International Relations Virtual Guide for Foreign Exchange Students

Appreciated Student: Welcome to our virtual guide, designed to offer information for those who intend to complete one or two semesters of exchange with the University of Medellin. Likewise, you will find that this guide may be of use to any student who intends to enroll in an academic program at our institution. Here you will be able to find information about our university, its services, academic programs, and cultural and athletic activities, all which allow students to enjoy a well-rounded academic environment. You will also find instructions about the enrollment process, tuition, housing, video testimonials from past foreign exchange students, and a variety of information regarding tourism in Colombia. With this wide range of information, you will not only learn everything you need to know to become part of the community of the University of Medellin, but to also become immersed in the city and country. CONTENTS 1. University of Medellin


Our university is located in the southwest of Medellin, the second biggest city in Colombia. The city is distinguished for its beautiful landscape and warm and happy people, and its hospitable atmosphere has charmed visitors worldwide. Upon entering the campus, the visitor will be not only be impressed by the architecture of the university, but also by its lush lawns and abundant greenery which form the backdrop of the university buildings.

1.1 History of the University


The University of Medellin was founded in 1950 by a group of 76 Antioquian intellectuals who wanted to create an academic environment free of all political, religious, social, and racial distinctions. Today, about 12,000 students are enrolled and we actively promote their incorporation in the world as young professionals who will someday contribute to solving key problems in their respective fields of study. We offer students a superior higher education through academic excellence, a strong culture of research, and a firm emphasis on social responsibility with the intention of contributing to the regional and national development of Colombia in an international context. Currently, the university is the only Institution of Higher Education which has received the Certificate of Social Responsibility awarded by the organization Fenalco Solidario. It has also received the certification of quality ISO 9001:2008, making it a part of a select group of 22 credited national universities that maintain high standards of educational quality.

1.2 Academic Programs


The Univeristy of Medellin offers the following academic programs: Bachelor degrees in four key areas: Economic administration, Law, Communication, and Engineering Specialization program (one year postgraduate program) Masters program in a variety of areas Doctorates in Law and Engineering

1.3 Human Development and Community Wellness:


The University of Medellin promotes the well-being of its university members in the areas of sports, artistic and cultural development, healthcare, and career planning through a wide range of recreational programs, informational sessions, and personalized opportunities to seek personal and preventative care.

We offer the community a variety of activities at diverse hours that enhance their quality of life and develop their personal potential. Using the multiple facilities and academic spaces on campus to carry out these activities, the university ensures that its members receive a well rounded education. Every semester the university plans a month-long program consisting of a number of activities and workshops designed to help community members maintain their well-being. The intention of the program is to promote wellness in all facets of community members lives, in order to ensure their happiness not only with themselves, but with the institution and society at large. .

1.4 Language Center


The Language Center promotes the learning of second languages through different courses and levels in English, Chinese (Mandarin), Italian, and Portuguese. Furthermore, it offers Spanish for Foreigners, a new academic program with high academic standards designed for foreign residents in Colombia and to the international community in general, with the intention of offering a dynamic learning environment in order to perfect students communicative abilities in Spanish.

3. Governmental Processes
3.1 Visa: Foreign students who study at the University must obtain a temporary visa from the Colombian embassy or consulate closest to their place of residence before arriving to Colombia. The visa may be in process when the student receives acceptance from the university. The admitted must contact the embassy or consulate for the application requirements and necessary costs of the visa as well as its expected date of delivery. You can find information regarding the requirements, costs, and places where you can solicit your visa here. 3.2 Cdula de Extranjera: All foreign students have a period of fifteen days after arriving to Colombia in which they must present themselves at the office of Migracin Colombia located at Calle 19 #80A-40, Barrio Beln la Nubia, Tel. (574) 562 2903 Lineal national: 018000957777. Hours of assistance: Monday to Friday from 08:00 a.m. to 04:00 p.m. At this office students will register their visa and begin the process for their cdula de extranjera, a document that is required for stays in the country longer than (3) three months. Students will be required to bring the following in order to obtain their cedula: Formato nico de Trmites M4F5 completed correctly: here Original Passport 2 copies of the biographical information of passport 2 copies of the temporary visa of student 3 photos measuring 3x4cm on blue background 2 copies of approved document that states blood type Fee of Col$149,650.00 (approximately 55 or U$80) paid under the name of Fondo Rotatorio DAS No. 05699020-3 -Cdigo 101 in any branch of Banco Davivienda. We suggest the branch in Centro Comercial Los Molinos: Calle 30A # 82A-26 Local 1009 Original receipt of payment as well as two additional copies

