When I think of August I think of long, hot, lazy days. I also think about a new school year ready to commence. I love August! I love the school supplies in our local stores, the children getting haircuts and readying themselves for a new adventure. I love the excitement of teachers returning to their classrooms readying themselves and their rooms for their students. There is a newness, anticipation, and a sense of wellbeing when August arrives and a new school year is about to begin. Sunset Elementary staff and PTA welcome back our students and parents along with new students and kindergarteners. We hope you are looking forward to a new school year, just as we are. Sunset staff is embracing district initiatives along with their belief in Rigor on the Classroom. Students and parents can expect a rigorous curriculum, rigorous lessons, and rigorous expectations. Sunset staff believes in connecting with the heart of every person through a school-wide discipline plan of Conscious Discipline, Character Counts, and their very own I CAN students of excellence. Students and parents can expect to be treated fairly, heard, cared for and held to a high degree of excellence and selfdiscipline. As principal of Sunset, I encourage parents to partner with teachers for the success of students. Please inquire about the programs mentioned above: any staff member can help you understand our Mission and Vision. Welcome to the staff Mrs. Jill Lynn and Mrs. Kathy Stahl to our First Grade team and Mrs. Becca Manchester as our Media Center Para Pro. Welcome also to all new and returning staff, students and families We are counting on each of you to help Sunset SHINE. ~Brenda Farmer, Principal

The main office doors are the only doors unlocked for entrance from the outside. If you are not using the Kiss and Go lane and are personally dropping your children off for school, if it is between 745800 am you may drop them in the office and they can make their way to the Commons, please do not go past the office area into the hallway. From 800810 am, you can walk outside to drop them at their assigned playground. Our building security is not to inconvenience you; it is to protect the children. Welcome back everyone! The first week in the music classroom went well. I am pleased to announce that Sunset Elementary will again offer an Honor Choir for the 4th and 5th grades. This select group is chosen by tryouts. Rehearsals will be every Thursday after school from 3:154:15 p.m., except on days when we are not in session. Auditions start Aug. 27th and will be held during school hours. We will again be offering a World Music Drumming Ensemble this fall, for selected 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students and parents. Rehearsals will be every Tuesday after school from 3:15-4:15 p.m., except on days when we are not in session. Auditions will start mid September and will be held during school hours. There are many new students in our school and they will need to have time to build foundational skills before auditions in September. During the month of September, the Sunset students in the music classroom will be singing a variety of songs, exploring drumming techniques, focusing on rhythm patterns, part independence, exploring movement, steady beat, and playing a variety of musical instruments. Rememberrecorder forms and money are due for all 4th and 5th grade students on Friday, August 31st . Thanks, Miss Pinney
