BPILA Meeting Minutes May 3, 2012

Meeting called to order A motion was made by Jen Medema with a second from Dan Bailey to approve agenda and meeting minutes. Motion carried. Reports Treasurers report Paul Mulheisen reported that we have total balance of $3,200 in checking and $2208 in savings. We will soon be making a $2500 deposit toward July fireworks. To date, we have just 25 memberships. Cooperative Lakes Management Program Dan Bailey reported that regular lake testing will start in a few weeks. Our phosphate levels have remained the same, chlorophyll is up by 1 point and transparency has improved by 1 point. Dan will look into dissolved oxygen testing for next year. Newsletter update Pat Talbott needs articles for next edition. Dan will send article on seawalls and natural wildlife implications. Jen will submit article on new township ordinances. Also a suggestion made to include note about using washed sand when putting in sand on lake frontage/shoreline. Tom Manikowski recommended that the township notify BPILA residents when permits are approved for seawall installations. A recommendation was also made to include association membership reminders in the next newsletter, along with a self-addressed envelope. Provide paying members with a gift of a t-shirt or boat flag? Also recommended ability for residents to pay via PayPal; will provide PayPal links in email, on website and Facebook page. Social Media/Website Update Scott DeMeyer reported 10 new likes on Facebook (just search Big Pine Island, Belding) and 775 hits to the website. Send any lake pictures to Scott if youd like them posted to the site.

Old Business Fireworks Update Scott Marks reported that we will continue with the same show for the same price - $5000. He is awaiting an update from the company so that permits can be filed with the township. Board members recommended that sheriff patrol expense not be included this year; there is ample coverage of sheriff over the holiday; residents can call for any incidents. Jen will look into getting quotes on promotions to help bolster fireworks donations (i.e. Frisbee or American flag).

Summer/Fall Activities Board discussed sponsoring a fishing tournament on June 9th (free fishing day) on BPIL, with prize donations by BPILA. Tom Manikowski and Dan Bailey will organize; an email will be sent to lake residents with details. A motion was made by Tom Manikowski to allocate $250 in support of tournament. Second by Dan Bailey. Motion carried. Suggestion also made to sponsor a 5k run/walk in the fall and provide BPILA t-shirts.

New Business Township Supervisor report Township Supervisor Frank Force reported that the Grattan Irrigation project is basically completed; 2 additional large guns will be added by end of June and there are 4 new flow meters and new control stations. There are four new township ordinances: - Sodium chloride brine ordinance: new water softeners have to discharge somewhere other than sewer system - Marijuana control: improvement on state law as to who, where and how much can be grown - Noise ordinance: decibel levels by zone and times - Address: must make street addresses apparent on homes/mailboxes BPILA is welcome to set up a table for the association at the annual township Memorial Day events at the twp hall. Contact Frank to post any non-profit events on the township website. Frank suggested attending upcoming Township meetings to address any concerns with drains. Riparian Magazine Subscriptions Magazine subscriptions are $14/year or $8/year for bulk rate. Paul currently receives one on behalf of the BPILA. A motion was made by Dan Bailey to increase membership association dues in 2013 and include the Riparian magazine as a benefit to members. Any new 2012 members will receive it gratis. Second by Jen Medema. Motion carried. Paul will send the membership list to MLSA before May 15th. Lake Pesticide Permit Dan reported that there is standard language in these permits. There is a lake survey Tuesday at 8 a.m. at the ramp for interested parties. Also, curly leaf pond weed is quite thick on the lake. PLM will spot treat, but not too early in order to avoid re-growth. BPILA Brand Board discussed spreading the word about the BPILA brand via the township website and a Memorial Day expo table at twp hall. Emails can be sent as reminder to lake residents.
