(Summary)
ith few exceptions, the period dealt with in this survey of Serbian art between 1690 and
1740 coincides with the period delimited with two Great Migrations of the Serbs: parallelly
with the momentous displacement of Orthodox Christian population from the territory of the
Ooman Empire to that of the Habsburg Empire, it aempts to trace the transition of Serbian art
from the Late Byzantine to the Central European cultural sphere. Since Serbian highest religious
dignitaries in this period also acted as political leaders to their body of believers, embodying both
religious and secular power, the defence of religious identity was identied with the struggle for
the survival of the nation. This is also the main reason why along with the diusion of Western
European inuences, artistic activities of the Serbs living in the territories of the Metropolitanate
of Sremski Karlovci (Karlowitz) and the Patriarchate of Pe were in the late 17th and the opening
decades of the 18th century marked by the persistence of a signicant residue of the Late Byzantine
tradition as the distinguishing mark of Orthodoxy. The process of gradual departure from medieval and adoption of modern artistic principles was determined by the place and time of creation
of a particular work of art, its commissioner, master or artistic workshop, by overall political, and
cultural conditions as well as by the situation in the Church, dominant, local, class or personal
artistic tastes, but was also related to the distance from the parent religious and political centres or
the proximity of heterodox environments.
Between the establishment of the provisional patriarchal see by patriarch Arsene III
arnojevi in Szentendre and the institution of Slavic, Greek and Latin grammar schools in Belgrade, Sremski Karlovci and Novi Sad, political struggle for the revival of the primary and the
establishment of an Orthodox secondary religious education system in the Metropolitanate of
Sremski Karlovci did not slacken it merely changed its form. Acquisition of books and the coming of teachers from Russia in the time of metropolitans Mojse Petrovi and Vientje Jovanovi,
accompanied by sending away of selected clergymen to Kiev to get high education, had paramount signicance for the reformation of both religious and secular life among the Serbs during
the 1720s and 1730s.
In their endeavours to carry out reforms of religious life modelled on those enacted in the
epoch of emperor Peter the Great in Russia among the Serbs living to the north of the Sava
and Danube rivers, Metropolitans of Belgrade and Sremski Karlovci had to make an essential
departure from them. Living in the empire of the most zealous Roman Catholic rulers, in which
Orthodox Christianity was a tolerated but not an ocial religion, the highest dignitaries of the
Serbian Orthodox Church had to omit those chapters of the principal legislative book of the Enlightenment in Russia Spiritual Regulations (Duhovnyi Reglament) by Theophan Prokopovich
referring to the emperor as the secular holder of the supreme church authority and the need

for an education in the native language of the people. It resulted in the restoration of the Kievan
movement advocating the absolutist theocracy, Orthodoxy and Panslavism among the Serbs in the
Habsburg Empire during the 1720s and 1730s, promulgated by metropolitan Peter Mogila some
hundred years before.
The adoption of decrees and ecclesiastical and monastic rules modelled aer the Russian Regulations and imposed by Metropolitans of Belgrade and Sremski Karlovci and the Serbian Patriarch between the two Great Migrations, went neither easily nor smoothly, and was accompanied
by great resistance among the Serbs in the Austrian Empire. Rigorous administrative measures
and the centralization of all religious, ecclesiastical and educational activities met the opposition
of both their civil participants and lower clergy. Apart from the decree granting privileged position to Ukrainian painters in future, famous Circular Leer of patriarch Arsene IV Jovanovi
akabenta of 1743, sent to ecclesiastical authorities in the Srem Diocese, reveals the awareness of
the popularity of local self-taught zoographers (painters) among common people. As an expression of the deepest concern of the highest ecclesiastical ocials in the Metropolitanate of Sremski
Karlovci for a particular eld of art, akabentas leer banning buying and selling of icons painted
by zoographers is the crucial testimony of the coexistence of Russication and rustication of the
cultural life.
The duality of conservative and modern concepts can be noticed in all the branches of art
among the Serbs living in the territories of the Ooman and Austrian Empires and the Venetian
Republic in the late 17th and the early decades of the 18th century.
Immediately following the Migration of 1690, alleging the granted privileges, the highest
Serbian ecclesiastical authorities, monks, well-o bourgeoisie and military aristocracy set to restoration of old and construction of new cathedral, town and monastery churches in Southern Hungary. Serbian churches found in the Pannonian region belonged either to the type of single-naved
Old Balkan cabin churches without dome or were built of solid material and modelled aer the
triconch structures typical of the Morava school or the churches of the Rascian type. Simultaneously with the construction of churches in traditional, post-Byzantine spirit, accommodation of
old Serbian church architecture to new building styles in the period following the Great Migration of 1690 was entrusted to German master-builders. As early as the second decade of the 18th
century, Serbian churches increased in length, width and height and they were beer illuminated.