Health Insurance

Every student must obtain international health insurance that covers medical assistance in the case of illness or accident in Colombia. Obtaining this insurance is required for all students in order to be accepted into an exchange program. Students will have to contact a company that offers this service in their respective country in order to identify the best option according to their needs.

4 Housing
The University of Medellin does not offer student housing to its foreign students. However, we provide our students with the mentoring and help necessary in order to acquire temporary housing in the houses or apartments of currently enrolled students. This is made possible through our program At Home (content 4.1), comprised of a group of university students who are eager to receive foreign students and welcome them to Medellin. Through this program, students are not only

able to share lodgings with fellow university students they also gain a unique opportunity to exchange intercultural experiences on a day to day basis. For the first few days in Medellin we recommend that students find housing in a hostal. In what follows, you will find a list of some of the most well-known hostals in the city. 4.1 At Home Group


At Home is a group comprised of students and teachers at the University of Medellin that work towards the internalization and promotion of relations with universities around the world. The program formed as a result of the willingness of our academic community to provide foreign students and teachers the opportunity to stay with community members for determined periods of

times, ranging from a few days up to various months, depending on economic and personal needs and preferences. In this way, foreign students have been able to improve their level of Spanish in a native environment, make new friends, and amaarse, or settle in, to our University, meanwhile enjoying the city of Medellin and other touristic sites of Colombia. The program benefits native students as well as foreign students alike, as the program facilitates an intimate process of cultural and linguistic exchange that ultimately results in an easy acclimation process. Members of At Home also provide other services such as: Picking up from the airport Accompaniment during the process of solicitation of Cdula de Extranjera Accompaniment in the opening of bank accounts Help in buying cell phone Help in finding housing, in the cases in which it is necessary Advice regarding touristic activities and entertainment

Furthermore, the group plans to organize academic and cultural events, consisting of touristic visits and ecological outings designed to allow foreign exchange students get to know more of the city and its surrounding areas.

4. Financing Your Exchange Program


4.1 Free Exchange Program

Would you like to travel to Colombia? As a foreign exchange student, you will be able to take advantage of the academic programs at the University of Medellin for free. The university invites all foreign exchange students to come to the University of Medellin and live in Colombia free of tuition. Exchange students may study at the university for free for up to two semesters. Why do we offer free exchange programs at our university? As one of 22 accredited universities in Colombia we see ourselves as an emerging international institution that would like to project itself to the world. We seek to increase the number of foreign exchange students who visit our university in order to strengthen our process of internationalization and foster an international academic community, as well as offer visiting students intercultural opportunities that will later benefit them in their personal and professional lives. Likewise, we are interested in creating new connections and alliances in order to expand our academic network in the world, in order to offer our students the opportunity to study abroad and experience the multiple benefits of intercultural exchange. We only offer free admission to foreign students who do not exceed (2) two semesters of study. Foreign students who are interested in completing a full academic program at the University must pay the full costs of the program desired.

4.2 Scholarship Opportunities


DAAD (Germany): DAAD offers partial and complete scholarships for international pregraduate and postgraduate study, as well as internships for both Germans citizens and citizens abroad. In order to apply for a scholarship with DAAD, the interested applicant must first obtain acceptance from the University of Medellin as an exchange student or as a student of a complete program. For more information regarding the scholarships DAAD offers and the accompanying requirements, please access the website of DAAD.

ICETEX (Colombia): ICETEX is a state governmental organization of that promotes scholarships for foreigners, especially for postgraduate programs in Colombian universities, with the intention of promoting Colombia as an international place for higher education. The entity also promotes the exchange of qualified Colombian citizens who wish to study abroad. For information regarding the dates of application, requirements, and more, click here.

