But it's a severe handicap to have only weekends for chess,.worrying about entry fees and hotel bllis,.and compete ingwith an opponent who has no such concerns. Here, for example, is Emory's game against Dmitry Gurevich of Chicago in the Dlinois Class Championships,. November 22,. 1992. Chess in Indiana
I'd like to start my first article as scholastic editor with thanks to John Crane for allowing me to write this article on Indiana's scholastic chess program/tour. Indiana's scholastic chess is among the best in the country and I am happy to represent the program with this column. A key point of having a scholastic column is that in regular columns only the elites of kids get their good games published. Although scholastic games are usually of I ower quality or considered cheap by fellow chess playing adults, they also have a different kick than regular games; this comes from the lack of chess knowledge and the large difference between the strength of players, (due to the Swiss system). In an averaqe (scholastic) tourney the good games :~bome the end, the surprising at upset miniatures of the first round are always a fear of above average players! In the following game I fend off a lower rated player's hope for an upset. Wow that was a quick one! Lack of opening knowledge prevented my opponent of even reaching an middlegame. The other kind of interesting scholastic game is in the last rounds when the highest ranked players are matched. These games are most important due to the many undefeateds going into the last round. The following is a game between myself and another strong, underrated scholastic player, Adam Briner. In this game I employ the deadly MilnerBarry Gambit.

of Indiana's strongest, most active players (both having formerly won or shared the State Championship)
Jim Mills and Josh Bousum both had their eye on the coveted Humphrey
Bogart Memorial trophy (okay, and maybe some cash, too). In this year's tourney, they clashed in the fourth round. This time it Mills who emerged victorious, cashing in the advantage of the bishop pair for the win of an exchange and then corraling white's remaining forces with some nifty endgame play.
