Problem 1.1: GSM is using 890-915 MHz spectrum band for reverse channels and 935-960MHz spectrum band for forward channels. GSM also uses 100 kHz guard band at the beginning and at the end of each spectrum band (i.e., 200 kHz guard band per simplex spectrum band). GSM radio channels are using 200 kHz channel bandwith. How many total duplex channels can be supported in GSM to carry data/control traffic? Problem 1.2: Assume each reverse channel frame contains six time slots with 324 bits per time slot, and within each time slot, assume there are six guard bits, six bits reserved for ramp-up, 28 synchronization bits, 12 control bits, and 12 bits for supervisory control signals. a) Determine the frame efficiency for this cellular system. b) If the frame duration is 49.85 ms, determine the number of information bits sent to each user per frame and the bit rate per user. c) If half-rate speech coding is used, then 12 users may be supported within a frame. Determine the raw data rate and frame efficiency for users with half rate speech coding. Problem 1.3: A wireless communication system uses TDMA/TDD technique for communication. There are 32 users share the channel at the same time. In each TDMA slot 16 bits are transmitted and received. The total bit rate of this system is 64 kbps. Find the downlink transmission bit rate to each user. Repeat the problem for a TDMA/FDD system. Problem 1.4: A TDMA/FDD/DS-CDMA wireless communication system has the capacity to provide services to 256 users. a) If we convert each bit to 16 chips in the process of DS-CDMA, how many slots should be available over TDMA? b) If the Base Station transmission rate to each user is 20 kbps, find the total transmission rate should be available in this system. Problem 1.5: Two mobiles, X and Y, are transmitting concurrently using code division multiple access (CDMA) technique. A receiver hearing both of these transmissions, receives the combined signal X+Y and uses CDMA technique to despread it and obtain the original message signal (data bits) of mobile X. The receiver has the codeword of X as 010011. Obtain the data bits (message signal) that is transmitted from X.
