tentacles to revolvers. Though Dobner admits his
own childhood reads serve as inspirations (Paddington Bear and
Alice In Wonderland in particular), he says that reading books to
his children is what gave way to the fantastical side of his work.
There is so much going on in the illustrations in childrens
books, they dont leave much to the imagination, says Dobner,
justifying the pronounced simplicity in the composition of his
ink drawing, usually void of color or context and background.
The straightforwardness of the inks brushstroke is no doubt
what keeps bringing Dobner back to the medium (not
to mention its resemblance to wire, which
is his preferred medium for the
enormous outdoor sculp-
tures he creates). I like
the simplicity of the
ink and the fact that
it leaves just enough
to the imagination, adds
Dobner.
But Dobner seems to almost
have an aversion to color; he confessed
that a yellow and black tape measure on
his desk interrupted his work, taunting him
until he moved it out of the room. I work in a very
controlled environment and am very particular about
my spaceeverything has to be in its place. Dobners clut-
tered yet orderly studio is cramped with dozens of antique frames
which he collects and uses to frame commissioned drawings, and
a collection of various objects and homeware items.
Dobner's work is available at Maison 24 on Park Ave-
nue, where visitors can find drawings, pillows and
journals all signed by Dobner, as well as his
popular alphabet tile series; Kate Moss, Al-
exander Wang and Robbie Williams are
among the fans who have each picked
up their own personalized set.

hanels Little Black Jacket
is having a momentthough
its not like this classic hasnt
been having a moment ever
since Coco drew up the pat-
tern for the look that estab-
lished her as the greatest couturiere of
her time.
But this June, Chanel is celebrating its
iconic mascot with a travelling photo ex-
hibit featuring images from the forthcom-
ing book, The Little Black Jacket: Chanels
classic revisited. Due out this fall, the book
was born out of a collaboration between
none other than Karl Lagerfeld and Vogue
Paris former editor in chief, Carine Roitfeld
who styled various celebrities and personali-
ties wearing the little black jacket while La-
gerfeld stood behind the camera capturing
the reinvention of this wardrobe staple with
black and white film.
It comes to no surprise that, with their
powers combined, Lagerfeld and Roitfeld
recruited some of the biggest names in
fashion, music, film and society to model
for The Little Black Jacket. Some of the
bold-faced names featured in the book in-
clude Alexander Wang, Joan Smalls, Yoko
Ono, Charlotte Casiraghi, Sarah Jessica
Parker, Theophilus London, Elizabeth Ol-
sen, Sofia Coppola and Anna Wintour (who
modeled with her back to the camera, but
wed recognize that signature bob any-
where!).
The exhibit launched in Tokyo this past
April and is set to travel to eight differ-
ent countries, making its appearance in
New York on June 8th through June
18th at 18 Wooster Street. While the
exhibit will include over 100 photo-
graphs, Chanel boutiques throughout the
city will also take part in the homage, pre-
senting a selection of jackets from the Paris-
Bombay Mtiers dart Collection.

ere is a pair of impossibly adorable chairs that simply can-
not live without each other. In fact, to separate them would
be a downright crime!
Incredibly creative London-based design duo, Jimmie Karls-
son and Martin Nihlmar have recently cornered the market on
innovation in furniture design. These bygone bergre chairs
have been given modern injections and fillers that would send
any Park Avenue plastic surgeon into a jealous rage!
The mismatched embellishments of turquoise velvet and
yellow canvas with the delightful hand-painted demi-dasc-
hunds are somehow perfection all together. And if these haute
hot dogs don't make you sit up and beg, you can commission
the artists to paint your very own pooch for posterior posterity.

efore we begin, I want you to pull up iTunes, your ancient CD collection, hell,
if youve got it on vinyl even better...I want you to put on Ben E. Kings rendi-

