Sight Word Activities

1. Play a match game with 5-10 flash cards that have sight words on them. Use some known words and some unknown words. Each time a card is turned over the player has to read the word out loud. 2. Make a game board and roll the dice after reading a word correctly. 3. You can make sentences out of sight word flash cards. Making the sentences fun can add motivation. Example: I see Pikachu under the couch. 4. Play tic-tac-toe. Put a sight word on each of the nine spaces. Before a player can put an X or an O, he/she needs to read the word on the space. 5. Before reading with your child, decide on one or two sight words that you will hunt for during reading. Have your child tally the number of times the word occurs in the book. 6. Choose a few sight words to hunt for in a magazine or newspaper and cut them out. Glue the words on a piece of paper and write some of your own words to make sentences or a short story. 7. Flash cards also work well with some children. Make a pile of words that were read with minimal hesitation and a pile of words that were not known. Have your child challenge himself to make the pile of unknown words smaller as time goes on.
