Our Trip to Greece

Mum always spoke highly of Greece. We thought its her country anyway. It did not
mean much to us that we were Greek. We avoided Greek school as much as we could.
We saw her jumping up and down when we were notified that both of us, my brother
and I, were selected to go on an educational trip to Malessina.
We left together with another 26 children all from Australia on the 29th of July. There
were 4 guides to take us to Athens as well as 4 mothers who decided to accompany
the group. Unfortunately we had turbulence all the way over from Singapore,
therefore all of us were sick when we arrived in Athens, but we were able to recover
quickly.
It was a very easygoing and relaxed atmosphere and a well organised trip. A bus was
waiting for us to take us to Malessina. My Mums family was following the bus. They
decided to stay at a hotel next to the camp to keep an eye on us.
We had received instuctions on how to pack our bags and what to put in, something
very helpful, to learn to be independent. We met the leaders at the airport in Sydney
and the rest of the children. We said our goodbyes to Dad, a rather quick one. Yiayia,
Nona and uncle Nick were waiting at the Greek airport. They gave us each a great big
balloon. Mum and other mothers helped with luggage to be put on the bus.
Two hours later we arrived at the camp. We slept almost all the way. When I saw the
camp I knew I was going to like it. We went into our cabins with bunk-beds. We had
a choice. Then I decided to check the place out. I bought phone cards and rang Dad. I
missed him so much yet I loved the camp.
Each day we had breakfast and waited for the inspection of our rooms. It was like
home really. Sunday was an exception for we went to church. Every day they brought
special buses to take us to the beach. We went to two excursions, one to Delphi and

another to Athens sightseeing. The antiquities were amazing. I took beautiful photos
of the Acropolis.
We made my Dad very jealous for he has never seen Greece. They also took us to the
movies next to Malessina. The camp had its own chef who would cook for us
everyday.
We had many leaders who were supervising us all the time in such a fantastic, safe
way, my own mother could not even approach us.
There were 180 children there from all over the world. Towards the end of the trip we
had the final celebration, where we performed what we learned: dances, singing,
theatre. The Minister for Foreign Affairs who was present said that next year they will
try to mix kids from Greece with Greek kids from other countries. That would be
fantastic.
This is a country that I appreciate a lot. Free education and entertainment.
Congratulations Greece, You always set an example for other countries to follow.
I have asked Mum to put my name down for next year. I might be lucky again.
It was nice to see people from all over the world be in peace and harmony or should I
say Greece and Harmony?
I think Greece is the BEST PLACE ON EARTH.

The teachers professional development program at the University of Crete in
Rethymnon was held in July of this year. The 28 participants who took part in the
program were academics, secondary, primary and pre-school teachers of the Modern
Greek language from countries as diverse as the United States, Canada, North and
South Africa, Sweden, Great Britain, Russia, Georgia and of course, Australia. Our 7
Australian colleagues were from a variety of systems such as Greek Orthodox
Colleges from Perth, Melbourne, Adelaide and Sydney, primary and secondary State
and afternoon schools, Universities and Department of Education Consultants.
The course consisted of lectures by the various authors of the materials that have been
developed over the past eight years at the university as well as very informative
lectures by Professor Damanaki, and other academics from the Universities of
Rethymnon, Athens and Thessaloniki about the background and organisation of the
EDIAMME and the .
he course covered topics such as Methodology of teaching Greek as a foreign and
second language, the resources available for teaching History and Greek Culture to a
variety of levels and in different contexts and finally, evaluation and presentations by
the course participants of the various resources and texts including CD Roms and
Audio CDs. Each participant presented a 15 minute mini lesson on one of the texts
produced by EDIAMME and discussed the relevance and appropriateness of that text
for their own classes and students in their respective contexts.
Participating in the course also were 25 or Greek Language
Consultants from Greek Consulates around the world who discussed the specific
issues they encounter in their individual countries and participated in an exchange of
ideas/resources forum with all the participants.
A highlight of the course was the 3 day Drama Symposium, entitled ,
, which featured performances of theatrical groups from
Greek schools around the world. Some of the participants included student theatrical
groups from Georgia, Uzbekistan, Chicago, USA, South Africa, Germany, France and

Melbourne, Australia. The first prize for the most outstanding performance went to
the very polished Greek speaking thespians from Saheti School in South Africa. All
teachers also attended the 2 day drama symposium which featured a number of key
note speakers including talks from Australian based presenters: Professor Kanarakis,
Nikos Skiadopoulos and Theodoros Patrikareas who spoke about the huge impact of
Greek theatre on the lives of Greeks in Australia over the last 50 years.
A most valuable feature of the 4 week conference was the exchange of ideas,
resources, strategies and texts for use in Greek language teaching either as a second
language or as mother tongue maintenance. Some of the most valuable resources
which were distributed during the 4 week course were websites which would be of
use to teachers of Greek language abroad. Some of these websites are listed below :
greeceinprint.com.
www.xanthi.ilsp.gr/filog/
www.pi.gr
akounatheis.gr
A reminder that the resources produced by the University of Crete are available free
of charge to all teachers of Modern Greek in NSW.
They can be viewed on the website at www.ediamme.edc.uoc.gr/diaspora or at the
Greek Consulate Education Office. The Languages Unit at Ryde State office also has
the resources.
I would also strongly urge all teachers of Modern Greek to apply to attend one of the
professional development courses in Rethymnon through the
program. There are a number of courses in January as well as in early 2007. A list of
these courses is also available on the EDIAMME website.