There is a rose in Spanish Harlem...
Lets talk about the American Dream. Lets talk about a Cinderella story.
Lets talk about paying dwarves to wear uniforms with your daughters ini-
tials picked out in green rhinestones. Lets talk about Lisa Maria Falcone.
Years ago, if youd known to take the trip up to 122nd Street and Lexing-
ton Avenue, theres a chance you might have bumped into a wild-eyed Lisa
Maria Velasquez knocking about on her way home from school. She would
have been hard to misstall, athletic build, jaguar black hair, ice blue eyes, a
beauty yearning to break free from the shackles of her youth.
It isnt hard to picture the scene on the desk of a Disney cartoonist: an over-
protective alcoholic aunt on welfare, forced to serve as surrogate mother to a
child she didnt want; subsequently imposing a myopic view of the world by
restricting her adopted daughter to a 25-block radius around their apartment.
Lisa Maria would later recall her culturally starved childhood, explaining that
her aunt wouldnt even so much as sign the necessary permission slips for
me to go on class trips to museums.
The Puerto Rican phoenix would see her father once a week, spending visiting hours playing dominoes at the bar where he bussed
tables to pay for her Catholic education. Ive never seen anyone clear tables like him. He never complained about it, Lisa Maria said
Lisa Maria Falcone came from little and found a lot. She
married self-made billionaire Philip Falcone and the two
lived a lavish life and weren't afraid to flaunt it. Ted Gushue
dives into the Falcones' worlda decadent existence where
nothing is too over-the-top. Recently, Philip Falcone's com-
pany filed for bankruptcy and Lisa Ma-
ria may soon realize that when you have
a lot, you have even more to lose.

to The New York Times three years ago, in a profile rumored
to be prompted by her husbands 20% stake in the companya
very publicly failed buyout attempt.
Keeping in line with her storybook start, Lisa Maria would find
her first break in the form of a Wilhelmina talent scout, who, upon
spotting her on the street, signed her to the agency in her late
teens. Her modeling career would provide the foundation needed
to attend Pace University, where she would eventually wrangle an
associate degree in Art History, somewhat of a delayed fuck you
to a mother who had routinely quashed her stabs at urbanity.
Using her beauty to fill in the gaps on her cultural rsum,
Lisa Maria slowly and earnestly progressed through the social
landscape of early '90s New York, finding herself at a group din-
ner at a posh Park Avenue restaurant surrounded by a cadre of
Wall Streeters and their molls. It was at this dinner that shed
meet an ex-junk bond salesman from Chisholm, Minnesota
by the name of Philip Falcone. Hed just performed his first
leveraged buyout, taking control of an ailing New Jersey-based
hairbrush manufacturer, and shed just met her future husband.
As their courtship blossomed, Philips prickly investment
dissolved. It would be six years before creditors would stop
calling, a tough period of time that left Lisa Maria, the girl
with legs as long as Manhattan with fond memories of nights
spent on an air mattress, embraced in a shared struggle, sealing
the bond that would lead to their marriage.
THE FAN CLUB
It is commonly observed that a sudden wealth, like a prize drawn
in a lottery or a large bequest to a poor family, does not permanent-
ly enrich. They have served no apprenticeship to wealth, and with
the rapid wealth come rapid claims which they do not know how to
deny, and the treasure is quickly dissipated. Ralph Waldo Emerson
A
contemporary of Philip Falcones once attempted to
sum up the former Harvard hockey player up with
a gambling analogy: [Philips] a roll-the-dice, put-
everything-on-red kind of guy. In 2006, Falcone
hatched a strategy that diametrically opposed the thinking on
the street. Falcone would bet big against the subprime mort-
gage sector.
Years prior, in a conversation with an old college buddy, Fal-
cones all-or-nothing attitude would take shape: If I dont make
it, he began, I can go back to Chisholm and pump gas. With
that mind set firmly entrenched, he leveraged himself to the hilt,
amassing $15 billion, and he placed it all on red, and won.
By 2009, as the financial world was knee-deep in a Fukushi-
ma-sized meltdown, Harbinger Capital had amassed over $25
billion in management, with Falcone raking in several billion
in management salary. Philip and Lisa were suddenly, and im-
measurably wealthy.
On a damp Tuesday afternoon I find myself taking the sub-
way to the Four Seasons Grill room to meet with a few mem-
bers of a secret society: The Lisa Maria Falcone Fan Club.
As I sit down on a chair that I swear Ive seen in the permanent
collection at MoMA, a pair of sharply dressed, socially active
hyper-achievers greet me with giddy excitement. While they
wouldnt agree to release their names, they are more than hap-
py to dish on Lisa Maria.
SCENE: So whats the attraction? Why are you people
so fascinated by LMF?
Member 1: Any one of her attributes wouldnt make
for a very interesting story in and of itself, but in Lisa weve
got it all: rags to riches, insane fashion sense, hilariously
bad boob job, endless social blunders, a complete absence
of tact, and a husband whose hedge fund is imploding.
Pulling up a picture of Lisa Maria on an iPhone, my at-
tention is directed by one of the members to the incon-
gruity of her sweater puppies: Look at them! That plas-
tic surgeon should be shot, theyre like a pair of googley
eyes!
Peeling my eyes from the screen, I direct my first ques-
tion at the second member:
Member 2: Its public theater, you really cant pay for
this kind of entertainment. My fascination has become
almost pornographic, I kind of cant help but stare and
watch the train wreck in slow motion.
SCENE: Okay, so this all had to start somewhere,
right? Tell me about the first time you saw her.
Member 1: A decade or so ago I used to run around to
all those sample sales like most girls in their twenties do,
scrounging for deals. I remember her being at the third
day of a Barneys sale, fighting over a Chanel belt or some-
thing. She was very scrappytotally had that Lisa from
the block fight in her.
Member 2: I remember it was some sort of cocktail
function, a friend of mine rushes over to me and points at
her, Oh my God look. Shes here! Its Lisa Falcone. You
have to come see what shes wearing. And of course it was
some gaudy, over-the-top outfit. From that point forward,
I was hooked. I have to say though, the audacity is seduc-
tive, in a gauche sort of way.
Falcone has often been the first to admit her bizarre cult of
personality is quick to offend, routinely belting out her mantra
to anyone wholl listen: I am great at one thing, and one thing
"I AM GREAT AT ONE THING, AND ONE THING ONLY.
I HATE TO SAY IT, BUT THAT'S BEING MYSELF...
AND THAT'S WHAT PEOPLE
DON'T LIKE ABOUT ME."