Fulbright (USA): Fulbright is an educational exchange program offered by the government of the United States. It annually awards close to 6,000 scholarships to U.S. citizens as well as foreign citizens alike, making it one of the largest and most diverse programs of its kind. In the United States, Fulbright scholarships are offered yearly in order to give students, professors, artists, and various other professionals the opportunity to teach at international universities, complete post-graduate study, and undertake research projects in one of over 140 countries that participate in the program, of which Colombia is included. The scholarships, which are awarded through an open application process, are based on the academic merits and leadership capacities of applicant. 1. It is one of 22 accredited universities in Colombia The University of Medellin is one of 22 universities that has received its institutional accreditation through the Ministry of National Education through the resolution 5148 of August 3, 2009, due to its high levels of quality and excellence.

Students are able to live with a Colombian family during their stay Through our new program At Home, students are able to stay in the house or apartment of one of our students, allowing them to intimately get to know Colombian culture from a natives perspective, make new friends, and rapidly adapt to Colombian society. Sharing day-to-day experiences and facilitating cultural exchange are the greatest advantages of this program, as well as the favorable costs or possible exemption from pay depending on each students housing agreement.

5. The University of Medellin boasts an international character while still retaining its unique Colombian charm The university has over 50 connections with universities worldwide, allowing it to receive students from different counties as well as send native students abroad every semester. In our Language Center, we offer foreign languages such as English, Chinese (Mandarin), Italian, and Portuguese. At the same time, we offer Spanish courses for foreigners in three distinct levels that are tailored to the needs and proficiency of the student enrolled. We also carry out intercultural programs such as Jornada por Pases y Mundos (International Fair) and Una Mirada al Mundo, (A Look at the World) which allow students to enjoy international cooking workshops, movie showings, conferences, and artistic expositions aimed at increasing awareness of other cultures and promoting interaction with them. The University has not developed a community of foreigners due to its low number of foreign students, making it impossible for the exchange student to separate himself from Colombian culture and Spanish language. Because of this, foreign exchange students will be able to make Colombian friends rapidly as well as advance their Spanish, and get to know el argot paisa (slang), all of which will allow the student to experience the university a la colombiana. However, even though there are not many foreign students in our university, foreign students will nonetheless have the opportunity to meet people from all over the world in the city of Medellin.

8. Reasons to Visit Medellin


1. Medelln, City of Eternal Spring In Medelln you will enjoy an average temperature of 18 to 28 degrees Celsius throughout the year. Everyday visitors will be able to enjoy the sunny climate as well as its soft breezes that travel across

