What the heck is going on at the Shutter Island Asylum? Am I crazy or is the government trying to cover up something? Does God really love violence and if so, did he buy a ticket to see this movie? One Word Movie Review: SLOW
Shutter Island is a dark and dreary journey into the mind of the criminally insane. It bravely treads the line between reality and

fantasy, leading audiences to places they don't traditionally go. If that is your taste in mysteries, then Shutter Island is your kind of movie. For the rest of the audience, I can only echo the man in the row in front of me who exclaimed at the end, "Retarded! That movie Search This Document is no middle ground sucked!" There here. Search

For the more conventional viewer, and this is the mainstream

audience these days, the "retarded" comment is probably more to the point. If you want a tidy mystery with a few scares along the way, this isn't for you. However, with Martin Scorsese directing, Leonardo DiCaprio in the lead, a host of quality actors filling out the cast and Dennis Lehane's novel as the source material, there are ample reasons to see this movie. Just don't consider it an easy walk into the damp prison of the mind. The Story
Shutter Island starts with all you need to know to prepare yourself for the whole film. It is 1954, the cold war front and center for the paranoid veterans still reeling from the pain of the Second World War. We see fog, a ship emerging and someone violently sick, isolated, surrounded by water. There you go. We learn the sick man is our hero, Teddy Daniels, a U.S. Marshall. He has been sent with his partner to the Shutter Island asylum for the criminally insane. It appears a patient has escaped and the Marshalls are there to solve the case. Fog, sick, alone. Remember the clues.

From this traditional set-up, we dive into the traditional police procedural investigation, from the interviews with witnesses including the nut cases inside the asylum and the ex-Nazi doctor

who apparently runs the place like an extension of a death camp. Of course, all that we see isn't real, from the exaggerated suspense music to the creaking doors and dripping ceilings, the dreams and nightmares of poor, confused Teddy (bear) and his new partner who keeps calling him "boss", which you never hear from partners in cop buddy movies. The recurring images of his dead wife and a strange girl who pleads for him to save her haunt Teddy's dreams until his investigation reaches its highest point, on the cliffs of the island. There are hidden agendas, investigations within investigations and pills, cigarettes and rain thwarting our hero's best efforts to unravel the whereabouts of the missing patient. Just when you think the mystery starts to make sense, it doesn't. Just when you think you're hero has figured it all out, he hasn't. Just when you think...oh you get the idea! Fade out to credits and the depressing closing song, Bitter Earth which sums up the resolution of this movie just fine. The Genre The mystery thriller genre is a quaint throw-back to earlier times, before special effects allowed film

Ben Carson Firstly the movie was very well done, not sure how you could agrue that. The "movie sucked" comment at the end could only come from someone scred to think a little. Look back at different clues throughout the movie . Yes there are two possible endings, but IMO threre is only one. reply06 / 14 / 2010 samari1 the only place that worked for me was http://cinemasneak.com/movie/21-shutt... reply05 / 31 / 2010 abortivetelegra movie reply04 / 19 / 2010 jesicahumble u can see STREAMING at http://alturl.com/sy9m yeah, I had to fill out like 30 sec. survey, but no biggie. kinda fun. movie rocks. reply02 / 23 / 2010

gregdwulet Well, I do agree with you in that there isn't really a middle ground here. Either you get completely sucked into the action and are subjected to that "trapped" feeling, thereby making the movie pretty brilliant, or you don't, in which case it sucked. Interesting to see the point of view of someone that didn't. reply02 / 21 / 2010 Craig Forgrave When the guy in the theater yelled out the movie sucked at the end, he got a nervous laugh from others. I love it when you get immediate, honest opinions yelled out in the dark, regardless of whether you agree or not. That's why millions of people go to the movies, for that individual experience to share and compare. 02 / 22 / 2010 lashlr Just got out of the movie. To heck with the Us Marshalls, I feel like it was me that was trapped on Shutter Island for the last 2 hours ! Very heavy handed in its use of imagery, this movie is WORK to watch. Could have been fascinating in the hands of a more deft and self restrained director, but those talents are not expressed here. De Caprio seems ill at ease in the roll and the other actors p

reply02 / 21 / 2010 lashlr I meant trapped by paying 10 bucks to see this over done piece. In fact I got free tickets and I still feel gypped! I didn't feel ill at ease in a dramatic way, I only wanted to escape the overbearing, confusing heavy handed production. 02 / 28 / 2010 Craig Forgrave trapped is exactly what the film makers wanted you to feel, all from the point of view of the main character. I think Scorsese wanted to make several movies here, all rolled together and playing off against each other. 02 / 21 / 2010 kelsikelsi once you process it all, you will understand. hope i helped. reply02 / 21 / 2010 Craig Forgrave Yes, there are many clues about Teddy and his role in the story, as I pointed out he starts off the movie "sick" and uncomfortable around water. This has a big impact on his past experiences. Thanks. 02 / 21 / 2010 kelsikelsi && at the end of the movie when the men were telling "teddy" that he was really "Andrew" -- the ciggarettes were the problem! so if you think about it,, "teddy" IS/WAS actually "Andrew". reply02 / 21 / 2010 Show More
