Lightning Ridge

Art Gallery and Residences

The project is located in Three Miles opal mining field, adjacent to the town Lightning Ridge, Australia. The site is remote from most infrastructure and the specific climatic condition required a detailed attention. The brief asked for a development of an art gallery, studio and accomodation for the caretakers and three artists who can spend time working on their projects up to nine months in there anually. The building is self-support with its own power and water supply, as well as waste management system. Disabled access must be well thought out in the circulation and in one of the three artists residence and studio.

Three Miles Opal Field

Lightning Ridge is a still active opal mine located in outback NSW on the worlds richest deposit of black opal. In the hot dusty arid landscape, the physical conditions are severe and unfamiliar and temperature are extreme. Constraints such as very limited rainfall and its unbearable summer heat making the place even more extraordinary. In one glance, the place looks estranged, but as one stays longer, the rich history layers accumulated in its ground starts overflowing. The constant excavation changes the topology and new layer of ground, embedded with its gems and stories are resurfacing. Sign of human intervention can be seen from many abandoned mining holes and dirt mounds. For once, mankind needs to be reminded with the powerful nature.

This project tries to bring public to be more intimate with nature, leaving their worldly comfort and to be more appreciative to the nature however harsh it is. The journey starts from winding concrete colonnade and visitors senses are being evoked by the presence of nature, slowly introduced in the gallery. It ends at the look-out point where the most beautiful view can be enjoyed. Hopefully they can leave Lightning Ridge with a powerful message of nature embedded in heart.

Concrete is used extensively for its thermal mass properties and durability in harsh climatic condition. The gallery needs a controlled light environment to showcase its collection. The harsh daylight is softened in the towering section at the southern side which also acts as malqaf for cross ventilation. A large part of the roof faces north and solar panels are installed on it. Precast concrete is used due to its ease of construction and irregular shapes.

Gothenberg

Nature Centre

The project is located in Rosenlund, in city of Gothenberg, Sweden and is by the biggest river in Sweden, Gota Alv river. The site is within a walking distance to a small tourist attraction. However the site itself is almost empty and lacks urban quality. It is seeking to create a new public space. The brief asked for a development of a natural interpretation center to relate to the river, a small cafe, a bicycle parking area and a small waiting area for the exMaster of Chalmers University, Spring 2012 Type Location Directed by : cultural, public, urban : Gothenberg, Sweden : Prof. Sten Gromark isting ferry terminal located at the site.

Barren Rosenlund
River Gota Alv
Rosenlund is a small industrial suburb lacking of any urban quality. Although it is sited next to the biggest river in Sweden, the industrial characteristic is too strong and making the experience of the area unenjoyable. Manmade structures are very conspicuous in this area, noticed from a power plant with its towering chimneys and empthy asphalt ringroad, lacking of vegetations. The site is located at the mouth of one of the oldest manmade canal in Sweden. And across the river, towering cranes jungle with its bright orange colours can be seen from shipping containers dockland. It is difficult to build a nature centre in the middle of the city, especially when human interventions to the nature can be seen clearly. This nature center tries to bring a journey starting from an urban environment that city people are used to, and finalized at a space where they can focus and appreciate the nature.

Entering the centre, visitors are greeted with the convenience of a caf and a small exhibition space depicting the relation between Goteborg and Gota Alv river. The large glazing walls offer visitors to an expanse view of the crowds waiting for ferries, ships moving its loads, houses and towering cranes across the river. An open area is reserved on the west side to allow abundant afternoon sun being admitted into the centre. The low building height responds to the minimum built structure along the river ridge, and the dark grey brick material reflects the rivers color.

Instead of a 24/7 lounge, a semi-open waiting area is constructed for safety reason, strengthening the relationship with the ferry landing. Here the public can readily see any incoming ferries and enjoy the maximum view on daytime, as well as the flickering artificial lights being reflected on the river at night, all while they are waiting. The glass cover will protect visitors from prevailing wind and rain, while separate seating area is also available to enjoy the warm sunlight.

North Bondi

Mixed-use Apartment

This project involves development of a mixed-use building consisting of two restaurant and four apartments with one of them disabled accessible. All the council codes are to be met as a BCA compliance report is to be produced after the project. The building is envisioned to be a very open living space to respond to the very outgoing lifestyle in North Bondi. However, some form of threshold between inside and outside needed to be established to protect the privacy of the residence, especially when there is a public park opposite the site, and restaurants on the ground floor.

North Bondi
North Bondi is an Eastern Suburb near Bondi Beach. Its proximity to the beach shaped a very distinctive lifestyle. It is very often to see people walking around carrying surf boards, or sitting in cafe and enjoying the outdoor activitites. This project aims to embrace the outgoing lifestyle while working in scale to connect the seemingly fragmented parts of the suburb. The site itself is located right in front of a public park and amazing view toward the hilly Eastern side is possible.

