A word of warning
At TiG we are fully aware that trading the financial markets is not always an easy task. It can be very risky and highly stressful. The markets can do whatever they want whenever they want, meaning there is no certainty in trading other than prices going up and down over time. We strongly recommend that all customers first use our indicators with a practice trade account. Most online brokerages can offer you some form of demo account. Our indicators analyze past data in order to indicate something which has been happening in the market. There is absolutely no guarantee that the markets will continue to produce the same results once you enter into a trade. There are literally hundreds of books published on the psychology of trading and how the mind works to manipulate the data that charts and indicators produce. We believe that all traders should practice using our indicators, placing trades based on the indicators using a demo trade account, until the trader feels happy that they can use them effectively to help them in their real trading decisions.

The TiG Moving Average Indicator

Moving averages are common place in financial trading and give the average value of price over a certain time period. The term moving refers to the fact that the average level changes as new prices are reached and this is continually reflected by the moving average line. The two most popular types of moving average are the Simple Moving Average (SMA) and the Exponential Moving Average (EMA). Simple moving averages are calculated in a very straightforward manner by adding up all of the values and then dividing by the total number of those values. Exponential moving averages are calculated in a similar way, but more importance is given to the most recent values than those which are farther away. In the case of financial trading charts, EMAs produce the best result as they consider what is happening right now. They give a more accurate representation of the most recent price action, less distortion, and can react faster to recent price changes than their SMA counterparts, thanks to their reduced lag. Although some traders do still use simple moving averages, at The Indicator Guys we much prefer the Exponential kind for all of the reasons outlined. Some popular examples of EMAs are the 8EMA, 10EMA, 21EMA, 50EMA, 100EMA and 200EMA, where the number represents the time period considered (how many candles or bars the indicator will reference). Generally speaking, 10 would be considered as a short term time period, 50 as medium term and 200 as long term. Once you own the TiG Moving Average Indicator you can place as many instances of it on your chart as you like, each with its own different time period. To do this, simply type your chosen time period into the Length input setting for each instance of the EMA you wish to install on your chart.

There are many ways to use moving averages in trading. They can be used to visualise the direction of a trend (short, medium or long term). They can be used to define potential levels of support and resistance, as price will often return to them and bounce away again. They can act as a guide to how extended a security is in terms of being overbought, oversold, or at fair value. They can be used to devise trading strategies based on short term averages crossing over long term averages. They can also be used to inform other indicators such as the popular MACD indicator.

Instructions for the TiG Moving Average

The TiG Moving Average Indicator differs from a standard moving average in that we have programmed our version to change colour in real-time based on its inclination at any point in time. When moving in a long direction (upwards) the line turns blue (by default) and when moving in a short direction (downwards) the line turns red (by default). Colours can of course be adjusted in the settings pane, as with all our indicators. By default, the TiG Moving Average Indicator comes pre-programmed with 2 EMAs, the 8 Period EMA and the 21 Period EMA. These can each be altered as required to whichever period you like, such as 50 and 200 for example. The advantage of having 2 EMAs together in the one indicator like this is that you can set an alert to be triggered on the crossover of the two moving averages. If you decide to use a moving average crossover as a part of your strategy, this can be very helpful indeed. There also is a potential advantage to using several TiG Moving Average Indicators on your chart at once, covering short, medium and long term time periods. Not only can you see all the major important trends on the same chart and visualise each of their inclinations at a glance, but you can also use this visualisation to stack the probabilities of success in your favour. For example, you could devise a trading strategy whereby you only take trades when all of four moving averages turn the same colour, in order to make sure that you are on the right side of all the major trends. So if you do want to use 4 EMAs on your chart, simply add two instances of the indicator, and set each length (time period) differently in the settings. Finally, the moving average calculation can be based on the High, Low, Open or Close by adjusting the Price setting, although the usual approach would be to use the default setting (Close). The Length setting relates to the time period of your chosen moving average, as discussed above, and this is really the most important setting to consider.
