During this hot dry summer which could turn out to be the warmest on record your Chamber has been keeping cool with new members and another successful event. Although the hot weather and rain seemed to affect the Eyes to the Skies festival, we had more volunteers this year. That converts to higher revenues for our scholarship program. Thanks to all who attended and gave their hours to the Chamber. Many more businesses joined the Chamber in July and we are grateful for the increased numbers. It will give you more people with whom to network and they will benefit by you patronizing their businesses. When you meet some of the new member representative I know you will give them a warm welcome. One of the major events we produce each year is our annual golf outing. We are pleased to report that the number of participants was up, sponsorships were up and overall revenues from the raffle, events on the course, and silent auction were up over last year. We are probably a bit ahead of what is happening in the economy in general. Kudos go to Bruce Povalish of Rapid Funding and chair of the golf outing committee. He had regular meetings and kept everyone on task. We had many raffle prizes and silent auction items thanks in a large part to Carolyn Wheeler of Care-A-Lot Pet Sitting Plus. Paula Gleason of Bensidoun USA coordinated the volunteers for the day. John Morris of TripCaddie set up a separate website for the event which was also a big help. The staff at Seven Bridges Golf Club did a great job especially chef Kevin Peterson who prepared a delicious steak dinner. None of this would have occurred without the assistance of Jill Eidukas, Office and Events Manager who organized the foursomes, program and Amy Vidovic, Office Assistant. Thanks to all of you for a tremendous effort. Thanks to BrightStars Jim Guzdziol and Maureen Wood for a very enjoyable Business After Hours. There certainly were a lot of raffle prizes and they were much appreciated along with the food and beverages. We also enjoyed a ribbon-cutting at NUF Frozen Yogurt in Woodridge. This is a new concept which I predict will continue to be very popular. The business is located on Main Street in the Seven Bridges business district. As we move along to August we look forward to many more activities and we are also announcing two additional events for the fall. First is a renewal of our 9 hole Fall Classic Golf Outing which this year will be held at Springbrook Golf Club in Naperville. If you would like to sponsor a hole and you missed our major outing you can do so for only $150. The event will begin with a box lunch followed by 9 holes of golf and awards ceremony afterward. It will be one of the last outings of the year. Secondly we are holding another 5K on Sunday November 18 th at 9am. We plan to give away turkeys, chickens, and pumpkin pies to the age place winners. We will be giving the participants hooded sweatshirts which are guaranteed to the first 300 to register. It will be one of the last races of the season and a tune-up for the turkey trots which occur on Thanksgiving in many local communities. Finally, we look forward to seeing you on August 16th at the Member Appreciation Picnic. It will be a free lunch and raffle prizes will be given away as well. What better way to enjoy the summer? See you there.

Chairmans MessageChris Ashe

July was jammed with great events in our community. Though it has cooled since the start of the month, if you made it to the Eyes to the Skies festival you had to brave 100 degree heat and probably lost a few pounds by the time you got back home. If you did make it out though, you were treated to yet another tremendous time. The Chamber was well represented this year. Members of our organization volunteer every year to help staff the event in various fashions. In addition to lending a helping hand, this effort allows us as a Chamber to direct proceeds from Eyes to the Skies to benefit the numerous scholarships we award local students on an annual
basis. Keep that in mind next year if you would like to help out. The better represented we are, the greater opportunity we have to directly effect the deserving students in our community. Our signature summer event, the Annual Golf Outing went off in spectacular fashion. A tremendous amount of work, time, and careful planning goes into putting on an event of this grandeur and we are so lucky to have a cast of dedicated and generous Chamber members who give so much to this event. Thanks to everyone involved from the volunteers, to the 7Bridges golf course staff, all of our sponsors, gift and silent auction donors, the individual golfers, the golf committee, and chamber staff. Id like to pay special thanks to Bruce Povalish for his continuing leadership and effort in making this event better every year. Under Bruces watch, we have seen this event grow every year in participation and maintain a level of excellence that has come to be expected by all those who come to the event. Thanks to all for your participation. Events like these are so important for our Chamber and for our membership to gather, network, and market their business. We look forward to repeating the experience in 2013! In August we have our annual member appreciation event at the Chamber office. The event takes place on August 16th and we hope to see all of you there. Our membership is the reason the Chamber exists and there is no greater opportunity for us to show our appreciation for all that you do than by throwing a little party for you. We strive to keep you connected as a business community, so keep your eyes open for the several opportunities to get involved in the events we sponsor throughout the month of August.

Legislative/Government Affairs UpdateKeith Tice

Illinois Legislative Update Special General Assembly Session August 17. Governor Pat Quinn is calling a special session of the General Assembly to deal with pension reform. According to the Governor its purpose is to consider any legislation, new or pending, which addresses pension reform. Illinois has five pension systems with aggregate unfunded liabilities of over $83 billion, which is the worst unfunded pension system of the fifty states. With pension payments of over $7 billion per year, which is over 23% of the expected state general revenue funds, this has become a very important issue for the states financial stability. Quinn did not specify in his special session proclamation exactly what pension components should be considered. Proposals discussed so far generally require workers to choose between a retirement plan that continues annual 3 percent compounded cost of living adjustments in their pensions or a plan that reduces those COLAs, but contains other benefits. House Speaker Michael Madigan has already scheduled the House to be in regular session August 17 to consider expelling Rep. Derrick Smith, D-Chicago, who is facing federal charges that he accepted a bribe. Madigan spokesman Steve Brown said the House also is considering whether to take up a pension reform bill that would affect only the State Employees Retirement System and the General Assembly Retirement System. That measure, House Bill 1447, narrowly passed the Senate in the closing hours of the spring session. Quinn spokeswoman Brooke Anderson said the governor wants the legislature to take up comprehensive pension reform, meaning the Teachers Retirement System and the State University Retirement System also should be included in legislative action. The General Assembly also should act to gradually shift some teacher pension expense to local school districts, she said in a statement. House Bill 1447. The pension bill that passed the Illinois Senate requires members of the State Employees Retirement System and General Assembly Retirement System to choose between two options. Members can continue receiving a pension cost-of-living adjustment of 3 percent, compounded annually. If they do, however, they have to give up access to state retiree health insurance, and future salary increases will not count toward their pensions. The alternative is a pension COLA that is one-half the urban Consumer Price Index or 3 percent, whichever is less. That COLA would not be compounded. Under this option, however, future salary increases would count toward pension benefits, and workers would still have access to state health insurance at retirement. Since all members of the General Assembly face re-election this year, this might be a good time to pressure legislators to take action over the next two weeks leading up to the special session. This column will keep you informed on further details as they unfold. For any further information that we have available, please e-mail Keith Tice at Envirmark@aol.com Breakfast with Rep. Biggert and Hearing Update on Internet Sales Tax Collection It has become an annual tradition of the Naperville Legislative Committee to welcome Rep. Biggert for an interactive congressional update each August. This year, the event will be held as a stand-alone breakfast from 7:30 - 9 a.m., with the program beginning at 8 a.m., at White Eagle Country Club. The cost to attend is $15 and preregistration is appreciated, but walk-ins are always welcome.