An exonarthex and a masonry belfry surmounting an open portico were aached to the main
body of the church and the belfry was soon to house a chapel on its rst oor. Apart from the new
composition of the interior, elements of Central European Baroque architecture, to which Serbian
churches built in the territory of the Metropolitanate of Sremski Karlovci in the rst half of the
18th century apparently have close similarity, could also be noticed in the exterior of churches, i.e.
in their onion-shaped nials topping belfries, gables surmounting their entrances and decorative
articulation of their faades with simply proled pilasters and horizontal cornices.
In more prosperous monasteries, like those in Fruka Gora Mountain, conventual buildings
were restored immediately aer 1690 as two-storied structures: the upper stories, in accordance
with the Western tradition, had at ceilings, whereas the ground-oor was vaulted in an Oriental
fashion. Apart from conventual buildings, oriel-windows (doksati) shaped in Ooman fashion
could be seen on the Belgrade Metropolitan court and Episcopal court in Valjevo. Two building
styles can be distinguished in the structure of the Belgrade Metropolitan court. However, they
were not applied to dierent levels of the building, but with respect to importance of the rooms
(those used for more solemn purposes were built in Western style and decorated in stucco). Minor architectural structures in monasteries and courts in the territory of the Metropolitanate of

Belgrade and Sremski Karlovci were built by local masons. Only few names of these masons have
come down to us.
Single-naved uskok or heyduck (hajduk) churches with tall steeples aached to their west
faades in Northern Dalmatia, or with specic, simple bell-gables in Old Herzegovina, are also
works of unknown local masons and stone-cuers. Architectural elements characteristic for this
group of Orthodox Christian churches are in essence no dierent from those typical of the coastal
or Mediterranean type of post-Byzantine architecture.
Unlike Serbian religious objects built in the late 17th and early 18th centuries, which, depending on the region, reect the tendency to preserve architectural features of earlier epochs, secular
buildings erected in Belgrade during the Austrian occupation of Serbia (17181739) show all the
characteristics of German military Baroque architecture. Since the most representative edice of
the Austrian capital of the Kingdom of Serbia the barracks of governor Alexander of Wrtemberg has not been preserved, the gates of the Kalemegdan fortress, and, above all, the Triumphal
Gate of emperor Charles VI are the most signicant testimonies of Baroque architecture in Belgrade at that time.
It was as late as the fourth decade of the 18th century that a resort to old artistic tendencies,
accompanied with the adoption of more recent ones, could be noticed in Serbian mural painting.
Restorations of old ensembles and decoration of newly built churches were undertaken only aer
the stabilization of overall political situation in the period of Austrian rule, which, apart from
the territory of Southern Hungary, also embraced Northern Serbia, Banat and Lesser Walachia. A
dozen mural ensembles dispersed over a the wide area between the monastery of Chilandar to
the south and iklo to the north, dating from the period between 1718 and 1740 were painted by
Vlach, Graeco-Tzintzar and Serbian travelling zoographers companies engaged by high ecclesiastical dignitaries of the Metropolitanate of Belgrade and Sremski Karlovci, abbots and well-o ktetors
and donors found among ordinary citizens.
Revived interest for fresco decoration among the Serbs in the 1730s is closely related to the
diusion of uninterrupted painting traditions from the neighbouring Orthodox Christian regions.
Namely, these are the decadent Walachian Brncoveanu style and two reformist streams originating in the southern regions of the Balkans: one conservative or monastic, diusing from the Mount
of Athos, and the other more modern, Italianizing, spreading from Ionian islands, embodied in
zoographers and authors of treatises on painting Dionysios of Fourna and Panaghiotis Doxaras.
However, neither the chief advocate of the revival of classical values of the Byzantine tradition,
monk-zoographer Dionysios, nor the circle of painters including Vlachs, Greeks and Serbs gathered around the court of Walachian prince Constantine Brncoveanu, inheritor and restorer of
the famous Byzantine culture, could resist the splendour of European Baroque art. Nor the work
of the followers of David from Selenica and painters company of Andrea Andrejevi Junior, who
decorated the monastery churches of Draa (1735) and Vraevnica (1737) respectively, as late but
direct osprings of the late 17th and early 18th-century South Balkan monastic and Walachian court
zoographers schools, were devoid of elements of Western European Baroque. These two katholicons at a distance of no more than a few dozens of kilometres, decorated within a few years span,
act as convincing testimonies of crucial dierences between the tastes and aspirations of members
of well-o secular and high ecclesiastical classes as commissioners in the late years of the Austrian
rule in Serbia.
