Abstract
The catalog lists all food ration cards issued in Sweden during the years 1917 1919 by the state
Folkhushallningskommissionen (People Household Commissions).
1.
Introduction
During World War I food was rationed in Sweden in a similar manner as in the rest of Europe.
While the rationing of milk, meat, butter and potatos operated by means of ration card issued by local
municipal authorities, the rationing of bread, grain, sugar and coffee was organised by the People
Household Commission (Folkhushallningskommissionen).
Rationing of bread was decided by the Swedish Government on 19th December 1916 and
continued till 13th August 1919. The first bread cards were valid from 15th January 1917. All bread
cards were valid for a period of 2 or more weeks. For the sake of conveniency the weeks have been
numbered from week 1 starting on 15th January 1917 to week 136 which ended on 24th August 1919.
Bread cards were printed till the end of July 1917 in Uppsala by Almqvist & Wiksells Boktryckeri
A.-B. and after that in Stockholm by Stockholms Kartong- och Lithografiska A.-B., Jacob Bagges
sner.
Some bread and other cards were overprinted with the number of the card district as follows:
1. Stockholm

Ration cards for grain, sugar and coffee had irregular validity periods.
Most Swedish World War I ration cards, with the exception of cards for special groups of
consumers, are quite easy to find as there still exist large remainders which were never destroyed.
Collectors of Swedish nationwide ration cards are lucky to have a complete systematic catalog of
these cards edited by Karl Hildebrand as Appendix 28 to his De Svensk Statsmakterna och
Krigstidens Folkhushallning 1919-1920 published in Stockholm in 1920. His catalog contains not
only a list of all food ration cards but also a lot of usefull information which allows to identify the
cards. Some rare ration cards which are hardly to be find in private collections would be forgotten
without his catalog.
Taking into account that some cards were overprinted with the number of the card district Karl
Hildebrandt obtained the following number of total cards issued during 1917-1919
Bread cards
Grain and pea cards
Sugar cards
Coffee cards
Potato cards

The present catalog is based mostly of Hildebrands list with some of his rare gaps filled with the help
of authors collection. Some few illustrations of rare ration cards are taken from Minnesskrifter fran
ransoneringstiden aren 1914 - 1919 published by F. Nyvander and J.E. Wikholm in Sundsvall in
1919.
