Christian Liberties under attack at Vanderbilt University

Vanderbilt University, a private quasi ivy league school, in Nashville, Tennessee has implemented a policy requiring religious student organizations to operate with an absolute non-discrimination policy. The all - comers policy makes it a requirement that any Vanderbilt student, regardless of religious beliefs or sexual orientation is eligible for a leadership position in religious student organizations. (for example: an atheist can run for a leadership office in a Christian student organization at Vanderbilt University). This college group was rejected as a recognized ministry by Vanderbilt University. Is this a common policy at other universities? No. However, two public universities considered enacting this sort of policy in the past two years the University of Florida and Ohio State. In the end, both schools decided to protect religious liberty.

Floridas non-discrimination policy is similar to Vanderbilts but adds the following: A student organization whose primary purpose is religious will not be denied registration as a Vanderbilt University - Nashville, Tenn Registered Student Organization on the Kirkland Hall - administration building ground that it limits membership or leadership positions to students who share the religious beliefs of the organization. The University has determined that this accommodation of religious belief does not violate its Dr. Albert Mohler (President of the Southern Baptist nondiscrimination policy. Theological Seminary) points out Vanderbilt was founded in the 1870s by Methodists. Vanderbilt, like many ivy league schools that date back to the founding era of America, was founded as a Christian school of higher learning (Princeton, Harvard, Yale Please read this article: www.answersingenesis.org/articles/am/v2/n3/ harvard-yale-princeton-oxford-once-christian). In another article published by one of the organizations affected by the new policy, it states, ...an e-mail sent by the University officials demanded for us to change the following statement from our constitution: Criteria for officers selection will include level and quality of past involvement, personal commitment to Jesus Christ, commitment to the organization and demonstrate leadership ability. Vanderbilt instructed the group to remove the phrase commitment to Jesus Christ. Since this policy came into effect, 13 Christian registered organizations decided to defy the new all-comers policy by not changing their constitution as demanded by the University and over a dozen other organizations decided not to continue an open ministry at Vanderbilt. Vanderbilt University's new policy excludes members of Greek life, still allowing them to be selective in their membership and leadership processes. Please pray for those ministering in a college ministry. Generally, universities make it very difficult for organizations to have a presence on their campuses. Pray for boldness as we preach the Gospel among college students.

One of the objectives of PathWay is to empower our college students to utilize their qualifications and skills in service for our Savior Jesus Christ, and one way we do this is through our weekly Bible studies. When Santiago reached chapter 4 in our study on the book of Ephesians, God led him to conduct a unit on spiritual gifts derived from verses 7 through 16. Even though all of our students at the time had accepted Jesus Christ as their Savior, we were a bit surprised that almost all of them did not know of the spiritual gifts named in Gods word. Understanding that the classs knowledge of spiritual gifts was limited, Santiago laid the groundwork before diving into the list of spiritual gifts. He defined what a spiritual gift is, listed the prerequisites of discovering spiritual gifts and emphasized the purpose of spiritual gifts. This groundwork was necessary in getting each student to understand the importance of utilizing our spiritual gifts in service for the Lord once we are saved. As the unit concluded after a few weeks, we could see a noticeable change in the students. Each student could identify their spiritual gift(s) and they understood how to develop their spiritual gift(s). Every time we studied a particular gift, the class would identify a student who fit the criteria of that gift. One student named Amber definitely exhibits Leadership. Another student named Demi has the gift of Service. What a blessing it was to see one student named Mattie confidently name Leadership, Administration, Service and Discernment as her spiritual gifts. Then she went a step further and expressed her desire to apply those gifts in service for the Lord! Seeing how the students are growing in Gods word is one of the greatest blessings that we have experienced with PathWay. What is unique about our organization is that we aim to equip our students to serve the Lord in their local church and empower them to evangelize to the lost wherever they go. This study on spiritual gifts accomplished that, praise the Lord! For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ (Ephesians 4:12).

Being able to attend PathWay has been a huge blessing in my life. The lessons each week are great and they help me understand what I am reading. Also, it has helped me to develop and continue to develop a better personal prayer life, a stronger personal devotional and Bible study time. I love being able to fellowship with people my age and it has helped me to be a little less shy. Im thankful to have these people to teach and lead me about the Lord. Demi C.

For almost a year now, I have been attending the Bible studies offered by PatWay College Outreach Ministry at Elon. The studies have blessed me in so many ways. Not only have I met new people, made new friends, and had great times of fellowship, but I have grown closer to the Lord. In each study, Ive learned something new. I am so grateful for Santiago and the team here at Elon. They have blessed me more than words can say! Zach F.