the entire city. This pleasant valley climate is due to the citys location between the mountain ranges of the Andes. Not even the cold rains of the wet months take away from the warmth that distinguishes the city. The mix of rain and sun allows the citys native flowers to bloom and show off their beautiful colors 365 days of the year, making Medellins climate a year-round pleasure. The pleasant combination of temperature, colors, winds, flowers, and the breathtaking location between mountains earns Medellin its famous title as the City of Eternal Spring. 2. La Feria de las Flores Every year, during the first days of August, the famous Feria de las Flores takes place in Medellin, accompanied by sunny days and a climate that honors the phrase En Medelln, es Primavera. The streets and parks not only fill with flowers, but also with blissful travelers from all over the country and world. La Feria de las Flores lasts about ten days and offers its visitors a variety of events that cater to all tastes, including: Desfile de Silleteros (Parade of Silleteros, the most prominent event), Feria Nacional Equina (National Equine Fair), Festival de Orquestas (Orchesta Festival), Festival Nacional de la Trova (National Festival of Poetry/Verse), Humorcity (Comedy Festival), Festival del Recuerdo y de la Cancin Popular (Festival of Tradition and Folk Songs), Concurso de Mujeres Talento (Beauty Pageant), Campeonato Nacional de Sonido sobre Ruedas (National Competition of Sound Over Wheels), Desfile de Carros Clsicos y Antiguos (Parade of Antique Cars), Caminata Canina (Dog Walk), musical and cultural events, procession of colorful buses and flowers, as well as others. During the festival, the whole city blossoms and the happiness of the people fills it with happiness and excitement. Furthermore, the parties that take place in the dance clubs during the festival are unforgettable. If youd like to experience a night of music, dance, good company, and great drinks, you must visit Medellin during the festival of the flowers. 3. Tourist Attractions Medellin is a city that offers its visitors and locals a variety of touristic attractions and entertainment opportunities that satisfy all tastes and interests. For example, one is able to enjoy its diverse parks and wide plazas, as well as immerse oneself in its expansive world of regional, national, and international art in the citys many museums, theaters, or libraries. We recommend that you visit the Centro Administrativo la Alpujarra, one of the buildings that form part of the cultural heritage of the city. At nightfall, prepare yourself for an unforgettable night in the city, as you will be able to please the palate with an exceptional dinner from one of the many restaurants that boast regional food and international food alike. 4. Outside the city of Medellin Outside the city of Medellin you will have the opportunity to experience the climate of eternal spring against the backdrop of lush rolling hills and clear skies, thanks to the citys geographical location between the Andes. Delight yourself with the enchanting colonial towns of Antioquia such as Santa Fe de Antioquia, Guatap, Jeric, El Jardn, La Ceja, San Pedro de los Milagros, Ciudad Bolvar, among others. You will be able to enjoy Antioquian culture and experience rural lifestyle through the smells, parties, colors, foods, and abundant folklore that fill the towns. Distinguished for its rich tradition, rural Antioquia is

characterized for the warmth of its friendly inhabitants who always welcome their visitors. Here you will be able to breathe fresh air and enjoy the evergreen nature, while participating in a number of activities. You will be able to horseback-ride against awe-inspiring landscapes as well as partake in a variety of extreme sports in the mountains and rivers. The department of Antioquia offers many opportunities in agritourism, such as visits and lodgings in traditional country estates where sugar and milk are produced, as well as opportunities to visit flower production areas. Visitors can also enjoy a wide range of ecotourism activities, including fishing, nature hikes, guided ecological tours, and bird watching, all which allow the visitor to enjoy the fresh Antioquian air and the great biodiversity of this region of the country. 5. Colombias People Colombia is known for the friendliness of its people, but especially for the warmth and happiness of its paisas, a name given to the inhabitants of Antioquia, the Eje Cafetero (Coffee zone) and particularly, the inhabitants of Medellin. According to the Happy Planet Index, Colombia is the second happiest country in the world after the Replublic of Vanuatu. The Happy Planet Index reflects human well-being as it is associated with ecological efficiency and life-long expectancy, as these indicate general life happiness. Paisas are famous for being great hosts, something which they demonstrated in 2011 during the Fifa U-20 World Cup, which took place in Medellin as well as other cities in Colombia. Thus, completing an exchange program at University of Medelln will allow students the unforgettable experience of meeting some of the happiest people in the world as well as Colombias greatest hosts.

On the other hand, tourism on a worldwide scale decreased by 4% in the same period. But what is it that makes Colombia such a unique tourist destination that every year attracts more and more tourists from all over the world? We would like to invite you to take a brief virtual tour of the countrys regions so that you can further understand why Colombia is a wonderful place to visit. Important Cities in Colombia: Amazonas


The small and enchanting city of Leticia offers a number of opportunities to discover the rainforest as it is located in the Amazons triangle that comprises the three borders of Colombia, Peru, and Brazil. Get to know the indigenous community and their rich culture and traditions, which have been conserved up to this day. You can also visit the famous national parks such as Amacayacu and observe the wildlife that consists of a variety of exotic birds and a multitude of primates. This part of Colombia also offers the visitor the opportunity to observe the herds of pink dolphins that inhabit the Amazon River. Encountering these exotic mammals is an experience that you wouldnt easily forget. Discovering the virgin forest with a private guide and letting yourself fall in love with the stories and legends of the Amazon forest, among other activities, are what make the Amazon forest such a unique tourist attraction.