The third great fresco ensemble from that period that in the church of the Bodjani monastery (17351737) was painted simultaneously with the decoration of the interiors of Draa and
Vraevnica, done by Greek and Vlacho-Serbian painters, and is a work of Hristofor efarovi,

trained in South Balkan hinterlands where he also became a follower of the artistic orientation of
Panaghiotis Doxaras. efarovi combined thorough knowledge of post-Byzantine iconography
acquired in a Levantine school of painting with hints of new Western artistic tendencies, introducing into religious compositions echoes of everyday urban life. Although modelled aer the
rules of traditional zoographers painting, the frescoes from Bodjani were essentially dierent from
anything seen before; on the other hand, they looked so familiar. Since it was dicult to aune
Western narrative cycles to the interior of only partly reformed Serbian churches in the rst half
of the 18th century, further development of the New Age Serbian Art beginning with Bodjani
meant a radical Baroquisation of both religious mural paintings and the architectural concept of
the church.
Along with paintings of self-trained zoographers who worked in village and parish churches in
the territories of the Patriarchate of Pe and the Metropolitanate of Sremski Karlovci in the late 17th
and the opening decades of the 18th century, icons of Russian provincial painters and travelling
Graeco-Tzintzar zoographers were also highly esteemed. Icon painting among the Serbs in this period, marked by a retarded Late Byzantine style, was by no means puritanically conventional: obliterated or uncommon details and variances accompanied with entirely new iconographic themes
reect the inuence of post-Tridentine reforms carried out in the Roman Catholic world, of adopted Uniate forms or Orthodox reactions against them. In the territories populated by Serbs between
the two Great Migrations, icons painted by Russo-Ukrainian or Graeco-Tzintzar zoographers were
either brought by travelling merchants, as souvenirs from pilgrimages, or were commissioned by
Serbian ecclesiastical church dignitaries. Apart from the work of mostly anonymous zoographers
or those known only by regions or city workshops in which they were working, opuses of Russian
(Grigorii Gerasimov), Greek (zoographer Mitrophanes, Dimitri Ianaki, Spyridon Livanon, Constantin Dimitriu) and Serbian (Ostoja Mrkojevi, Savate Krabule, Kozma Damjanovi, Radul Lazarevi, Rafail Dimitrevi, Rafail Miloradovi, Silvestar Popovi, Maksim Tujkovi, Stanoje Popovi,
George Stojanovi, Nedeljko Popovi, George Ranite) icon painters known by name have come
down to us from the period preceding the arrival of Jov Vasilevi to Sremski Karlovci and his appointment as the ocial court painter of patriarch Arsene IV Jovanovi akabenta.
Analogies of the iconographic scheme according to which the Holy Trinity is represented
as three-headed Christ can be found in Serbian and Byzantine medieval painting, as well as in
works dating from the period of Ooman rule. However, Christ depicted as King of Kings with
triple crown shaped as the papal tiara had not been seen before. The fact that all the icons of this
type were made in the border areas of the Habsburg Empire populated by Serbs is a convincing
evidence of the need for self-armation through explicit denial of Roman Catholic doctrine on
papal primacy.
Icons reecting extraordinary admiration, glorication of and trust in the Holy Virgin as virtuous patron and inveterate wonder-worker appeared among the Serbs in the opening decades of
the 18th century as unambiguous signs of the rise of the Western Marian religiosity in the Baroque
period. Representations of Our Lady of Seven Sorrows and the Holy Queen as Rose that would never
wither are just two examples in the series of new iconographic schemes.
Instead of earlier hagiographic icons (depicting the life of a saint in a series of scenes), more
common forms in the late 17th and the early decades of the 18th century include standing or siing
gures of saints, as well as equestrian gures of Holy Warriors. Characteristic features of the icons
from that period are concise depictions of several hagiographic episodes within the same composition, grouping of standing saints gures (two or more), the most prominent place among which
was occupied by canonised Serbian advocates of Eastern Orthodoxy St Sava and St Simeon in

the rst place. It was in the same period that the Annunciation as an undivided composition transformed from a post Byzantine icon to a Baroque painting, whereas the insertion of a zone with depictions of the Great Feasts was a signicant contribution to the Baroquisation of the iconostasis.
