To further tame Patricias worried thoughts, I used future-oriented hypnotic imagery by having her imag- ine herself in the future doing all the activities she enjoyed, such as going to Disneyland with Cathy or out to dinner and a movie with a friend, completely pain-free. Next, I gave Patricia suggestions to increase her regular physical activity, which I felt would be helpful for her condition and her mood. She had told me she used to enjoy swimming (a wonderful exercise for chronic pain patients), but like many chronic pain patients, she was fearful that physical activity might make her pain worse or cause her harm. Instead of having her immediately imagine herself swimming, I asked her to rst visualize wading in the pool and enjoying the refresh- ing water. On subsequent sessions, I had her imagine increasing her activity in the poolalways feeling safe and condent in her ability to take care of her body and enjoying the feeling of being active.