only. I hate to say it, but thats being myself, she says. And
thats what people dont like about me.
For many, the first time they would hear the name Lisa
Maria Falcone would be at the 2009 Friends of the High Line
benefit, attended by a decidedly un-motley crew: Oscar de la
Renta, Ralph Lauren, Susan Sarandon, Jerry Seinfeld, Anna
Wintour and Harvey Weinstein, just to name a few.
Wrap dress luminary Diane von Furstenberg and her hus-
band, media mogul Barry Diller, had set the evenings tone by
pledging a $10 million challenge grant, intended to kick start
the $50 million goal set by High Line founder Joshua David.
Never one to be outdone, a nimble Lisa Maria Falcone danced
her way past patron tables, juking event staff and security
guards on her diamond studded 40-yard dash for the stage.
A heavily perfumed gasp silenced the crowd as Lisa cat-
walked to Joshuas side, pulling his ear to her lips: Gimme the
fucking mic, and buckle your seat belt, we can almost hear
her say, causing the intimidated MC to relinquish his post mid-
sentence. She saddles up, licks her lips, and addresses the A-list
gathering.
Lisas editorialized internal monologue added in brackets:
[What up plebeians?] Id like to introduce myself; my
name is Lisa Maria Falcone, wife of Philip Falcone [and Im
rich, bitch!]. My husband and I have been so moved by the
generosity of Ms. von Furstenberg and Mr. Diller that weve
decided to match the $10 million ourselves. Thank you.
[BOOM! Shows over people, Im out!]
At that very moment, Friends of the High Line was trans-
formed from a tastefully opulent dinner in the honor of urban
renewal, to a freestyle rap battle of the rich and famous.
Back to her fans at the Four Seasons:
Member 1: I mean look, its fine and great if you
want to be a philanthropist and be charitable and save the
world, but theres a way to do things, and then theres a
way to do things. Stealing the stage at a charitable event
and whipping out your checkbook just isnt done.
Member 2: I agree, but we have to be honest with
ourselvesthis type of behavior is exactly what weve
come to expect from her, which makes the theater all
the more amusing. Did you hear the story about her
daughters third birthday?

