Adult Graduation Diploma


The Ministry of Education has developed regulations to assist adults whose formal education has been interrupted to reach a level of education identical with regular secondary school graduation. To be eligible to graduate on this program, adult students (19 years of age or over) must earn at least 20 credits in the secondary system or five courses in the post-secondary system. Courses and credits can be counted from either or both of the following: BC School System - Secondary Qualifying Courses 1 2 3 Language Arts 12 Mathematics 11 or 12 Three Grade 12 Ministryauthorized Courses (4 credits each) OR Social Studies 11 (4 credits) and 2 Grade 12 Ministry-authorized Courses (4 credits each) Total: 4 credit course 4 credit course 12 credits or or or College ABE Program - Qualifying Courses A Provincial Level English or higher An Advanced or Provincial Level or higher Mathematics 3 additional courses at the Provincial Level or higher OR Advanced Social Sciences and 2 Provincial level courses or higher 12 credits 20 credits Total: 5 courses

NOTES: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Some Grade 12 courses have a Grade 11 prerequisite which normally must be met. Some Grade 11 courses have a Grade 10 prerequisite which may need to be met. A Grade 11 beginners language course does not serve as a prerequisite for the Grade 12 language course. Students enrolled in the Adult Diploma program are not required to write Provincial Examinations, but may choose to do so. Students on the Adult Dogwood program may not use any 2 credit course toward completion of graduation requirements. Courses other than those listed above may meet graduation requirements. 1. To be eligible for the Adult Graduation Diploma, a person must be 19 years or older. An 18 year old who has been out of school for at least one year may be admitted to an adult program with approval from the enrolling institution. 2. Three courses must be completed through enrollment in a course of Prior Learning Assessment after enrolling in an adult program. Prior Learning Assessment may be used to meet any of the requirements for the Adult Diploma. Prior Learning Assessment involves a variety of techniques including equivalency reviews, challenge processes, in-depth interviews, etc. 3. In the secondary system Provincial Exams are optional for students on an adult program. If the student chooses not to write a provincial exam, the grade will be reported with a Q code. It should be noted that some post-secondary institutions may not accept examinable courses for admission purposes unless the secondary system provincial exam has been written. Consult an academic advisor. 4. Any course that is Ministry-authorized by either the Ministry of Education (4 credit) or the Ministry of Advanced Education as requirements for graduation may be used towards the BC Adult Graduation Diploma. Adult programs cannot use Locally Developed (BAA) courses. COUNSELLING Counselling with an academic advisor is available at all locations. Call ahead to make an appointment. Please bring a copy of your proof of citizenship or Permanent Residency AND a school transcript or other school documents to the counselling session. These documents are used to confirm tuition status or to verify prerequisites for some courses. A valid Student Learning Plan will be required for registration. Upon completion of the Adult Secondary School program students must meet with an advisor to apply for their Adult Secondary Diploma. Telephone an Adult Education Centre nearest to you.
