elaborate on this Medrash. The above quoted passage, as it stands, is mind-boggling. However, there are two insights that may be pointed out: The first insight is that Moshe Rabbeinu felt jealousy. "I will no longer have the exclusive company of the Almighty that I've enjoyed all these years. Someone else will!" He was envious of Yehoshua. The Chidushei HaRim asks how it is possible that Moshe was jealous of Yehoshua. We are taught that a person is jealous of everyone except for his son and his student [Sanhedrin 105b]. That being the case, what is the Medrash saying? The Chidushei HaRim gives a mind shattering answer. The Chidushei HaRim says that if I am a Rebbe and my son becomes a Rosh Yeshiva I will not be jealous. I will be proud of him. If he becomes far more successful than I ever was, I will take it in stride and with pride. However, not if he takes MY job! Not if I am forced into retirement, and he takes over my congregation or my yeshiva! That is hard to take, even from a disciple and even from a son. The second observation to be made on this Medrash is the following: Moshe Rabbeinu is 120 years old. He is about to die. And yet, he, himself, feels that he was being gripped with envy. He himself admits that the emotion he felt was worse than one hundred deaths. We see from here that if anyone ever claims: "I am too old to be jealous", "I am above that already" - don't believe him. We are never finished with the challenge of being jealous until we are in the grave. At least Moshe Rabbeinu recognized it and admitted it. He was sensitive enough and wise enough to feel it and to declare "I don't want any part of it!"

That is the difference between Moshe Rabbeinu and us. We don't see it. We don't feel it. We are just overcome and consumed by it. Moshe's words, as quoted by the Medrash should become our philosophy -- death 100 times over is better than succumbing to the feeling of jealousy.

Joseph A Levy was born in Egypt and in1958 came to the US with his family, as part of what he calls the Second Exodus from Egypt. He grew up in New Jersey and holds a Law Degree from the Brooklyn Law School. He has lived in Queens for the past 30 years. Mr. Levy is passionate about and has spoken extensively on the subject of the Jews from the Arab states. He will present a general look at Jewish History in Arab lands and why the Jews, who were well off economically and had lucrative businesses, left their homes and homelands in the 20th century. He will also focus specifically on Egypt and Egyptian Jewry; its modern history and how the current political situation and the peace with Israel affects the remaining Jewish community.

GNS TALMUD TORAH The GNS Talmud Torah is a full Jewish after school program dedicated to excellence in an engaging and respectful learning environment in which Jewish children can become proud, caring, responsible, and dedicated members of the Jewish people and American society. The Talmud Torah meets weekly on Mondays and Wednesdays from 4:30 to 6:30 pm. As part of the expanded Talmud Torah program, we offer a special MATAN program for Bat-Mitzvah aged girls. The class is taught by Morah Netta Jansenson, an outstanding faculty member of NSHA, who is known for her creativity and warmth. The program will meet on Wednesday evenings from 5:30 to 7:00 pm and will begin after the Sukkot holiday in mid Oct. for 12 classes to be completed by the end of January. Please contact the Synagogue office to register your child. YOM KIPPUR APPEAL In the coming days you will be called or approached by dedicated members of our YK Appeal Committee. Nov 4: Together with Dos Yiddish Vort, a bus trip to NYC to the Yiddish Theatre to see "The Golden Land", a professional musical in both English and Yiddish. A light dinner will be provided after the performance. Cost is $65 per person (includes bus, theater and dinner). Checks to GNS Mens Club. GNS ANNUAL FALL BLOOD DRIVE GNS is sponsoring its Annual Fall Blood Drive on Sunday, Oct. 28th from 8:15am-2:15 pm in the gym. Everyone who is 16 or older and weighs 110 pounds or more and who feels well and healthy can donate blood and help save the life of a friend or neighbor. If you are unable to donate, you can still help by volunteering the day of the drive or by making phone calls in advance. Donating blood or volunteering to help with calls in advance or on the day is also a great opportunity for your young folks to earn community service credit.
