Beach State Park shelter
(formerly the airbase) has
been secured and will provide
just the right atmosphere for
everyone, young and old, to
come out and have fun. Yes,
there will be games, music,
fellowship and of course - lots
of food!
Saturday morning, our
traditional Memorial
Breakfast. will be take place
at the Holiday Inn –
Waccamaw. This is always a
special time as we reflect and
remember our roots. We ask
that you send us the names of
our family members who have
moved from labor to reward
since the Reunion in 2007.
There will be free time after
the breakfast to explore

this committee are looking
to fuse some family fashion
and entertainment

morning at the worship
service. A church has not
been designated yet, so if
you live in the area of
Myrtle Beach and would

Tameika Hollis was awarded
the 2008 National Women of
Color Technology All-Star Award
in Dallas, TX.
And in January 2009, the Hollis’ -
Michael and Tameika - will be
welcoming a new baby boy and
brother for Mikalya to the family
tree.
SPC Maurice Gilliard returned
safely to the US on November 8,
2008 after serving 15 months in
Iraq. While in Iraq, Maurice was
promoted to Specialist (E4), was
named Soldier of the Month and
was Soldier of the Quarter runner-
up. He has been awarded the Air
What Does ALS Have to do with BCMS?
I
had never really heard of ALS
and probably like most of us
until you come in contact with
someone who is diagnosed or it
hits close to home, we really are
clueless about it. In doing a little
research this is what I’ve found
out…
Often referred to as Lou Gehrig’s
Disease, amyotrophic lateral
sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive,
fatal neuromuscular disease that
slowly robs the body of its ability
to walk, speak, swallow and
breathe. Although the cause of
ALS is not completely understood,
the recent years have brought a
wealth of new scientific
understanding regarding the
Assault wings/ Army Achievement
Medal (AAM) and the Army
Commendation Medal (ARCOM).
KUDOS to Maurice for his many
achievements, and of course, we
thank God for protecting him. His
proud parents are Dwayne and
Monika Gilliard of Vine Grove,
KY.
Janee’ Seabrook Graduated
with honors from Martin Luther
King Jr., High School in May 2008
with honors. She is currently
attending Auburn University in
Auburn, AL. Janee' received one
out of only two International
Baccalaureate Diplomas awarded

While there is not a cure or
treatment today that halts or
reverses ALS, there is one FDA
approved drug, riluzole, which
modestly slows the progression of
ALS as well as several other drugs
in clinical trials that hold promise.
Importantly, there are significant
devices and therapies that can
manage the symptoms of ALS that
help people maintain as much
independence as possible and
prolong survival. It is important to
remember that ALS is a quite
variable disease; no two people
will have the same journey or
experiences. For more on this

So what does ALS have to do with BCMS and
why am I including such a heavy subject in the
family newsletter? It’s because one of our BCMS
family members – Marc Seabrook – has ALS.
Marc was medically retired from the US Army
in June of 2007 after serving his country for 17
years. He served 10 years in the United States
Marine Corp ("Once a Marine, Always a Marine")
and 7 years in the US Army. Marc was
diagnosed with ALS also known as Lou
Gehrig's Disease, in August of 2006, while
serving in Iraq. Marc and his family reside in the
Atlanta, GA area, where he is currently
receiving medical care.
Marc is one of the bravest men I know.