Pathway College is a place that I can go to learn from God's Word so that I can grow closer to God. Bro. Santiago has taught me so much from the Bible in the few months that I have been privileged to go to Pathway's Bible study that I would never be able to share. As I leave for college, Pathway will be one of the top five things that I miss the most! Amber O. Isaiah 6:8

Dr. Fred Daniel, Jr. - PathWay Board of Director Member My name is Fred T. Daniel, Jr. and I have served as Pastor of Brookhaven Baptist Church in Greensboro, NC for over 24 years. I have also served on the Executive Board of two missions agencies and a Christian radio network. I have been the President of Brookhaven Baptist College for over 12 years. I enjoy seeing the Gospel presented in many places and in many varied ways. What a blessing it has been to see God raise up unique ministries to reach targeted audiences. After all, God commands all people everywhere to repent! He certainly will send men and women to specific fields of service to reach specific people in a specific way in order to call them to salvation and discipleship. Some go to foreign fields to work with a certain ethnic group. Some stay at home and pastor churches. God is busy reaching all men everywhere! About a year ago, God allowed me to become one of the charter Executive Board Members of Pathway College Outreach Ministry. PathWay is a needed ministry in our day and age. Christian young people find themselves in rotten environments at many state and private colleges there is little godly fellowship available many times there is no one to encourage them to stay committed to Christ there may be little opportunity for real Bible training and exhortation. For the non-Christian young person, there are many voices crying for them to commit themselves to some philosophy, agenda or weirdo religion. PathWay is a safe haven for the believing young adult and a rescue center for the unbelieving student. God has called and sent the Olortegui family to Pathway to lead a very unique ministry which is fine-tuned to the minds and hearts of college-aged young men and women. Through a unique blend of fun, food, fellowship and The Bible, God is touching lives and making an eternal difference on the college campus. Santiago and Jackie have invested their lives in the youth of today, and He is blessing their faith in Him and their faithfulness in His work. Pray for the Pathway College Outreach Ministry. Pray for the Olorteguis as they lead the work. Pray for finances, support and helpers. Pray for the souls of yet unreached college students. Pray for the strengthening of the believing college students. Pray that God will bless all the outreach of PathWay. Prayerfully consider letting God use you to support the ministry and the Olortegui family. Maybe, God would have you volunteer to help. Pathway is another specific tool in Gods hands for a specific, and sometimes forgotten, people group. Ask Him how He would have you involved!!!

One of our ministry objectives is EMPOWERMENT, to equip and challenge participants to use their qualifications and skills in the service of our Savior. This is by Personal Evangelism, Mission Trips and Participation in a Local Church. Since our beginning, we had some of our college students asking us to organize a mission trip. Even though that was our desire, the Lord did not open doors for us to conduct a mission trip until now. Late in 2011, we received two requests for us to take a college ministry team abroad (Peru or France). However, France was the only one continuously communicating and planning with us. As soon as we started to promote the trip, the interest started to grow among our students At that point, it was evident to us that the Lord was opening the doors for us to take a team to Paris - France. We also praise the Lord for the vision of our Board of Directors as they approved the creation of PathWay Abound, the missions branch of PathWay College Outreach Ministry. It is very exciting to see a prayer request being answered! Especially, to see the birth of our mission program. This summer, the Lord allowed a team of twelve people to come together and to be Abounds first mission team.

This is our first promo flyer promoting our trip to France

Our mission: Our mission was to assist a missionary church planter, Pastor Bill Hansen. Pastor Hansen has been ministering in Maisons-Laffitte (a suburb near Paris) for 17 years. Our task: Our task was to distribute gospel tracts in mail boxes around MaisonsLaffitte. The excitement of our first mission trip started at our arrival to Piedmont Triad International Airport. The check-in crew from United Airlines encouraged us about our endeavors and said to us: Thank you for going to the mission field for us! Our first stop was in Chicago OHare Int. Airport. Initially, we were supposed to wait 6 hours for our flight out to Paris. However, the waiting turned out to be longer, for a total of 10 hours. But our team held up pretty well, and they used the time to practice their evangelistic tools, to rest and to use the time distribute gospel tracts in our terminal.

By Pastor James Black, Pathway Board of Directors Secretary

With the official call of Brother Santiago as the Executive Director of Pathway College Ministry came the need of his ordination. This is typical of any man called into a specific ministry. It is the responsibility of PathWay to ensure that Santiago knows his doctrine and his call of God before committing a role of leadership to anyone in the ministry. Under the direction of his pastor, Dr. Don Carter and his home church, Pathway continued in this process. On May 26th a council of five pastors questioned and encouraged Brother Santiago concerning his ordination. After several hours of instruction, through fellowship, the council gave their approval. In a special service at Baptist Temple, Dr. Fred Daniel and Dr. Mark Aheron charged Santiago and Jackie of their labor in the ministry. With the blessing of their church and Pathway, Brother Santiago was officially ordained into the Gospel Ministry. A fellowship followed the service, attended by friends and supporters of Pathway Ministry. It is truly a blessing to see Laying of hands charging Santiago to the ministry of PathWay College Outreach Ministry. the Lord call men into this wonderful work, Acts 13:1-4.
