NORTH SHORE ARTISTS, LYNNE FRANCIS-LUNN AND PETER LUNN EXHIBIT NEW WORK AT THE DRAGONFLY FINE ARTS GALLERY, MARTHAS VINEYARD, OAK BLUFFS Through October 13, 2012 For gallery hours and directions, see www.mvdragonfly.com Beverly residents and husband and wife team, Lynne Francis-Lunn and Peter Lunn are currently exhibiting their art at the Dragonfly Fine Art Gallery. Both are established professionals in widely differing occupations. This is the first time their work has appeared together. Lynne has been involved in the active exploration of a wide variety of textiles and their inherent properties since she was a child, frequently manipulating the physical boundaries and architectonic qualities of traditional constructions found in woven forms such as baskets. In these visually alluring and personally significant woven paperworks, some of her warp and weft strips curl up, cascading in tendrils off the woven paper plane. She has titled her series Islands to Islands. The series is the result of recent intense research into her Portuguese ancestors, who ended up on Chappaquidick and Marthas Vineyard from the Azores. Indeed, Lynnes great-grandmother was born on Chappy in 1886 and Lynne reveals that she wore her wedding ring for inspiration while creating the series. It was a hard life, but always bound by connection to the seafor travel, for livelihood, for survival. This has consumed her creativity of late and the results are powerful. Until about three years ago, Peter did not paint. He is entirely selftaught, working in oils on canvas. Initially, he employed a brush; now, all paintings in the exhibit are completed with an artists pallet knifeonly. His style has evolvedand is still evolvingat an astonishing rate. Initially formalistic, realist genre paintings of ships and the sea, his work now emanates luminous sky and earth

tones of incredible beauty, depth, power and even foreboding. Sometimes the sea and sky are calm and at rest; other views hint at less welcoming weather ahead, the bane of mariners of small craft. For the general observer, the oil paintings are tantalizing glimpses of sea and sky; but for those who sail day vessels and other smaller craft, they are actually part of a larger narrative. The seasoned veteran will be immediately alerted to cues in Peters paintings about not what is just in the moment but what may transpire in the minutes and hours to come. His works creates a personal dialog with those who have spent time on the sea. Although not on view at the Dragonfly Fine Arts Gallery, there is a pairing of Lynne and Peters work which serves as an essay on the lives of this highly creative couple. It is Peters painting of what is believed to be the oldest house Quansoo, on the Vineyard and next to it to it was Lynnes interpretationpainted paper of the same tones of Tisbury Great Pond which were then cut and reformed into cubes, stacked and presented in a landscape format. In that instance, it became clear that despite their different approaches to paint, paper and canvas, they were united from the very first by their seaside upbringings on the Vineyard and the Cape. Lynne and Peters work is currently on view as part of a group show, the main summer exhibit offering at the popularly acclaimed Dragonfly Gallery on Marthas Vineyard in Oak Bluffs.
