Volunteers Required
This October marks breast cancer awareness month with Pink Ribbon Day falling on Monday 22 October. Pink Ribbon Day aims to help raise awareness about breast cancer, as well as raise funds for research, early prevention and patient support programs. Between Thursday 18 October and Monday 22 October we have 25 merchandise stalls running at most shopping centres accross the ACT and we desperately need volunteers to help out with these stalls. Volunteering at stalls is easy - 2 stalls being held @ Riverside & Karabar All you need to do is look after a table of our merchandise and serve customers who walk by. You won't be by yourself - there are two people on each shift and each shift runs for two hours. If you are able to help out we would love to hear from you! Many thanks, Kathleen Bleakley Regional Programs Coordinator Southern Region kathleenb@nswcc.org.au
Volunteers for the 2012 AWD Junior Championships The 2012 Athletics Australia Athletes with Disabilities (AWD) Junior Championships will be held at the AIS Track and Field facility in Bruce on 10-11 November. Our club (ACT Junior Talent Squad for Athletes with a Disability) has been asked to provide volunteers to support the event and its officials. Although some of the volunteers will come from within our small club we would appreciate assistance from members of your club to ensure that there are enough volunteers for things to run smoothly. The Championships (for 12 to 19 year olds) run from 25pm on Saturday 10 November and from 9.30am 12pm on Sunday 11 November. Volunteers are given an Athletics Australia T-Shirt and hat to wear and are provided with meals and drinks. Athletics ACT will also be running its regular Summer Series athletic event to cater for Open athletes (those over 19 years old) during the weekend. We need volunteers to undertake the following simple tasks: Athlete Check-in/Call Room Assistants Basket Handlers Meal Assistants (2) Scoreboard Operators (2) Medal Assistants (2)
Athlete Check-in Assistants need to be start at around mid-day on Saturday to check athletes into their events and provide them with their number patches. This job will be busy for several hours on Saturday and again for a short time Sunday morning. Call Room Assistants will be required to take paperwork between the Call Room and the officials in the Commonwealth Room office in the Grand Stand. Basket Handlers duties include providing baskets at start lines for athletes to put clothing and personal items in and getting them back to athletes after their events. Meal Assistants will be required to hand out pre-made rolls and drinks to officials and volunteers at lunch times and set out salads etc and cook sausages for an evening BBQ. Scoreboard Operators will be stationed at field events to put up scores cards on low boards for the officials. Medal Assistants will help officials with medals at Medal Ceremonies. It would be great to get your help to ensure that the 2012 AWD National Championships is a success and that young athletes with disabilities have support to reach their sporting goals. Let me know by email jenny.price@iinet.net.au or phone 0408 714378 if you are able to help. Kind Regards, Jenny Price President, ACT Junior Talent Squad for Athletes with a Disability

In Japan, we place great importance on the value of work. Whatever we are called to do, we should do it to the very best of our abilities, with dignity and with pride. Whether the job is running a country or shining shoes, there is honor in every vocation. I grew up embracing this belief, but I had never stopped to contemplate it. One day, in my third year in Rotary, we had a speaker at our club who talked about the purpose of ones livelihood. He asked, why do we work hard? What is the importance of our work? I had never thought about this before. I never saw it as a question. We work to earn money. We work to be successful. We work because it is required of us. To me, this was all. On that day, I learned about the idea of vocational service. It was the idea that through our work, we can serve others. We think about others needs, and grow to care more for the needs of our communities. We build positive connections between people, and a more peaceful world. This is the idea that has changed my life. It did not change how much I worked, or how hard I worked. But it changed why I worked, and how I experienced my life. It has made me see a higher purpose in everything I do. The idea of Service above Self is an idea that is unique to Rotary. But it is an idea that can be embraced by anyone. And I believe very much that in Rotary, and beyond Rotary, we can build Peace through Service.

There seems to be some concern about what to wear to the Back to the Beach dinner to be held at the Soldiers Club on Saturday 27 October. The Conference Committee is trying to keep the conference reasonably casual for the whole weekend and that would include the dinners on both Friday and Saturday night. People are encouraged to come dressed as they feel comfortable reminding everyone that there is a dress code for access to the Soldiers Club so no bikinis, Speedos (thank heavens!) or thongs. Some will wear beach themed gear while others will wear neat casual gear whatever you are comfortable in and please dont feel obliged to dress up to match the theme if you dont wish to. The Committee wants everyone to feel comfortable and enjoy the night.