n 2008, while blue bloods and new bloods were
paring back on conspicuous consumption, the
Falcones purchased 14-16 East 67th Street,
the former residence of porn magnate Bob
Guccione, immediately embarking on a $10
million renovation that sailed through the
Landmark Commissions notoriously diffi-
cult approval process. The intent was to gut
the double-wide townhouse of its 1980s
Caligula vibe, but before ground would be
broken, there was a party to be thrown.
Turning three years old is a relatively
uneventful affair for most toddlers; sci-

age having been wiped clear, I decided to poll my mother, who
herself barely remembers my third birthday, but is pretty sure
it was spent in a pumpkin patch with fellow inmates from my
preschool, all of whom were simply elated to be around such
fantastically large orange objects.
Carolina and Liliana, now 7, would not spend their third
birthdays popping around a pumpkin patch in petite Pa-
tagonia pullovers. Instead, the girls along with a corps of
lucky classmates would be handed round trip tickets to
the Emerald City to pay homage to The Wizard of Oz.
Temporarily receiving a full makeover, the Guccione
mansion would be painted floor to ceiling by muralists intent
on recreating the psychedelic realm portrayed in the 1930s
silver screen classic. A not to be named Brearley mother was on
the scene: [The party] was unbelievablemunchkins were
wearing matching jumpsuits, each monogrammed with the
girls initials in green rhinestones, serving food and drinks
along with all the characters from the movie Yeah. That
happened.
Much to the chagrin of the vertically challenged cocktail
waiter community, it appears that Lisas days of munchkin
parties are coming to a close. Brearley mom reports have
indicated that recent birthday celebrations have taken on
a tempered flair: Last years party was scaled down
they rented out a couple of double decker tour buses and
drove the girls around the city.
While I weep at the image of Brearley girls being schlepped
around on a steerage class tour bus, it seems the public trans-
portation party is emblematic of the sea change put into motion
by the very public explosion of Harbinger Capitals scandal-
ously publicized bet, LightSquared.
Zerohedge.com, whose eerily appropriate tag line, On a
long enough timeline, the survival rate for everyone drops to
zero, had this to say about LightSquareds bankruptcy fil-
ing on May the 14th:

The aforementioned knowledge in hand, it was not
surprising to learn that Lisas friendly high-end Madison

patterns: She used to be in here like once a week buying
out the store, it was wild, our unnamed contact illustrated,
but I havent seen her in months. It seems like the party

JULIAN NICCOLINI
IS READY TO TAKE ON THE
DOWNTOWN CROWD
The Four Seasons defines power lunching (think Kissinger, Bloomberg and
Winfrey). And after 17 years of seating Manhattan's meritocracy (whose tables
in the Grill room are a social thermometer of whose influence is up or down
that day), Julian Niccolini refuses to slow down. Beth Landman talks to the
frisky, funny Tuscan implant about his plans to open a branch in the ever-
trendy Meatpacking District calledwhat else?the Four Seasons Down-
town. Niccolini dishes about former President Bill Clinton, his dream customer
and how he feels about critics of his new venture.

restaurant on East 52nd
Street, and you feel like
youve stepped back in
time. Soaring ceilings, chain metal curtains, a tapestry by Picas-
so and that dramatic pool havent evolved since the Mad Men
era, when the space, designed by Philip Johnson and Mies van
der Rohe, first awed diners.
There is one significant change, however. In place of the pre-
vious low-key owners, a puckish Julian Niccolini and his part-
ner Alex von Bidder have overseen the grand restaurant since
they purchased it with Edgar Bronfman in 1995. Tuscan born
Niccolini has the gift of gab and breathes life into the elegant
room as he works it masterfully, from table to table, speaking
with irreverence and routinely playing pranks on his regulars.
Now, after 17 years of honing his skill charming the Midtown
power set, he has his eye on the downtown crowd and has been
in talks to open a Meatpacking offshoot of the legendary res-
taurant.
A particular real estate man has one building already up and
another being built on 10th Avenue between 14th and 16th
streets; he really wants us, he reveals. There are a lot of peo-
ple extremely interested in our opening a place downtown.
As soon as word got out, Niccolini was inundated with inqui-
ries. Understandably, architects were among the callers. Who
wouldnt want to be seen as the new Philip Johnson?
Believe it or not, I just heard last week from David Rock-
well, Niccolini confides. He is a tremendous architect for res-
taurants and he said he would be interested in designing the
new place. We need to have somebody famous.
One man who is not excited about the expansion is Marc
Sherry, owner of the Old Homestead, which has been in the
area for more than 100 years. He told the Daily News, If they
come down here with an elitist attitude or thinking theyre go-
ing to reinvent the wheel, theyve got another thing coming.
Niccolini laughs off the challenge with a touch of condescen-
sion. The Old Homestead is fine with me. I thought it was
cute when I was there about 10 years ago.
In any case, he says he has no plans for an elitist establish-
ment. Up until now, many people opened restaurants for the
one percent; we need to do something for the other 99. You
have to make sure you are giving quality at the right price.
The new place is going to be a very democratic restaurant: I
think artists and architects will like itthe name itself. It will
be dedicated to the emerging class from downtown; there are a
tremendous number of people and companies moving there. It
is going to be American food, but more casual, and we will call it
the Four Seasons Downtown. If we called it Niccolini, nobody
would come.
He has been spending some time scouting the area. Pastis is
a goldmine; I also go to Soho House and I like Catch. The food
is outstanding and theres a lot of action.
According to Niccolini, the new spot will be a 100-seat room,
serving lunch and dinner. The dcor, he says, will reflect the
mothership, but have downtown sensibility.
That sensibility will be a transition for Niccolini, who knows
how to finesse luxurious details and understands the art of
high-end service. Even on a rainy summer night, he is dressed
in a suitwith flair.
I only like Thom Browne; everything is Thom Browne,
even my tie and shoes, he announces as he shows off his
jacket with Brownes signature tags hanging off the back col-
"ONLY A FEW PEOPLE HAVE THEIR OWN TABLES, LIKE MR.
BRONFMAN AND PETE PETERSON.
WE MOVE GUESTS AROUND
TO MAKE THE ROOM LOOK GOOD.
SOMETIMES IT DEPENDS ON WHO IS DOING BETTER AND
WHO IS DOING WORSE."

