Challenges to energy in China

Chinas per capita reserves of major fossil energy resources in 2002 are far below the world averages: Crude oil: 2.6 tons/person 11.1% of the world average Natural gas: 1,074 cubic meters/person, 4.3% of the world average Coal: 90 tons/person 55.4% of the world average Extensive utilization of coal leads to serious air pollution: 70% of PM, 90% of SO2, 67% of NOX and 82% of acid rain Coal recovery rate is only around 30% in China, about half lower than that in developed countries Energy utilization efficiency is only about 31.2%, lower 10 percentages than that in developed countries
