PRESIDENTS LETTER FOR AUGUST Why is there always a BUT?

My favorite radio station is KFNO, at 90.3 on your FM dial. It is Christian Family Radio out of Oakland. I love the music, which runs from gospel, to symphony supported by wonderful choruses. I have always thought that if every driver listened to KFNO there would be no more road rage because the music is so soothing. The station offers much more than music. It features two science-based segments regarding the fallacy of the theory evolution. One is titled Beyond Intelligent Design and the other is Creation Moments. Both are very intellectual with reasons and examples why the theory of evolution falls apart in contrast to the teachings of the Bible. Once you listen to these two segments, you will be hooked. If you want to learn about health issues, KFNO offers that. A doctor covers a number of issues relating to your health, covering common diseases and how to best cope with them. If you are having problems with your marriage, finances, diet, raising children, or simply catching up on the daily news, you can get it all here at 90.3. At noon, there is reading from various childrens novels about some famous person who is known for both an impact on humanity and a great Christian. Not to be left out, Bible reading is also present at intervals throughout the day .

Now here is the BUT. BUT the stations president and general manager is Harold Camping. Remember him? Harold is not a theologian by education, but rather an engineer who has seriously studied the Bible. Oh, yes; he is also the guy who, last year, predicted the end of the earth. Millions of dollars were raised in support of Mister Campings prediction, and to spread Christianity ASAP to save the millions of the unwashed masses. There was even a spin-off of companies belonging to non- believers who would take care of the pets belonging to the Christians who would be swept to Heaven during the rapture. Of course nothing happened, except for Mister Camping having a sever stroke. Oh yes, and millions of Americans are still laughing at his false prediction and pointing condemning fingers at we gullible Christians. BUT Mister Camping is back on the air. It would be so easy for me to never want to again listen to his sonorous arguments defending his interpretation of the Bible. BUT he has publically apologized for his false human nature of attempting to interpret the Bible. He is very sincere for the sin of his own human fallibility. He was wrong, BUT he has prostrated himself to world and said forgive me! This was a really big deal for him! And I have accepted his apology and still listen to his wonderful radio station. Would it not be great if we could share some of Mister Campings ability to apologize when we are wrong and deeply hurt our fellow Christians? Can we do the same? One of the most difficult things that I personally must do is to apologize to my wife and children when I have done them a great wrong. BUT, I often still defend my actions, even when I know I am wrong. I have also done my best to apologize to you when my words have hurt. I pray daily the Lord to make me a better person, but when I fall short of the mark, to make me man up and apologize in front of both God and the offended. Oh yes, and for all of us to be able to accept an apology. Please, God, help all of us to learn to apologize, and more importantly, to be able to accept one. It is a really big deal for all of us! SLC Church Choir

Sierra Lutheran Church Choir resumes Choir practice on August 21st at 7 pm in the Sanctuary. Our accompanist, Fatima Martin, has been working on our music throughout the summer. We will sing some old favorite songs and some new ones. Rehearsal will last one hour only but may run slightly longer as we get close to Christmas. Unlike a Nationwide TV show, we have no auditions or panel of judges. We sing to serve our Lord, Jesus Christ. Our music selections are based on the Scripture for Sunday or a Scripture related to that topic. Those of us in the Church Choir consider this a Life Group and share prayers, concerns and fellowship. Come join us on August 21st and 7 pm! Fran Garwick, SLC Choir Director

Administrators Notes
Summer is in full swing and we have some events happening here at SLC. 1) LIFT is holding their summer program here on our campus for several weeks in July and August. 2) VBS is going well and kids and staff are having a ball! July 23-26th. Thanks to Cathy Jolley for her leadership in this great program and to all the teachers, youth and staff helping to bring the Word to lots of children in our community! 3) The Worship Committee is working diligently towards making our summer/single services wonderful. Great job folks!!!! Thank you to Shelley Telles, Kay Austin, Tami Wright and Fran Garwick- keep up the good work! *RALLY SUNDAY will be on September 9th. Sunday School will be starting back up for the school year. We hope to have at least two different Adult classes (each class may be about 6-8 weeks long) for you to choose from and of course a full slate of classes for the young children and our Jr. and Sr. High School Youth. If you have an idea for an Adult Class that you would like to learn about or if you have one you would like to teach one please contact me with your suggestions before Rally Sunday. *We will also have a Confirmation Class (the second year portion of a two year program) for some of our Youth that are interested in becoming Confirmed at the completion of the course. *In the Lutheran church, most youngsters go through this course of study for two years(at around the Jr. High School age) so they can stand before the congregation and God and acknowledge that they are taking on the responsibility of their own Christian life. As baptized infants their parents are charged with that responsibility and upon completing a Confirmation Course they take on that responsibility as a young adult. God bless- Becki La Voy-Jordan

Clothes Closet is now closed.

