2 Introduction
This manual contains the description of all errors that the SBS/TRAU system can generate. An example of one error printout from Local Terminal is shown in Figure 1. This output manual is just a listing of all possible system messages. Output manuals can not substitute or replace maintenance manuals and are only intended for the support of experienced personnel when performing specialized fault clearance tasks.

Every fault occurrence from Local Terminal is related, at least, to one page of error description in this manual.
This manual is organized according to the PROBABLE CAUSE. Failure Events are grouped by Probable Cause. For every Probable Cause, different failure events are reported according to the Specific Problem field. In Annex A, for every TRAU Specific Problem, the associated Probable Cause is provided.

So, by taking into account these two elements the operator can determine the page of the error manual where the Failure Event being analyzed is described.

The following classes can report Failure Events: PCM_CIRCUIT EQUIPMENT LAPD_LINK TRANSCODER TSLA ENVATRAUE <Object>: PCMA PCMS TPWR BSMS TRAC LAPD TRAU TSLA ENVA 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 0 1 2 3 Presently not used 4 Presently not used 5
<Object Instance>: Object number (e.g. BSMS copy 0 or 1). Note that this is an internal organization for Failure Events grouping and the operator does not need further information to accomplish the analysis. Probable Cause It is an abbreviated sentence that describes the probable cause of the error.

Specific Problem
This parameter identifies further refinements to the Probable Cause of the alarm according to the ITU-T Rec. X.733. In the Annex A, all the Specific Problems used by TRAU are provided with the Probable Cause of reference.
Event Type This parameter defines the alarm categories. Five basic categories of alarm are specified according to CCITT X.733. There are: COMMUNICATION FAILURE QUALITY OF SERVICE FAILURE PROCESSING FAILURE EQUIPMENT FAILURE ENVIRONMENTAL FAILURE Event Time This parameter identifies the time of detection or resolution of the fault and it is included in any Alarm Reporting notification. Severity According to CCITT X.733 the following severities can be reported When an error occurs: INDETERMINATE (not used in our system) CRITICAL MAJOR MINOR WARNING When an error ceases: CLEARED
In case of error ceased, please note that the message part that follows the Notification Identifier field is not printed by the Local Terminal.
Trend Indication The following Trend Indication values can be reported: LESS SEVERE NO CHANGE MORE SEVERE
12
A30808-X3247-M440-1-7619
Outputs OML:TRAU
The LESS SEVERE trend indication is printed if the associated severity for the concerned object, is less severe of those associated to previously reported Failure Events relevant to the same object and still active (i.e. no related error ceased message was generated). The NO CHANGE trend indication is printed if the associated severity for the concerned object, is the same as the highest of those associated to previously reported Failure Events relevant to the same object and still active (i.e. no related error ceased message was generated). The MORE SEVERE trend indication is printed if the associated severity for the concerned object, is more severe of those associated to previously reported Failure Events relevant to the same object and still active (i.e. no related error ceased message was generated). When the trend indication is Not Applicable (i.e. when the alarm is the first concerning an object) it is not reported by LMT and OMC. Notification Identifier According to the ITU-T X.733 specification the Notification Identifiers is unique across all notifications of a particular managed object throughout the time that correlation is significant. Correlated Notification According to the ITU-T X.733 specification this parameter, when present, contains a set of Notification identifiers and their associated managed object instance names. This set is defined to be the set of all notifications to which this notification is considered to be correlated. Thus, this parameter, included in the FER, identifies the notifications to which this notification is considered to be correlated. The Correlated Notifications parameter is present in the Failure Event Report only when it is retransmitted during the Alarm Alignment. Proposed Repair Actions According to the ITU-T X.733 specification, the Proposed Repair Actions parameter suggests a solution to the operator to repair the problem reported in the notification. In Annex B, all the Proposed Repair Actions used in the TRAU FER are provided. Additional Text According to CCITT X.733 this part, when present, allows a free form text description to be reported. At present the Additional Text will contain the associated string if any in the environmental alarm.
Originator It is an integer number that identifies the software module and the Task originating the Failure Event. In Annex C all the TRAU Originator are provided.
Additional Words 0102 2930 are hex values that are helpful for a detailed description of the error. This part is particularly useful to the software designer for analyzing the error cause and taking proper actions to solve the problem.
A30808-X3247-M440-1-7619 13
Outputs OML:TRAU
For each originator, under the Legend part of the Failure Event description, a concise description of the error and the meaning of the Additional Words are provided.
VERY IMPORTANT NOTE: Anyway, if the problem persists, i.e. the system or operator actions are unsuccessful, or occur periodically, the failure events must be collected and reported to the manufacturing company for analysis.

NoAction (Standard value). RepairActionRequired (Standard value - not used). Replace the addressed card. Test the addressed card(s) and perform the proper action according to the Test Result. Possibly, check also its (their) insertion in the frame. Alarm with warning severity. Refer to the manual for the proposed action. Environmental alarm. The repair action is defined by the operating company. Wait for the end of the Automatic Diagnostic and then perform the proper action according to the Test Result. Check on both sides the parameters of the line connecting the BSC and the faced Network Entity. Then, if it is all right, replace the line interface cards with the correct FW/HW edition. Check on both sides the parameters of the line connecting the BSC and the faced Network Entity. Then, check the line interface card state including the FW/HW editions. If it is all right, test the line interface cards. Finally, check the PCM cables and the HW of the faced Network Element. Check the PCM cable connected to the LICD and, possibly, tune the related BER. Check the signal emitted by the faced Network Element. Then, check the devices on the path between the BSC and the Network Element (CrossConnect, ..). Correct the configuration attribute value(s) for the addressed card(s) or replace the Hardware with one compatible with the configuration. Insert the addressed card in the frame. Then, test it. If the addressed card is the StandBy one, test it. Check the related cables, connections and line quality. Lock the related equipment. Provide information on the state of the BSC card versions (LICD, PLLH, SN) and speech quality to the customer service. Wait for the PLLH warm up (about 15 minutes). Check on both sides the LAPD parameters (TEI, LAPD timeslot) and correct them, if necessary. Format the Flash EPROM of the concerned BSCI card. If there are no more SYNC (SYNE) Managed Objects available to be automatically chosen as a new synchronization source, create a new one. Check the insertion of the LICD in the frame, then test it. If the Test Report is good, replace the UBEX. Replace the LICD and, if after re-entering in service, the problem is already present, call the customer assistance (problem of PLLH, active SN, Rack or Flat cable connecting base and extended modules). If the BSC is synchronized to the MSC, it is a problem of bad external source. If the BSC is free running, it is a problem of bad PLLH signal. Then, tune the PLLH. Test the related MPCC and perform the proper action according to the Test Result. Check the TRAU Network Entity. Check the BTS HW. Check the barring information and the BTS HW. Check the TRX HW.
