WEEK 1 / DAY 1 6th August 2012

The School-based Experience is a compulsory component in our post graduate teaching programme for primary education. I had completed my School-based Experience at Sekolah Kebangsaan Sri Bukit Batu, Muar Johor. I choose this school because it is situated in rural area and I want to experience and learn about pupils in rural area. This school is under the SKM ( Sekolah Kurang Murid ) because it only has 231 pupils from pre-school, year 1 to year 6. However, the school infrastructures are in a good condition and complete. This school also has an Access Centre which is not all school get the opportunity to gained this kind of facility. On my first day, I did not have the chance to meet with a headmaster because she is on leave. But, I met with GK HEM, GK Curriculum and GK Co-Curriculum in the office. Three of them had informed early about my present to the school. They are very kind-hearted, supportive, motivated and full of humor. We have a short discussion about current issues in education. After a few minutes, Encik Norsalihin bin Ismail ( GK Curriculum ) had introduced me to two English teacher which is Mrs. Jamingah binti Baros and Mr. Ishan bin Md. Nor. Both of them are responsible for teaching English as a second language. According to the teacher, pupils in the school are not very good in their English. They can talk but just a simple word. Many of them are from the nearest village and usually using their mother tongue to communicate at home. Mrs. Jamingah said that, they had to do many activities to stimulate the pupils to communicate and participate more in the classroom. A few discussions completed with a result that I can observe both of the English teacher. At 8.50 am, Mr. Ishan asks me to join him and enter his class at 4 Arif. I took that opportunity to observe him to know and learnt how the teaching of listening and speaking activities is carried out. At first, I am impressed with him because he waited for two pupils to come back to class before he starts his lesson. At the beginning of the

lesson, he asks the monitor to recite the dua. This is good for motivated the pupils to start their lesson. But, I think his class management is not okay. He just starts with set induction without asking the pupils about the class cleanness because, my observation, the class is not in a good condition. So, it showed that a conducive teaching and learning process will not achieve. During his lesson, I can see that, he just used questioning techniques from the beginning. He asks pupils to make a sentences based on the pictures given, and wrote down the answer at blackboard. In one hour lesson, he used the questioning techniques for the whole lesson. But, pupils participation is very well. They try so hard to give an answer to the teacher. They also can construct the sentences based on the picture given. At the end of his lesson, the teacher did not give the remedial and enrichment activities but, he just asks the pupils to construct two sentences by themselves. After that, the pupils need to pass up their exercises books. I think, we need to do some enrichment activities, so that we would knew either the learning objectives can be achieved.
