To the victor go the spoils. And this season weve got two big winners. First, of course, is 2012 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion Brad Keselowski. Keselowski outlasted and outperformed 11 of the best drivers in the world over the 10-race stretch known as the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup. In doing so, the 28-year-old captured the first NASCAR premier series championship for owner Roger Penske and set the sport on high alert that a youth movement is upon it. Second- Winner No 2 - The fans. NASCAR needed a new champion and with Keselowski, racings image took a turn for the better. Keselowski is a hardnosed, aggressive, all out driver who has worked his way, without the definite of driver development programs, through the ranks and file to emerge as a champion. Keselowski has scraped and battled to the top, his family literally was on the brink of losing its home a few years ago after being forced to close their racing shops following decades of success in the ARCA series. Keselowski is exactly what NASCAR needed to return old fans and attract the younger generation to the stands of the worlds greatest sport. The new champion is a return to the old NASCAR to what made it such a great sport. Hes beer sloshin- not champagne slipping, hes old school to the point- not politically correct, he arrives at NASCAR functions in jeans and a tee shirt- not a suit or tux, hes tech savvy but with dirt and grease under his finger nails- not manicured and shinned and he drives like every lap is his last in his final race. Hes not stuck on his own selfimportance evident by his post-race comments after earning the worlds highest motorsports crown. Im not Big enough, Fast enough, Strong enough- no person is only a Team can do that, Keselowski uttered as beer sloshed from an oversized glass out of both sides of his mouth down his chin and onto his sponsors Miller Light driving suit. What an image perfect for Brad- perfect for his sponsor- but most of all perfect for the sport. Vermonts own Motorsports broadcasting pioneer Ken Squier was presented the prestigious NASCAR Buddy Shuman Award during the 2012 NASCAR NMPA Myers Brothers Award Luncheon last Thursday in Las Vegas during Champions Week. The Shuman award is sponsored by Federal-Moguls Champion brand of spark plugs, wipers and chemical additives. Squier is credited with convincing CBS television to undertake the first live, flag-to-flag broadcast of a NASCAR race and is widely recognized as one of the pre-eminent voices of the sport. Squier became the 56th recipient of the award, which is presented annually to an individual who has played a key role in the continued growth and success of Cup racing. Squiers broadcasting career jump started at a very young age. He announced his first stock car race, at Morrisville (Vt.) Speedway, at 14. The Voice of Vermont went on to announce and promote races at Vermont tracks throughout the 1950s and 60s. In 1960, at age 21, he built the famed quarter-mile Thunder Road International SpeedBowl in Barre, Vermont which he still co-owns and announces at weekly. Squier was also co-founder of the Motor Racing Network (MRN) in 1969. Hes now president and owner of Radio Vermont, Inc., which operates several stations in the Green Mountain State Its a throwback to True Grit as NASCAR last week announced the 2013 schedule for the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series, a slate that includes two exciting firsts: the series first race on dirt and its inaugural international event. On July 24, the trucks will make their dirt debut at Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio, the.5mile track owned by three-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion Tony Stewart. This event will be the first of two Wednesday night races for the series, joining Bristol Motor Speedways popular mid-week race on Aug. 21. Canadian Tire Motorsport Park (CTMP), a 2.459-mile, 10-turn road course in Bowmanville, Ont., will host its inaugural truck event on Sept. 1, becoming the first road-course track for the series since 2000, and ensuring a NASCAR national series presence in Canada for a seventh-consecutive season. Also beginning in 2013 as was recently announced by NASCAR, at road courses and tracks measuring 1.1 miles in length or less, the driver age restriction will be lowered to 16 years old. Currently, the minimum age to compete at the national series level is 18. The balance of the 2013 NASCAR Camping World Truck schedule, the series 19th season, maintains a familiar feel, opening with Daytona International Speedway on Feb. 22 and culminating on Nov. 15 at Homestead-Miami Speedway. Next years schedule also includes a return to Rockingham Speedway for the second consecutive season. Earlier this season, Rockingham re-joined NASCAR national series competition for the first time since 2004.

