Community Service Day out at Berjaya Times Square Fun Park - 3 November 2012
It all started after a very busy morning for the club. Karen and Graham, as ever, led the way sorting out the tickets and meeting up with the children from Sentul and their minders. The rest of us followed on after picking up Aunty Doshi and others. Being Malaysia, the first order of the outing was food and photos. Then the fun began. Needless to say the kids set to with enthusiasm and commitment to have a good time. After watching and being involved in the first ride it was clear that they were far too organised for us Rotarians and we slunk off to try the Rollercoaster. This was the first mistake of the day! Doing a corkscrew spiral at 90 KPH and age do not go together well! All of us got off the death machine with varying degrees of disorientation and sensibly decided that the kids rides were more to our liking. (Watching them not going on them!). Lunch and session 2 followed in quick succession and before we knew what had happened it was time to go home. Out came the gifts and handshakes and everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves. The real challenge now being to tackle the traffic in a thunderstorm.

INDUCTION OF NEW MEMBER

Welcome Krishnan!
Last Saturday's meeting was a very busy one indeed. But no matter that we had Rotarian visitors from abroad and at home, the highlight was the induction of our new member Krishnan Samasalam, an engineer by profession who feels it is time he does something for our community. The fact that he has already volunteered to be a mentor for our REF speaks louder than his words. His Pres Ghaurry welcomes Krishnan sponsor Cecelia recognised his with his sponsor Cecelia qualities and introduced him to the club. Since then Krish has become a familiar sight at our meetings. We welcome him into our family without reservations.

The Assitant Governor assigned to oversee Group 7 next year, PP Andy, paid us a visit. He was accompanied by Rtn Steven from the same club. We wish to record their generosity during the fine session. HUMOUR - JIGSAW PUZZLE

One morning a guy calls his friend Joe and says, Please come over and help me. I have this killer jigsaw puzzle, and I cant figure out how to start it. Joe asks, What is it a puzzle of? The guy says, From the picture on the box, its a table setting. Well, Joe figures that hes pretty good at puzzles, so he heads over to the first guys house. The guy lets him in and shows him to where he has the puzzle spread all over the table. Joe studies the pieces for a moment, then studies the box. He then turns to the guy and says: First, no matter what I do, Im not going to be able to show you how to assemble these pieces to look like the picture of that tiger. Second, I suggest you relax, have a cup of coffee, and put all these Frosted Flakes back in the box.

This Week's Speaker

Speaker: Dave Arvan Topic: How to viral your cause on social media
Dave Arvan is ablogger on social issues. He will talk about MARAH (Malaysians against Rape, Assault and Snatch) Malaysia's first cyber NGO. We can learn from him the techniques to use to get a message viral on social media. Perhaps there is a way we can get our club's cause on the internet in a big way.

The Selangor SPCA - Six Pillars

by Helen Chan
Helen has worked part-time with the SPCA since 2010 after choosing early retirement to pursue her interests. Like most volunteers she has had to wash the premises, the animals and their feeding bowls! She now helps with fundraising for the shelter. Much of this involves attending events and educating the public for animal welfare as well. The SPCA naturally attends to cases of cruelty to animals. Those guilty of ill-treating the animals are brought to justice while the rescued animals are cared for at the shelter though the extreme cases are put down. Side-byside with this SPCA conducts humane education programmes for the public especially young students with group visits for the purpose. Students learn to care for the residents in the shelter as volunteers at SPCA. Helen then quoted some alarming statistics on the number of cases euthanized because of a lack of space at the shelter. The solution is to encourage sterilisation of strays. There is the happy example of how SPCA worked with Jaya 1 shopping mall to solve their problem of a burgeoning stray cat population through such a programme. Pet owners are similarly urged to do the same. Such an organisation as SPCA relies on public contributions. The public support is very necessary to sustain their efforts. We laud them and Helen for their valiant persistence.

Gillian Chong of Agape Vision

Last Saturday wehad a special visitor in the person of Gillian Chong daughter of a past president of a Rotary Club in Penang. Though not a Rotarian herself she has community service in her focus. She founded Agape Vision, a group of her cohort, dedicated to helping orphans and children in shelters realise their roles in society. We see the possibility of granting our Education Assistance Award to those among them who show potential. Young concerned citizens like Gillian are an inspiration to all of us.

DISASTER RELIEF HURRICANE SANDY RELIEF IN NEW YORK AND NEW JERSEY
Dear Friends throughout the Rotary world and beyond It has now been almost a week since Hurricane Sandy attacked New Jersey and New York. All of the six District Governors in the area whose Districts were most affected have been in contact with one another, and I would like to give you an update on what has happened to each of our areas, as well as a list of both immediate and long-term needs as we know them now. At Zones 24 and 322 s director Bryn Sykes suggestion, we are all working together to get donated supplies to the right area. We are asking that cash donations be made to one fund, the Walter D. head Foundation of Rotary District 7490, c/o DGN Calisto Bertin, Bertin Engineering, 66 Glen Avenue, Glen Rock, NJ 07452. Alternatively, credit card donations can be made online via PayPal (see below). We will split whatever donations are given among the six affected districts, although we may decide to give more to those districts that are most affected. That information will be on this website (created as part of a mufti-district PR grant from Rotary International). We will keep this site updated with the latest information every other day. We are overwhelmed by the generosity and support we have received from not only Rotarians but also from the general public. Today a group of dancing students is running a supplies drive, and will also be putting on a fund raising event. Hundreds of Rotary districts and clubs all over the world have called or e-mailed us to see how they could help. In general, most of the flood waters in the area have subsided, but a few areas still have no power. Mass transit is slowly returning to the area, and roads are being cleared. Many people, including Rotarians, lost their homes and businesses, and some even lost their lives. With the power still out, there is still danger from freezing. Many Rotary districts and clubs, as well as other organizations, are already on their way with donated supplies.
