Visitors Guide

Los Alamos National Laboratory General Information

Welcome! We hope this guide will make your visit more enjoyable. Visit http://www.lanl.gov/welcome/ for detailed visitor and host information. TAXIS Government transportation service (667-TAXI or 667-8294)* is available for official Laboratory visitors from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and on a limited basis from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. All travel must be approved by the host group. RENTAL CARS / BUS SERVICE Rental cars are available in Los Alamos, Santa Fe, and Albuquerque. Shuttle bus service (Shuttlejack, 982-4311, and Greyhound, 471-0008) is available from the Albuquerque airport to Santa Fe. A nonprofit community transportation system (LA Bus System) serves the Laboratory, White Rock, and the Los Alamos townsite during rush hours. On-demand service is also available from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. weekdays by calling 660-3426. For more information, call Los Alamos Bus System (662-2080). PARKING Some parking is restricted. Please observe these restrictions; violators are fined. ACCOMMODATIONS Accommodations include the Hilltop House (662-2441 or 1-800-462-0936), the Holiday Inn Express (6611110 or 1-800-465-4329), Los Alamos Inn (662-7211 or 1-800-279-9279), and Bandelier Inn (672-3838 or 1-800-321-3923). For bed and breakfast availability, contact the Los Alamos County Chamber of Commerce (662-8105). CAFETERIA The Laboratorys main cafeteria, on the top floor of the Otowi Building (TA-3, SM-261), is open to employees and visitors for breakfast from 6:30 a.m to 10:00 a.m. and lunch from 11:00 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. The Sweet Shop is open 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. There is also hot food service at TA-16, TA-53, and TA-55 (7:00 a.m. to 2:15 p.m.). CLIMATE At an elevation of 7,300 feet, Los Alamos enjoys a semiarid and mountain climate. At this altitude the air is thinner and the sunshine stronger than at sea level. Visitors who are not used to these conditions should take proper precautions. For instance, avoid prolonged exposure to the sun, and be careful about overexertion and dehydration. Also, one alcoholic drink at this altitude has the effect of two at sea level. The area receives about 18 inches of precipitation yearly. Summer temperatures range from the eighties during the day to the fifties at night; those in winter range from the fifties to the teens.