Bogot - Cundinamarca
Bogot is the capital of Colombia and one of the most important cities of South America. Its population is comprised of approximately 8 million inhabitants, many of which are from within the country as well as around the world. This mixture of people has given the city its urban culture and its international charm, earning it its nickname as metropolis. In Bogota, one encounters a plethora of Colombian history against a backdrop of modernity.

Enjoy the historic center and bear witness to the colonial period that formed the origins of modernday Colombia. In only a few metros from the center, you can see the stark contrast of the modern buildings in the international center of Bogot. The capital is also known as the cultural center of the country, replete with numerous museums, art galleries, theatres, cinemas, and more. The city is also host to a number of internationally-known events such as Festival of Parks, Book Fair, and the Festival of Theatre. Furthermore, the capital attracts tourists every year with its famous Museum of Gold and Plaza Bolivar. One can also ride the metro cable 3,200 meters high in order to reach Montserrat Hill where the incredible view of the capital is sure to take ones breath away.

There is no better way to end ones day in the capital but to delight the palate with flavors from all over the world, as Bogota offers a wide variety of restaurants that boast worldwide cuisine. Afterwards one is able to enjoy a delicious cocktail from one of the citys many bars while enjoying Latin rhythms. Experiencing a warm Colombian night in the Red Zone of the city of Bogota is sure to live up to the expectations of even the most fickle traveler.

Capurgan Choc
A true paradise on the Colombian Caribbean coast, Capurgan is located in the department of Choc, near the border with Panama. It is surrounded by a tropical forest full of exotic wildlife and flower, and is characterized by the pristine beaches and island peacefulness that captivates all of its visitors. If you are looking for a place to relax and enjoy the Caribbean waters, Capurgan is your destination. Here you can go on ecological hikes in the forest as well as participate in aquatic sports that will allow you to discover the diverse marine life. In Capurgan, one will be able to get to know the coral reefs, dolphins, turtles, and various other species of marine life that fill the beautiful waters of the Caribbean.

On the hike towards Sapzurro Bay, a magnificent beach with sailboats that transport tourists to the beautiful islands of San Blas, Panama, one passes a tropical forest full of high trees, birds, and primates. From Sapzurro it is only a 20 minute walk to La Miel, a town in Panama that is ideal both for snorkeling and observing a variety of fish and coral due to its crystal clear waters. Experience the relaxation of the beach and the breeze and delight the palate with fresh shrimp, lobster prepared with garlic, and coco rice by the edges of the Caribbean Sea. In Capurgan, you will find a true Caribbean paradise.

Cartagena - Bolvar
Cartagena de Indias, discovered in 1501 and declared in 1985 a World Heritage site by UNESCO, is one of the most visited tourist destinations in Colombia. Located on the Caribbean Coast, it has retained its colonial charm and continues to stun its visitors to this day. In the Old City, one is able to find the great fortress that was conserved from the period of the Conquista, and relive the historic past while simultaneously enjoying the view of the Caribbean Sea. A trip to Cartagena de Indias is a pleasure for all its visitors, no matter what their age or taste, for the multitude of activities that the city offers. Beyond the beautiful Old City, Cartagena is home to a number of beaches, cafes, restaurants, and boutiques where visitors may buy everything from clothing to jewels. Visitors also have the opportunity to visit a number of ecological wonders such as the Islands of Rosario or the Volcano of Totumo. If ones plan is just to relax, one can also delight in the citys beaches with a freshly-made tropical juice (a true Colombian delicacy!) and enjoy the soft waves of the Caribbean Sea.

Eje Cafetero
Also known as the Triangle of caf, the Coffee Zone is considered the number one rural touristic destination in Latin America. The territory extends through the departments of Caldas, Quindo, and Risaralda. With its astounding nature, warm people, and distinction as the best coffee growing region in the world, the territory never ceases to amaze its visitors. The triangle of caf offers its visitors a great number of attractions: 3 national parks, including the famous Valle de Cocora, the inviting hot springs, the theme parks, golf fields, a variety of extreme sports, and coffee plantations where guided tours are offered to visitors who want to learn how Colombian coffee is produced. After having visited the plantations, all one has to do is sit down to a cup of Colombian coffee to confirm that it is indeed some of the best in the world. Visitors can also stay the night in traditional country estates surrounded by beautiful landscapes and enjoy great company of Colombians and fellow travelers alike.

