Brushes Self-portrait Paintings

Grade Level: 6 Subject: Art Prepared by: Christina CranstonOverview and Purpose: This lesson is aimed at providing students with an opportunity to develop their digital art making skills. On iPads, students will use the application Brushes to create a self-portrait digital painting. Brushes is a painting application which will allows the user to choose different brushes, blending, transparencies, and layers to create an original artwork. Educational Standards

The student will be able to correctly apply knowledge of the application and operate the 4 main features. The student will understand the role of digital media in modern art and art making. The student will create a self-portrait which incorporates the proper use of blending, layering, tints, and shadow. The student will create an original piece of artwork which demonstrate an understanding of artistic technique.Materials Needed: iPad Installed Brushes Application Paper & Pencil Starboard

galleries and a slide show of student examples.

2. The class will discuss this emerging new medium of digital art and its application in
our world.

3. The teacher will use the StarBoard to demonstrate the features and uses of the iPad
application Brushes

4. The teacher will allow students to work in pairs to explore the brushes application and
complete simple tasks.

5. The teacher will demonstrate techniques and proper art-making process for creating a
self-portrait

6. The students will be given several in-class opportunities to work independently on


creating a digital self portrait.

7. The teacher will provide resources and one on one help to student throughout project 8. The teacher will demonstrate the Brushes and Dropbox sever for students to share
and upload their project. Verification: Steps to check for student understanding

1. The student will actively participate in class discussion on digital art. 2. The student work with a partner to successfully complete 4 tasks which demonstrate
understanding of the application.

3. The students will create an original piece of digital art which demonstrate proper art
and media techniques.

4. The teacher will check student progress at various points during the project to ensure
student understanding and provide feedback Activity: The students will create a digital self-portrait using the Brushes application on an iPad. The students will demonstrate their understanding of the application to create a digital art work which employs the techniques of blending, color selection, tint & shadow, along with drawing. With completion of this activity, the students will use a rubric to evaluate their project based on categorized criteria. Notes The Brushes application is not a free app, however there are a number of resources available such a grants which would provide subscriptions for students to use.