lar. Look, it is short and very tight. The suspenders
are not Thom Browne, but I wear them because my
pants are falling down. I wear a tie because I work
here; otherwise I wouldnt wear one. His watch is
more of a classic piecea striking gold vintage Rolex
from 1962, a time when the restaurant was in its in-
fancy. My wife got it for me; I guess she decided to
keep me around, he smiles.
Though he sits down to dinner, he carefully moni-
tors the other tables, sending gifts here and there, and
finally taking a moment to bite into his food. My
quail are delicious! he exclaims. They look like
Dick Cheney shot them. What happened to my glass
of Sancerre? Did the waiter quit or go on vacation?
His eyes scan the diners with admiration, as if he is
appreciating art in his own home, and settle on a bru-
nette in a tight black dress. She is hot! Later he
checks out a blonde. Look at this one, she is cute!
Then he calls a waiter over and asks him to gift the
tables to our right and left with truffle strewn risotto.
Its a fun night! he proclaims. Look, we have
two beautiful people who just got engaged over here,
and over there we have Jamie Dimon and his wife.
A lot of people are going over to give him support
and say do the best you can. Stuff like that happens,
what are you going to do? He heads over to greet the
beleaguered banker, then whispers to a waiter and a
bottle of red wine appears at the table of the newly
engaged couple: the woman illuminates when it ar-
rives.
Its from Paso Robles; thats where Im from!
she exclaims. He has done his homework. Yes, its
very dry there and produces great wine, he notes.
But as he glances at the bottle, his eyes catch a
few droplets of condensation: he quickly grabs his
cell phone and calls the front to have the wine cel-
lars temperature elevated. Look at the foie gras on
that bison, he says, nodding toward a neighboring
diner, and the tableside carvingswe are not Mc-
Donaldsyet.
The new place will have no such formal service,
but it will have the famed Dover sole, he promises,
along with extended hours.
Uptown, you see what happens. Its 9:30 p.m. and
everyone is going to sleep. Downtown we will stay
open until 1 a.m., of course!
Niccolini is fond of saying of course, as if ev-
erything hes learned and perfected should be easy and obvi-
ous. He is confident and mischievous enough to toy with the
biggest business players, leading CEOs past the Grill rooms
VIP section lunchtime, and up the stairs to Siberia just to make
them sweat a little, before circling back to a more coveted table.
He has become an expert at juggling the Grill rooms seat-
ing chart, which changes daily and accommodates regulars like
Ralph Lauren, Martha Stewart and Henry Kissinger. There
are 33 tables and they are taken every day, he explains. Only
a few people have their own tables, like Mr. Bronfman and Pete
Peterson. We move guests around to make the room look good.
Sometimes it depends on who is doing better and who is doing
worse. If someone is having a bad day, I will give him a better
table. People are very concerned about where they are seated.
They get upset and ask do you know who I am? But it is to-
tally impossible to satisfy all these clients. If I know someone
is having an important lunch I am tempted to seat the person
somewhere that is not so prized and sometimes I do. Then I