Isla de San Andrs


The island of San Andrs is located at about 700 kilometers from the continental coast of Colombia and forms a part of the cluster of islands of San Andres, Providencia, and Santa Catalina, which are situated near the coasts of Central America. In 2000, this group of islands was declared the Seaflower Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO. The island of San Andres is characterized by its beautiful beaches and its white sand and coral, as well as its sea of seven colors. The island boasts a unique culture due to its colonial history in which the Dutch, the British, the Spanish, and African slaves lived simultaneously on the island. This colonial history is today reflected in the islands music, food, dance, and Creole language. San Andres distinct culture is referred to as Raizal and gives the island its unique charm. Here, the time passes slowly and the people carry out a calm and relaxing life a true island lifestyle.

Beyond being an eco-touristic paradise, San Andres also offers visitors the opportunity to participate in aquatic sports such as windsurfing, kite surfing, kayaking, and others. However, the number one aquatic sport is scuba diving, due to the fact that San Andres is home to the biggest coral reefs of all Colombia. The various scuba diving schools on the island offer visitors the chance to enjoy the diverse marine life of San Andres, one which consists of approximately 270 species of fishes.

La Guajira
The department of La Guajira is located in the very north of the country. It is a desert region where one is able to observe in the horizon the famous phenomenon Fata Morgana (mirage) which is also famous in Africas Sahara Desert. La Guajira is home to the indigenous Wayuu as well as two other indigenous groups known as the Kogui y Wiwa. The regions most spectacular facets are its sand dunes and beautiful desert landscapes, its solitary beaches, and the Caribbean Sea. Visitors often take guided tours through the desert in order to fully take advantage of La Guajiras magic and beauty.

The Cabo de la Vela is inhabited by Wayuu families that offer lodgings and meals in their houses, known as Rancheras. The solitariness of the cape as well as the spectacular Caribbean Sea make it a must-see destination. We also recommend a guided tour to Punta Gallina, located in the very North of the department. Surrounded by massive sand dunes, mangrove swamps, and beaches, Punta Gallina possesses a magic of its own and is guaranteed to make an everlasting impression on its visitors. On top of all this, La Guajira offers its visitors a number of tourist attractions, including the National Park of Serrana de Macuira, different festivals and the Sanctuary of Wildlife Los Flamencos.

Medelln Antioquia
Medelln, also known as the city of eternal spring, offers a pleasant and temperate climate year round. The city offers a number of recreational activities and touristic attractions, all of which satisfy different tastes. Enjoy the various parks and plazas or connect with the world of art. Get to know the cultural highlights of Medellin by visiting the theatres and libraries. We recommend that you visit El Centro Administrativo La Alpujarra, one of the buildings that form part of the history of the city. At night, prepare yourself for Medellins unforgettable nightlife. Delight the palate with a delicious dinner in one of the many restaurants of the city that offer regional cuisine as well as international plates. After all of this, celebrate the weekend at a dance club where you may enjoy not only Latin rhythms, but music from all over the world. Upon leaving Medellin, the visitor will be able to get to know the charm of colonial Antioquian towns such as Santa Fe de Antioquia, Guatap, Jeric, Jardn, La Ceja, San Pedro de los Milagros, Rionegro, and others. One is able to enjoy the Antioquian culture and experience the life of the farm through its many smells, colors, parties, meals, and folklore. Antioquia is a land that retains many of its traditions and is known for its warm people, who are always friendly and ready to welcome foreign visitors. Here one is able to breathe the fresh and pure air and enjoy an evergreen nature, while taking advantage of the tourist attractions that the region offers.