To comply with the local council code, the volume is broken down into two with a connecting hallway in between. Not only it breaks down the scale, it also allows each unit to get First Floor Plan more extensive view into the park and surroundings. The strong beach sun is mitigated by steel louvers, veiling the space behind as semi-outdoor space, approriate to retain the outdoor lifestyle of Bondi. Cross ventilation is achieved in splitting each unit as a double-storey height. Second Floor Plan

House A (in progress)

The project is located in a new residential complex development area in Jakarta, Indonesia. The current empty lot with no neighboring buildings leads to a design more concentrated to passive design and its courtyard treatment. The family asks for a seven bedrooms house with a wet and dry kitchens. Fengs-shui is partly integrated into the design as a typical Asian culture. Slated timber louvers are installed on East facade for shading harsh early morning sun and filtering the view to the public park across the road, as well as providing privacy. Timber is chosen to introduce a natural material in the contemporary tropical architecture. More daylight and cross ventilation is introduced in an internal void, planted with fragrant creeping vegetations to bring more nature into the house.

The Automat

Three Rooms

The project is a conceptual in an attempt to interpret a painting into a set of spaces. A short and concise sentence is then created to capture the paintings atmosphere. It results in designing three rooms with an understanding of materiality and natural lights role in giving the desired atmosphere.

For this project, the site chosen is a steep cliff, open into an expansive view.

Enligthenment Contemplation Confinement

First Room

Automat (1927) is a painting by Edward Hopper which portrays a lone woman staring into a cup of coffee in an automat late at night. Art critics often cite the work as an example of urban alienation.

A small woman who sits introspectively, she confines herself in her sanctuary, perched at the edge of the cliff .

Second Room

Third Room

| 21 The first room is an enclosed space in rough concrete material, buried at the edge of a cliff. A small seating alcove dressed in warm timber is available in the middle of the space, inviting people to rest from the coldness of the concrete. The restricted shelter calls for a

CONFINEMENT. An obligque wall at the end of the first room directs light from the
next room, enticing people to take the steps and leave the frigid first room. The next room is of warm timber, resurfacing from the underground. An expansive but low opening makes people to sit down to be able to enjoy the view, suitable for CONTEMPLATION. The fiB

nal room is built of concrete with slit openings and a small niche on ground for seating. Even though the concrete experience before is cold, here people are invited to sit on the niche and gaze upward to the openings, which are now resemble a cross. On this space, they will experience ENLIGHTENMENT.

Rehabilitating Town Square

The project is located in a UNESCO world heritage listed city of Karlskrona, Sweden. The town is known as Swedens only baroque town and the only remaining naval base of the country. The brief asks for a rehabilitation of its abandoned town square to suit modern urban needs but still retain its Baroque characteristic and not against the heritage policy. Urban mapping is done to relate the importance of the square with the whole town. Study of sustainability and parking allocation are essential in this project.

The Baroque town square is located at the heart of the island town and is surrounded by many civic buildings with a very important King Karl statue at the centre. Unfortunately the significant square, once used in military parade, is now occupied only as a parking area. An abandoned railway tunnel is connected with a bunker below the square.

The strategy is to free the square from any cars and to sculpt the square three-dimensionally. The descending steps for seating and shelter the prevailing southern wind. Different materiality sets to break the square into smaller scale. The tunneling bunker is now brought up into public attention, appropriate for exhibition spaces.

Re: Reference for Angelithin

To Whom It May Concern, I was Angelithins design tutor for the Glenn Murcutt studio in semester 2, 2011, 3rd year Architecture at UNSW. I have known Angelithin since August 2011 and can only comment on her performance in the design subject that I tutored her in. Angelithin is one of the finest students I have ever had the pleasure of teaching. She was a considered and rigorous student, her approach to design was sophisticated, mature and specific. Angelithin was willing to learn and took on complex ideas quickly. She is able to sketch complex spatial arrangements in a clear and accurate manner and has shown that she can follow through on her ideas with carefully worked out and consistent drawings. Her hand drawing skills are considerable and her model making ability was impressive. Angelithin showed initiative with self-directed research and chose relevant and interesting precedents for her work. Angelithins final presentation in the studio received an HD mark, her drawings and models clearly and concisely represented her very advanced design, landscape and construction thinking. Angelithin is a considerate and careful person. She has proved to me that that she is able to cope with the demands of working independently in what is a demanding and complex course. Angelithin has a genuine desire to broaden her horizons within architecture and also life. It is my opinion that working in an architectural office will give Angelithin the opportunity to develop her already considerable skill and that she would benefit from it greatly, returning to UNSW a more rounded and experienced student. I have no reservations in recommending Angelithin as an undergraduate employee and believe that she would be a valuable asset to any office. Yours Sincerely,

Ashley Dunn NSW ARB No. 7547 Director