CLINTON SITS DOWN,
HE HAS TO WORK
THE WHOLE ROOM."

think, why did I do that? But just for a moment.
With all the outsized egos, there is the occasional seating
misstep. There are sometimes I make a mistake and I say
sorry it didnt work out today, lunch is on me.
Niccolini likes to satisfy a customers every whim, but also
enjoys jabbing regulars in the process. If a customer like Pete
Peterson wants wonton soup, I will get it from the local Chinese
place, put it in a nice bowl and charge $45; I also get a hot dog
at the truck for $5 and charge $45, he laughs.
He gets a thrill from playing host to boldfaces like Bono
(that guy from U2), Drew Barrymore and Bill Clinton, who
could apparently fill Niccolinis shoes were they ever vacated.
Before Clinton sits down, he has to work the whole room, he
says. Who would he like to see as a client? Beyonc would be
great, and Johnny Depp! He was here for a movie premiere and
that guy has seven bodyguardsmore than a president.
The Four Seasons was the first restaurant in New York to
focus on seasonal menus, and Niccolini remains true to the love
of quality ingredients by bottling Julian of the Seasons olive
oil, tomato sauce and honeyall come with a caricature of the
restaurateur on the label. It was a terrible year for honey, he
sighs. People think it is easy to make; they are idiots.
After 10 p.m., he is ready to head back to the small apartment
he keeps blocks from the restaurant. I am going to walk my
new dog, Dutch. Can I show you a picture? Look at that nose!
She is only five months old and she is wearing a Thom Browne
jacket!
Despite the side projects, the dramatic room and all the
heavy hitters, 58-year-old Niccolini is yearning for another act.
He and his wife are planning to give up their home in West-
chester and move to the city full timesomewhere downtown,
of course.
A lot of restaurants in Midtown have music because other-
wise there would be total boredom, he says. We dont have
any except for cocktails, because the diners in this area are more
serious. But downtown, it is a different clientele. There will be
music and it will be for people who want to stay a little longer.
The look has to be very similar to what we have here, but if we
had a pool I would have some naked women in it!
And, Beyonc and Johnny Depp might even show.
"IF I DON'T MAKE IT, I CAN
GO BACK TO CHISHOLM
AND PUMP GAS."

IMPACT OF RECENT
MAJOR SALES
In the last few weeks, I have been asked
several times: How have the recent, ma-
jor record breaking residential sales af-
fected the market? Naturally, those sales
have had an important, direct effect on the
value of comparable properties. Beyond that,
I also believe those sales have had an
important impact on the entire market with
respect to confidence.
While any residential real estate
market follows the general trend of the
economy, the fundamentals of our market
inventory, supply and demand, and very
importantly, equityare solid. Buyers
are very price sensitive. They under-
standably seek justification for the price
they are asked to pay. It is a matter of
confidence. Residential real estate is
primarily shelter, our homes. Our good
fortune is that because of where we
live, our homes continue to be a stable
financial asset as well.

ODE TO
SAG HARBOR
W
ith the launch of the Hamptons season under our belts, we
trust that New Yorkers have packed the necessary items for
the numerous weekend jaunts out to the beach that everyone
is so fond of. But urban-dwellers would do well to pick up
Bond No. 9s new fragrance, appropriately named Sag Har-
bor, before they zip up their weekend bags and make a run
for the Jitney.
The fifth in a series of New York marine-themed perfumes
(Bond No. 9 has previously launched
scents dedicated to Fire Island, Coney
Island and Andy Warhols Montauk), the
Sag Harbor scent is an homage to every-
ones favorite whaling town turned sum-
mer destination. With an aroma comprised
of citrusy bergamot and evergreen ivy leaf,
Sag Harbor marries itself perfectly to the
beach-y atmosphere of the Hamptons; and
even includes base notes of amber and san-
dalwood as a nod to the towns rich history as a
former trading-post.
A quintessentially New York company, Bond No.
9 opened its first store on Bond Street in Noho and
has since then been producing fragrances in tribute
to the great city we always love to celebrateour very
own New York City. In fact, the company states that
its dual mission is to, on one hand, restore artistry to
perfume, and on the other to mark every New York City
neighborhood with its own scent. But as Manhattanites
have acquainted themselves with the brand, Bond No. 9
has gotten to know its audience to discover that New
Yorkers love their beach getaway as much as their city.
Since the launch of their Fire Island fragrance in 2005,
Bond No. 9 has expanded its mission to provide New
Yorkers with scents to match their favorite summer
destinations on Long Island. Sag Harbor in particu-
lar seems to be a favorite source of inspiration
for the expert perfumers who chose the quaint
town as the lieu for their only boutique outside
Manhattan. The store is located in the his-
toric American Hotel on Sag Harbors Main
Street. Available since this past Memorial
Day, the Sag Harbor fragrance comes in
one of the brands stunning bottles which,
in keeping with the marine theme, has a
navy blue pattern repeat of Bond No. 9s
token logo.
Bond No. 9 releases a new marine-
scented fragrance in an homage to
the South Fork town