The Sunday School room is being cleared out and will used for a Confirmation class classroom in the fall. Thanks to Samantha Flanagan DuPree for being in charge of the Clothes Closet since its inception. Thank you to Michelle Stevens, Joyce Reed, Elida Baker & Sallie Karp for maintaining the closet. Doug and Elida Baker for clearing it out and seeing that all the clothes get down to the Salvation Army.

KITCHEN CORNER
The kitchen team enjoyed catering the Pickerings 60th wedding anniversary party. We barbecued tri-tip, turkey rolls. We also made two salads and beans. Their daughter Judy did a great job putting the party together. We will be having a brunch after service on July 29. I will report on that event in the next newsletter. Shelley Telles and I are working in the kitchen for VBS. I will report on that event in the next newsletter. Would you always keep in mind that the kitchen needs things like what it takes to bake a cake, biscuits and etc. Mixers, utensils, rolling pens, stainless steel bowls, measuring spoons and cups and good can openers. One of our oblong croc pots cracked, we need to replace it. If you should hear about an estate sale, please let us know. A neighbor gave me 5 rather large zucchini to share with the food bank. I brought them and put them on this table that was empty and I had to giggle because we feed close to 140 families each distribution and I knew this wasn't going to go too far. Then here comes Becky Morales armed with vegetables from her garden and then Carrie Lieder pulled up with baskets of bread and more veggies from her garden. Now it's looking good but then a woman from the community I don't know came with more vegetables bagged and ready to go. So I get it God! Those 5 rather large zucchini got lost in the wonder of His provisions. Thank you Jesus! Sallie Karp Our next meeting is Thursday August 2 at 7:00 P.M. in the kitchen. MAY YOU ALWAYS HAVE LOVE TO SHARE, HEALTH TO SPARE AND FRIENDS THAT CARE. Blessings to you. Shirley Markus

Monday Night Youth Kitchen:

Well, I wish it were not so just yet, but the truth is, school will be starting very soon. That means we will be needing plenty of help from our congregation for Monday night dinners. The exact date is, as yet, undetermined, but could be as early as August 19th (yikes!). We are still awaiting word from the school district regarding the calendar, so I will let you know as soon as I do! In the meantime, please be thinking about helping us out with a meal for our 7th through 12th grade youth! In His Service, Tami

Health Matters: Osteoporosis and You

Osteoporosis is a condition that causes a body to lose more bone than it makes. WebMD.com calls it brittle bone disease which is true and should make all of us think seriously about our risk factors. Women are more susceptible to it but it can affect men, too. Often, the first symptoms are a fracture or develop low back pain. Fifty percent of women over the age of 50 will have a fracture or broken bone because of brittle bones and 25% of men will have the same problems. Risk Factors: Age and family history are a significant risk factor but you cant do anything about that. I remember asking my elderly grandmother how tall she was. She told me she was 5 foot 7 inches tall. Looking at her that day, her head came up to my shoulder and I was 5 foot 7 inches tall. She had shrunk! She had osteoporosis but was never diagnosed with it. Some families dont know their genetic history but remember how short their grandparents or parent were. People who are petite or very thin, even underweight, are at risk for osteoporosis. Carrying extra weight is never a good thing but being underweight is another risk. Dietary factor influence your bone health. Adults under age 50 need 400-800 IU (international units) of Vitamin D and 1,000 mg of calcium every day. People over 50 years old should get 800-1000 IU of Vitamin D and 1,200 mg calcium every day. Include fruits and vegetables in your diet to supply vitamin K, potassium and magnesium. Too much protein in your diet can interfere with bone health. Be sure to substitute a fruit or vegetable for an extra portion of protein. Alcohol and tobacco cause bone loss. If you smoke, STOP! Alcohol can make you dizzy and increase your chance of falling which can cause fractures. Be careful and avoid drinking in excess. Finally, do weight-bearing exercises of some type every day. Astronauts noticed a high rate of osteopenia (beginning bone loss) when they were in space for a long time. Thats because they were weightless, floating around in their space capsule and had no weight on their bones. What to do? First of all, determine if you (male or female) are at risk of osteoporosis by taking the FRAX quiz. This is an assessment tool that will help you determine your level of risk. Go to www.sheffield.ac.uk/FRAX to use the tool. Print it out and take it to your healthcare provider. There are tests that you should have done if you think you are at risk for osteoporosis. These must be ordered by your care provider. If you are over 65 or younger and suspect bone loss, you should have a bone mineral density (BMD) test done. This measures the density of your bones using a special Xray or CT. Have urine and blood tests done which can rule out other serious medical conditions such as hyperparathyroidism, hyperthyroidism Cushings syndrome. Men should have a testosterone level done. Most of all, be persistent with your health care. If you have lab or BMD abnormalities you should pursue them and consider a second opinion. Please call if you have any questions.
