This research of thermal efficiency improvement of coconut palm sugar stove is to study the
performance of heat and heat loss of coconut palm sugar stove both before and after the efficiency
improvement. Thermal efficiency is refer to thermal energy use to raise the coconut palm sugar and sugar
temperature and to evaporate water from the coconut palm sugar compare to total energy given to coconut
palm sugar stove which are wood fuel and electricity. The heat loss comprise of 6 parts which are heat loss
along exhaust gas, heat loss from incomplete combustion, heat loss from combustion of hydrogen in fuel,
heat loss because of humidity in fuel, heat loss by convection and radiation at surface of coconut palm sugar
stove and heat loss that are unaccounted. Furthermore, this research also can be use as a guide to those who
are interested to improve any old coconut palm sugar stove or build a new one. In addition, to those who are
interested, the information obtained in this research can be use as a guide to improve in thermal efficiency of
other kind of stoves which are in the same field of industry. The coconut palm sugar stove studied was fivepans type at Sukkasem 28 Moo 2, Tha Kha, Amphawa, Samut Songkhram.
The data obtained by recording every parameter involved from the time the process started till the
end of the process each day. Determining Thermal efficiency and Heat loss of coconut palm sugar stove both
before and after efficiency improvement which divided into two step of improvement, the first step is to
optimized the fresh air flow rate in the stove by adjust the amount of air supplied by blower at the front of the
stove, the second step is to optimize the amount of flue gas recirculation. The result show that, before the
improvement, amount of air flow inside the stove is 0.354 kg/s and the efficiency is 21.1851.0355%, heat
loss by exhaust gas is 34.5351.5051%, heat loss by incomplete combustion is 18.2486.9369%, heat
loss by combustion of hydrogen in fuel is 3.4030.0507%, heat loss because of humidity in fuel is
0.4290.0064%, heat loss from convection and radiation at surface is 6.6580.8138% and unaccounted
heat loss is 15.5435.6469%. After the first step of improvement, amount of air flow inside the
stove is set to 0.285 kg/s and the efficiency is 28.6530.7763%, heat loss by exhaust gas is
27.3961.4402%, heat loss by incomplete combustion is 13.7256.1965%, heat loss by combustion of
hydrogen in fuel is 2.8550.0207%, heat loss because of humidity in fuel is 0.3600.0026%, heat loss

from convection and radiation at surface is 9.96511.4178% and unaccounted heat loss is
17.9657.0593%. After the second step of improvement, amount of air flow inside the stove is
set to be as same as obtained in the first step of improvement and the flow rate of recirculated flue gas which
resulted in greatest efficiency is 0.0178 kg/s (6.24 % of air flow rate) and the efficiency is 35.5871.0997%,
heat loss by exhaust gas is 26.2841.3897%, heat loss by incomplete combustion is 3.3592.9180%,
heat loss by combustion of hydrogen in fuel is 2.6960.0094%, heat loss because of humidity in fuel is
0.3400.0012%, heat loss from convection and radiation at surface is 12.1152.2981% and
unaccounted heat loss is 19.6193.8658%.