It's unlike any vehicle on the road.

JUNE
T
he cold steel cuffs were cranked tightly around thin wrists.
What would juvenile jail be like? Could you eat Sour Patch
Kids in the slammer? Play video games? Make prank calls?
The idea of prison was overwhelming.
Please unlock these things, begged my BF of the semester
Topper Livingston. They hurt.
I had subdued Top with handcuffs that I had purchased,
along with a BB gun and a complete toy cop accessory pack
(fake shield and hat and billy clubmy favorite) in the unused
maids room of my parents apartment.
Youre my prisoner. Busted dude. Youll be un-cuffed when
you post bail." Bail was set at a mere $200, a bargain for his
crime: stealing four stink bombs from my backpack.
I dont like guns, Lourdes, our devoted house-
keeper, announced in her thick Spanish
accent, as she walked by again and saw
the BB gun trained on Toppers right
temple, guns arent nice.
I finally removed Tops handcuffs,
setting him free for the discounted bond
of $75 and a $75 IOU to be paid in cash
or candy over the remaining term.
But maybe I was the one who should be in handcuffsreal
handcuffsand behind real bars? The cop action pack was just
one of the many birthday presents I charged to my parents
house account at Lexington Avenues famous fun palace Min-
nie Alberts Toys. My scheme? Every other day I would waltz
into Minnie Alberts Toys and charge a birthday present, which
Mrs. Albert, who was about 101 years old, would slowly wrap up
in the shops signature paper decorated with colorful balloons.
There sure are a lot of birthdays this month, Mrs. Albert
gargled out in her dinosaur voice. Yeah, March is a big birth-
day month at Barclay, I quickly responded with a huge fake
toothy smile. And April is even biggerI think in my class
alone there are 15 birthdays. Mrs. Albert finished wrapping the
enormous toy warship, dropped it into a bag decorated with bal-
loons and handed me a receipt that I signed Mr. Campbell
and made for the exit.
Was I a thief? Whenever I asked my parents for necessities
like a new BB gun or a water slide for the long hallway outside
Lourdes room, they always responded with the two words I
loathed the most: Well see. So I had no choice but to charge
up a storm to their account at Minnie Alberts Toys. How could
I face every morning at Barclay without a BB pistol in my blue
blazer?
A week later, after I had stuffed some jacked-up toy cars in
my bag before I got to my room, I heard my mother screech
Charles Campbell, get in my room this instant. Heart beat-
ing, I went and stood as my mother sat on her four-poster bed
holding a slip of paper. I just got the bill from Minnie Al-
berts Toys, she started, her pretty green eyes turning
to angry slits. $1, 200? Who do you think you are?
That is not your charge account. There were a
lot of birthday parties last month, I began to
plead in my most innocent voice. Stop
there, Charlie. Dont you dare lie to
me. I have called Mrs. Albert and the
next time you charge there, she is call-
ing the police, you will be arrested
and end up at Grace Farm. (Grace
Farm was a boarding school in Maine for
"troubled youth.") I skulked out of her room
feeling dizzy with fear of the dreaded Grace Farm.
A week later, I couldnt take it anymore. I walked to Min-
nie Alberts Toys and found the laser gun that was being ad-
vertised 24/7 on TV. I headed to the counter, toy in hand, and
approached Mrs. Albert. Then suddenly from outside, I heard
the most horrific sound. The loud wail of a police siren.
