e : 1:30 hours Date maximum Answer ALL questions PART A (5X2 = 10 marks) 1. What are the assumptions made in theory of simple bending? 2. Define section modulus? 3. Write the different type of beams and loads? 4. Define Young Modulus? 5. Define Hookes law? PART B (4x10=40 marks) 6. A beam 8 m long rest on two supports one at the right end and the other two meter from the left end. The beam carries a UDL of 15 kN/m over its entire length and a point load of 80 KN at a point of 1.5 m from the right end. Calculate the SF and BM and also draw the SF and BM diagrams. (10) 7. A beam is simply supported and carries a uniformly distributed load of 40 kN/m run over the whole span. The section of the beam is rectangular having depth as 500 mm. If the maximum stress in the material of the beam is 120 N/mm2 and moment of inertia of the section is 7X108mm4. find the span of the beam. (10) 8. A 150 mm X 400 mm I girder has 200 mm thick flanges and 30 mm thick web. Calculate the maximum intensity of shear stress when the shear force at the cross section is 1.6 MN. Also sketch the shear stress distribution across the depth of beam. (10) 9. A freely supported beam of 4 m effective span carries a load of 10 kN/m over the right hand half of the span and a point load of 22 KN at a distance of 1 m from the left support. Construct the SF and BM (10) 10. An axial pull of 35 KN is acting on a bar consisting of three lengths as shown in fig. If the youngs modulus = 2.1 X 105 N/mm2, determine (i) Stresses in each section (4) (ii) Total extension of the bar (6) : 08.02.2012 : 50 marks
