Deans Welcome
As I start my career at UNH Manchester as the new Dean, seeing the excitement among faculty and staff confirms again why Im sure I made a good decision in joining the great team at UNH Manchester. The team is passionate in what they do to help our students, UNH Manchester, and each other to succeed. I am very excited and look forward to meeting all of our faculty, staff, and students. Together, we will continue the great work that has been done by the team under the leadership of Dr. Sally Ward. In addition, we will work together to seek ways that will allow us to take advantage of all opportunities and resources that are available on both our campus and in the Manchester area to: expand our commitment to ensure that our students continue to receive a great education

Get Engaged with Students In Action

Written by Victoria DiPippo

Do you like puppets? Being with kids? Baking? Getting involved in the community? Gift wrapping? This year Students in Action (SIA), a community service based student activities club at UNH Manchester, has arranged a variety of events for students. The semester kick starts on August 23 with First Year Service Day, a service event at the New Hampshire Food Bank. The Food Bank is also looking for volunteers to help the evening of September 19. Students are also encouraged to volunteer at the JFK Coliseum on Beech Street in Manchester throughout the academic year. We will be meeting on the third Saturday of each month from 9:00-12:00 to help distribute food to families in need. Other events this year include volunteering at New Horizons in October; coordinating family events for Families in Transition; raising money for homeless veterans; and running concession stands before student music and theatre club events to provide additional fundraising to the selected charity. Look for holiday gift wrapping in November and December. Proceeds will benefit the New Hampshire Food Bank for the holiday season. Like us on Facebook to keep up to date on upcoming events, or e-mail unhm.communityservice@unh.edu to be added to the e-mail list. Send us your ideas for community events, wed love to hear from you!

Cell Phones for Soldiers

Every phone donated assists Cell Phones for Soldiers in its mission to provide free communication tools to active duty military members and veterans. Donated cell phones are sold to recycling partner, ReCellular. The money received from recycling cell phones is used to purchase calling cards and other communication tools for the U.S. military. Batteries, chargers and accessories are not required but gladly accepted. The drop box will be in the lobby throughout the month of September.

Manchester MPA Student Deputy Fire Chief in Concord

Written by Elizabeth Lannon-Goodwin UNH Master of Public Administration student Sean Toomey, spends his days serving as deputy fire chief at the Concord Fire Department and his nights studying for his masters degree at the UNH Graduate School Manchester Campus. Toomey graduated from UNH in 1998 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering. He worked in the private sector as an engineering consultant and in 2001 completed his Master of Science in Fire Protection Engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute. He joined the Concord Fire Department in 2005 as the assistant life safety officer. When asked why he chose to pursue a career in public service he responded, I felt like as a consultant I was fighting the rulesnow Im not fighting the system, Im helping people. And its in my blood. My grandfather was the fire chief in Manchester for many years. As Toomey rose in the ranks at the fire department, he became increasingly interested in learning more about the administrative functions. He returned to school in the fall of 2010, investigating the UNH Master of Public Administration degree program. I was most interested in the courses that were taught by real-world practitioners which I could directly apply to my current job. And the convenient location of the Manchester campus and course times fit my schedule. Toomey aspires to one day be the state fire marshal. A member of the Greater Concord Leadership Program, Toomey participated in NHs Penguin Plunge benefiting the Special Olympics on a team of 11 other City of Concord officials. When not serving the public, Toomey enjoys raising dogs for his dog sledding team. For more information on UNHs Master of Public Administration program, contact Pam. Neville@unh.edu.

Top 10 Study Strategies

1. Beat procrastination! Teach yourself not to put off tasks. 2. Instead of denying yourself privileges for not studying, offer yourself rewards or incentives for getting work done. 3. Get organized! Ensure that you have separate sections in your binder or notebook for notes, work, and graded materials for each class. 4. Make sure youre taking notes in class not only for information, but also to see how much time your professor spends on a subject area. 5. After class or in the evenings, write a review of key ideas from each class. 6. Be an active reader outline and annotate your textbooks. Either write in your textbooks, or keep notes in a special notebook. 7. Read through textbook sections before theyre reviewed in class. 8. When studying for a test, arrange class and reading notes chronologically to ensure youre studying the appropriate material. 9. Create fact sheets of key ideas and terms scattered randomly on a page. If you can recall details in random order, theyre stored in your brain. 10. A combination of memorization and concept comprehension will yield the longest lasting and most complete knowledge. Scholastic. (n.d.). Top ten study strategies. Retrieved May 18, 2010, from www.scholastic.com.

Congratulations to all of our 20122013 STEM Scholars! Ready for Fall? Before you know it, the fall will be here and classes will be back in session. If you are receiving financial aid, you should make sure that all your required paperwork is completed well before classes begin. Please check your Webcat account or contact the Financial Aid Office to see if youre missing any information. If you are expecting a refund to help with the cost of books, remember that refunds are typically not available until the second week of class. Students need to make alternate arrangements to purchase books and then reimburse yourself once the refund checks become available.
