Volume 12, Number 41

Give Me Mine!
Luke 15:12And the younger of them said to his father, 'Father, give me the portion of goods that falls to me.' Greed is an ugly thing. It is also a confusing thing. For, it seems to me that there is a very fine line that divides the aggressive approach to gaining what is rightfully yours, and self-serving gain for personal pride. The truth be known, most of us are not fully aware when we have crossed that line. We readily recognize it in other people, but rarely in ourselves. Generosity, that is seen in gracious behavior is a beautiful thing. Generally, it is not a confusing thing. There may be times that we wonder about the motivation of the generous person. We may want to assign some less than altruistic motive. Still, generosity is mostly seen for what it is. It may have a bit of a blurred line between forced expectations and benevolent desires, but generosity is still generous. So, where do you stand? From what has been explained to me about the parable in our text, the younger brother (the prodigal) was within accepted customs to ask his father for what was coming to him by way of inheritance. It was the attitude he appeared to have, and subsequent actions that showed the reason for wanting an early inheritance that revealed his selfishness. From the time we are like little children, we tend toward an attitude of making sure that we get what we believe is owed to us. We often try to find a kind of self-determined balance. In other words; if you got yours, I want mine. Just try to buy one child a candy bar without buying anything for the other children. You will hear the cry, Thats not fair! Generosity and greed of spirit are not polar opposites. They may sit in close proximity to one another and be somewhat difficult to discern. I have to admit that I am much more impressed with the attitude in the radio personality who commonly says, Better than I deserve. The elder brother of the prodigal was worried, but the father reminded him that all the father had was his all the time. Russ