Nuqu - Choc
Nuqui is a small town located in Colombias Pacific Coast and is known for its beaches that are surrounded by rainforest. Here you can observe the giant whales that pass in the summer months through the Chocoan coast. You can also enjoy the Pacific Oceans temperate waves and relax in the nearly desolate beaches. In the tropical forest, you will be able to disconnect from society as all that can be heard is birdsong and the sounds of nature. To experience an unforgettable adventure you can explore the ocean and get to know the incredible fish such as the Whale Shark, or visit the National Park Ensenada de Utra, where the marine wildlife as well as the expansive rainforest captures the hearts of all nature lovers and ecological tourists.

San Gil Santander

San Gil and its surroundings have become the main destination for adventure tourism in Colombia. Here one is able to partake in extreme sports such as espeleologa (cave diving), torrentismo (canyoning), rafting, parasailing and ecological hiking. Various sites of attraction around San Gil offer the opportunity to practice these sports, such as in the canyon of Chicamocha for paragliding, the waterfall Juan de Curi for torrentismo, and various rivers for rafting. Furthermore, San Gil is known for its charming town with its beautiful plaza, its happy people and busy open markets where vendors sell tropical fruits and typical Colombian sweets, allowing tourists to enjoy an authentic Colombian scene.

Santa Marta Magdalena


Santa Marta, the oldest city in the continent of South America, is located in the department Magdalena. Due to its location by the Caribbean Sea and its proximity to many famous natural sites, Santa Marta is one of the most visited places in Colombia by natives and foreigners alike. The city offers a wide range of tourist activities. One of the most visited sites is the estate la Quinta de San Pedro Alejandrino, where the countrys founding father Simn Bolvar died. Visitors are able to learn about the legacy of the Conquista while letting themselves be captured by the citys galleries of historic Latin American art. Or better yet, the Parque Natural Tayrona offers its visitors the chance to see a diverse array of wildlife as it is comprised of different

species of dry plants, moist plants, and cloudy mangroves and coral reefs in front of the coast. Furthermore, Santa Marta has a far-reaching indigenous legacy in its mountains that can be known by visitors by hiking through the paths from the valley, passing the tropical rainforest and arriving to the town of the Tayrona, a group that has inhabited this region of Colombia for hundreds of years. To enjoy crystal clear waters and relaxing beaches, we recommend that you spend a few days in Santa Marta in order to fully take advantage of the peace and beauty that this part of Colombia offers its visitors.

Villavicencio Meta
Villavicencio is the capital of the department of Meta, located at about 90 kilometers from Bogota, and is considered the entryway to the Eastern plains of Colombia, also known as Los Llanos. Characterized by its cattle-raising and farming, Los Llanos capture its visitors with its coleo (rodeo), chicken fights, and strong tradition of legends, myths, and story-telling. Above all, the charm of Los Llanos is found in its legends and myths that up to this day are delivered orally. Los Llanos is an ideal place to enjoy a great steak, as typical asados (barbecues) allow visitors to delight themselves with smoked meat while listening to traditional Llanos music. During the day we recommend that you go on a horseback riding tour in order to enjoy the beautiful landscapes and breathe the fresh air of the plains. Cali Valle del Cauca


Capital of the department of the Valle del Cauca, Cali is also known as the international capital of salsa and party, something which its visitors can feel in the citys streets as much as in its bars and dance clubs. On top of its vibrant dance culture, Calis boasts a gastronomy influenced by Spanish, indigenous, and African flavors, with a wide variety of typical plates including sancocho de gallina, tamales and tostadas de pltano con hogao. It also includes different desserts and sweets such as colaciones, gelatina and cocadas.

San Augustn Huila


In 1985 UNESCO declared the Parque Arqueolgico de San Agustn an archaeological jewel of worldwide importance. The park boasts rocks with heights up to 7 meters tall, which are believed to have been constructed by an advanced civilization that lived and disappeared 1,500 years ago, between the year 100 y 800 a.c. San Agustin is a place that retains the legacy of an indigenous society and its rocks are intended to demonstrate the duality of life: the sun and the moon, death and birth.

Organized tours allow the visitor a chance to get to know the history and legends that characterize the region and its lost civilization. The park, situated in the department of Huila, is surrounded by rising and falling hills and evergreen forests, thus allowing the visitor to enjoy a number of aweinspiring landscapes.
