Breaking the 4th Wall By: kaushalprabhakar: 1 week, 6 days ago by ~kaushalprabhakar Journals / Personal Let me first define

you the the idea of the fourth wall it was made explicit by philosopher and critic Denis Diderot. It is an imaginary "wall" at the front of the stage or actual screen itself or the device upon which you play the video game or watch a movie . Speaking directly to or otherwise acknowledging the audience through the camera in a film or television program, or through this imaginary wall in a play, is referred to as "breaking the fourth wall"also being able to break that wall is about reaching the player in a way that cause them to believe the existence of the fictional character or the element having the implications in the real world . Just the simple idea of deriving the relation between the virtual world and the real world to make them seem related for a moment creating a sense defined as "suspension of disbelief . There are number of examples available in the market that has achieved it in a effective manner but are not very well known .Some of the examples are in the "metal gear"franchise when the villainous Psycho Mantis is confronted, he "reads the player's mind" (actually their memory card). In Jak 3 a monk yells at Jak and Daxter "This isn't a game!", causing them to look at the player with confused expressions. And again it is easy to underestimate the impact of these implications but these smaller instances that may appear unnecessary are actually very relevant to the players .It makes them attached to the game in a strange manner .The success of the whole metal gear series is of course testimonial to these revelations. Game designers need to realize that more often player do not seek an incisive look at their action but rather the experience it provides and of course it is up to the us not enforce unethical parameters .And yes players may be aware of unrealistic nature of things but yet they are still surprised by the way it manages to intrigue into their actual life .Theaters have done this on countless occasions and ask kids about "Dora the explorer" and they would tell you that it is not just another cartoon on the TV .Infact the entertainment media that emphasizes on the audience participation is the longest reigning in the market .Of course, we have witnessed in past in numerous expo's some the prototypes of the arcade style game that had features of motions sensing guns and shoes that you could wear .They do simulate the gaming environment to better extent .But those hardware cant be launched into the mass market or its difficult to commercialize them instead of putting them in expensive game parlors .So ,this concept of breaking the 4th wall need not be heavy it can be simple and yet be very tricky!

Gameplay Vs Game mechanics :By:kaushalprabhakar: Sep 17, 2012, 6:26:58 AM by ~kaushalprabhakar Journals / Personal Most the people have the concept that gameplay and game mechanics are two different terms while others find hard to differentiate between them .. i am going to try and define these two terms first ...gameplay is actually a replacement word for screenplay in movies that is actually decided by the director and rendered in the form of different shots .. The elements are location ,actors, events and succession of events how the camera flows showcasing the happening is called screenplay ... Now in video games there is no scope for such element because we don't direct the scene .We give the opportunity to the player itself by handling them over the control of the camera so the player is the director of his own experience .. This is the true ability of the video games today to be able to tell the story in a way players replicate .. Having said this in gameplay every high-lightened sense of events and game progression itself in terms of objectives is defined as gameplay ... Then game mechanics is the game rules and control structure of the game "the very method of interaction with the playable character can be called as game mechanics " Now often the game mechanics are introduced to the player in the beginning of the game and is expanded as the player levels up and hence it is the technical aspects of the game design ... While the gameplay is the actual experience that the player gets while playing the game that most importantly decides the fun factor of the game .. Game mechanics the innovation behind making the experience possible .. Also a different perspective can be presented by combining both the gameplay and game mechanics as one and call it "gameplay mechanics " to reflect the creation behind the most notable games that have revolutionized the gameplay experience by adding the break through technology in game interaction examples 1."the open world combat system in prince of Persia :warrior within "2.the dynamic combat system in batman:arkham asylum" 3."also the gameplay elements of heavy rain and amnesia :dark descent " These are the list of games that have implemented the game mechanics that made creation of such unique gameplay experience possible.. So whenever we associate the technical aspects of the field we can necessarily add the term mechanics to it in the same way as "story mechanics"...

World of recreation By:kaushalprabhakar: Sep 19, 2012, 5:16:52 AM by ~kaushalprabhakar Journals / Personal We the humans in 21st century have a lots and lots of options when it comes to destressing oneself . We do however notice that each age group has adapted to certain mediums .But all the forms of entertainment require some co-ordination of our mind and body to be able to experience them .The list is massive but on a brief we can say: * Concert * Lecture * Magic * Mass media * Radio * Sports * Storytelling * Cinema * Video games We have sports for those activities that keep us physically fit and also keep us engaged. As in-case of harsh climate outside we even have the traditional indoor games like chess and other board games. But now the digital era has a very massive grip on our psyche as more and more people are hooked to their TV sets ,watching movie and playing video games. Among all the forms of entertainment available video games are the most interactive .And also the most ultimate combination of arts and technology. As the video games have evolved today to a extent that a single title is capable of producing the multiple experiences of various genres. We see the true potential of video games in helping the human society to be able to take up the challenges of life in the perspective of different person (the protagonist of the game). The RPG genres are on the frontiers of the this innovation helping us experiment the life with different traits and different characters that furthers help us discover our own self. Also the growth happens in terms of understanding different cultures and their values of historical significance . In the end not just to nod our head that we know but to be able to offer a helping hand to everyone with statement that "we understand." In others forms of media the message is often represented or shown to the people but we are the first of its kind that lets them experience it in their own ways and hence a highly immersive medium is born that gives people the unmatchable sense of satisfaction .