New life of Serbian miniature painting was also rooted in traditional post-Byzantine culture.
Favourite motifs of miniature painters of the 16th century Kratovo School were taken over and
elaborated by the most talented painters from Raa on the Drina River (Hristofor and Kiprijan), who paved the way for their followers in the Danube basin (Jerotej and Gavril StefanoviVenclovi). Kiprans and Venclovis banners and miniatures, as well as manuscripts illustrated
by Lazar Bugarin and Haji Gavrilo Tadi in the monastery of itomisli and Sarajevo are the most
illustrative examples of the fusion between the art of illumination and skills preserved in the period of Ooman rule and books printed in Kiev, Moscow and Lvov. The greatest dierence between
miniatures painted almost simultaneously in Hungary and Bosnia and Herzegovina rests upon
radically dierent approaches to space and colour: in manuscripts from Bosnia and Herzegovina
illuminations run across whole pages, they are devoid of horror vacui and show the use of gold and
silver paints. With full appreciation of the role of organized copying activity of scribes from Raa
and their followers, it must be pointed out that calligraphic skills of their counterparts living in
minor cultural centres in the territory of the Ooman Empire also deserve aention. Dierences
that can be noticed in their illuminations by no means obscure recognizability of common artistic
and iconographic features within the same, Serbian ethnic territory.
In the period following the First Great Migration of the Serbs (1690), Serbian patriarchs and
Metropolitans of Sremski Karlovci commissioned prints for their altar cloths and indulgences
from anonymous or lesser-known Viennese engravers. The awareness of practical propagandistic
eects of multiplied copper plates took an unprecedented form in a print showing the monastery
of Studenica, heraldic devices of Serbian lands, the Genealogical Tree of the Nemanji Family
and St Sava with the saints from the Nemanji Family, commissioned by patriarch Arsene IV
Jovanovi akabenta as early as 1733. It is from this source that subsequently realized idea on
the publishing of efarovi-Messmers Stemmatographia (1741), an illustrated nationally-political
declaration of continuity and legitimacy of unied ecclesiastical and secular powers embodied in
the then Patriarch of Pe, sprang.
Simultaneously with the production of politically inspired copper plates, in quiet monastic
cells monks were making woodcuts with a single aim: to sell them or to give them away in order
to ensure livelihood for the monastic community and to stimulate pilgrimage and alms-giving
among their believers. Through such a humble and reticent life Stefan Liki, priest from Orahovica, as well as anonymous monks from Mt Athos and Ravanica merited eternal memory.
In the Serbian art between 1690 and 1740, departure from tradition was accompanied with
the preservation of lasting values of indigenous artistic heritage and its incorporation into new,
Europeanized styles. Owing to German master-builders, Viennese engravers and Russian printed
books, exteriors of Serbian religious buildings, prints and hand-wrien and painted liturgical
books were the rst to acquire Baroque forms in this period. The interiors of Serbian churches
were auned to their Europeanized exteriors as late as the 1730s, when among authors of mural
decoration prevailed members of the best workshops from the neighbouring Orthodox Christian
regions, whereas manufacturing and decoration of iconostases and mobiliary were taken over by
beer trained Serbian zoographers and skilled artisans. Metropolitan residences in Belgrade and
Sremski Karlovci were built simultaneously with the erection of the Triumphal Gate of Charles
VI. Cathedral church in Belgrade, churches in Buda, Vukovar and Valjevo, as well as belfries in the
monasteries of Manasa, Velika Remeta, Jazak, Rakovac and Grabovac increased in height. Fres-

coes from the monastery churches, narthexes and chapels in Draa, Manasa, Vojlovica, Ravanica,
Vraevnica, Bodjani and Chilandar date from the same period. While George Stojanovi was
painting the iconostasis for the church of the Nativity of St John the Baptist in Belgrade, priest Stefan Liki made a woodcut depicting its patron saint, whereas Gavril Stefanovi-Venclovi wrote
and painted the Miscellany.
Diversity of artistic tendencies and disbalanced development of dierent branches of art
among the Serbs between 1690 and 1740 clearly indicate that we are dealing with a proto-Baroque
stylistic period witnessing the creation of conditions for a somewhat calmer and more coherent
artistic period known as the Early Serbian Baroque. It is marked by a specic intertwining of entirely dierent artistic tendencies whose more traditional forms, though slightly transformed, will
remain popular among the Serbs, side by side with the ocial art until the early decades of the
19th century.
