Interpret figurative language, including similes and metaphors, in context. Lesson Objective:Students will be able to define simile, metaphor, and personification. Students will identify examples of similes, metaphors, and personification. Students will interpret figurative language, including similes and metaphors, in context.

A ctivating Strategy: Read poem: A Book Is Like


Discuss what the poet was comparing a book to. Remove the word like from the poem and ask the students if the comparisons remained the same, or did anything change. Give directions for clozestudents use the whiteboards to write down what word they would choose to complete the cloze, and choose an appropriate example (the choice should create an example of each type of figurative language).

Choose students to offer words that would correctly fill in the sentences. Facilitate discussion about why they chose that word.