Former Joe Gibbs and Wood Brothers Racing crew chief Michael Fatback McSwain is fixin to return to the Sprint Cup Series garage next season. McSwain has been away from the sport since stepping down as crew chief for Wood Brothers/JTG Racing at the end of the 2007 season, but revealed this week that he will return to racing and field a new team in the full, 36-race Sprint Cup schedule next year, with sponsorship from Waterbury Vermont-based ice cream maker Ben and Jerrys. B & Js will support the sponsorship through sales of a special new flavor, Fastback, vanilla ice cream laced with bacon fat, hot dog slices and licorice-flavored jellybeans. Brad Keselowski won his first NASCAR Sprint Cup Series championship by 39 points over Clint Bowyer, with five-time champion Jimmie Johnson third, 40 points back of Keselowski. What the final standings dont show, however, was just how perilously close Keselowski was to losing a championship he controlled until divergent pit strategies late in Sundays Ford EcoBoost 400 at Homestead-Miami Speedway put his title in jeopardy. On Lap 158, the No. 2 Penske Dodge team made a fundamental mistake in not covering Johnsons move when the No. 48 Chevrolet came to pit road to top off the fuel tank under the third caution of the race. That put Keselowski in the position of needing two more pit stops to Johnsons one when the race restarted on Lap 162. With Johnson likely to win the race, 23rd wouldnt be good enough to win the championship. Knowing he would need to finish no worse than 16th, Keselowski turned up the wick. But fate intervened. When Johnson pitted on Lap 214, he left his stall with a loose lug nut. That required a return trip to pit road, which cost him a lap and gave Keselowski breathing room. After the second visit, Johnsons Chevy sustained a punctured oil line and subsequent gear failure that ended his night, making a champion of Keselowski with 21 laps left in the race. In a broader sense, Keselowskis title may be the point of demarcation for a significant transition in the sport. Certainly, it dealt a serious blow to Johnsons vision of his own legacy. Before his Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup started to go awry in the next-to-last race at Phoenix, Jimmy Johnson -- in a rare statement of personal ambition -- told reporters he wanted to be remembered as the greatest driver ever to sit in a stock car. The best way to do that, Johnson offered, would be to win an unprecedented eight championships. The loss to Keselowski at Homestead put a serious crimp in Johnsons plans -- and he knows it. It sucks to be close and not get it, Johnson said. Thats just the way it is. The statement I made about the eight championships is on that big wish list that we all have a wish list. The reality of that isnt something that motivates me, and Im not focused on it or think about that number. Clint Bowyer entered the seasons final race looking two points ahead, not 32. After Jeff Gordon wrecked him at Phoenix, Bowyer was fourth in the Sprint Cup standings, two points behind Kasey Kahne. But Bowyer finished second to Gordon at Homestead and not only passed Kahne but also overtook Jimmie Johnson, who entered the race second in the standings, 32 points ahead of Bowyer, but fell out in 36th place after breaking an oil line. To his surprise, Bowyer finished 39 points behind champion Brad Keselowski, one point ahead of Johnson and 16 ahead of Kahne who ran 21st Sunday thanks to a pit road speeding penalty. To be honest with you, I had no idea, Bowyer said. I didnt even think I could reach second. I was focused on two points behind the 5 (Kahne). That was my goal was we had to somehow beat the 5, and thats no easy task. Theyve been running well each and every week. Seems like Kasey will have a good day or a good weekend and then we have a good weekend and we never could really separate ourselves throughout the Chase. Seemed like one common denominator separated us for a few weekends and put us right back. Like I said, its been a fun year, and Im glad that its over. Im going to do whatever I want to do next week -- exactly whatever I want to do, whatever I feel like. Probably going to have some beers; yes, probably going to hunt something -- then have another beer. According to Dave Moodys Godfather Motorsports.com Clint Bowyer isnt about to let his hostilities with Jeff Gordon just go by the wayside. Clint Bowyer arrived in Las Vegas still steaming over the Phoenix International Raceway crash that saw his championship hopes end with an intentional trip into the Turn Four wall, courtesy of Jeff Gordon. The two did not speak during any of the Champions Week activities, with Bowyer refusing to even make eye contact. Reports yesterday indicated that Bowyer had finally agreed to bury the hatchet after a number of post-banquet cocktails, but the continued on next page

American Canadian Tour Track Fact

The 2013 ACT season will kick off with the annual NH Governors Cup 150 at the 3/8ths mile Lee USA Speedway in Lee, New Hampshire on Sunday, April 14. Lee has hosted the ACT season opener five times (2005, 2008, 2009, 2011, 2012) The American Canadian Tour first visited Lee in 1987 with the former Pro Stock Tour. Beaver Dragon and Robbie Crouch claimed the two Lee wins that year. Lee hosted 12 ACT Pro Stock events from 1987 through 1995. Ralph Nason won the final ACT Pro Stock event there. The first ever ACT Late Model Tour event at Lee USA Speedway was on September 21, 2003 and was won by Patrick Laperle. Lee has hosted a total of 10 ACT Late Model Tour events to date. Jean-Paul Cyr has earned the most money in Lee events with $15,562 in nine starts. He won the September 2005 event and has six top-10s. DJ Kennington of St-Thomas, Ontario won the Lee event in 2004 in his first and only ACT start to date. He sits second on the most money earned list at Lee with $11,530. Brian Hoar became the only driver with multiple ACT Late Model wins at Lee with his back-to-back wins in 2011 and 2012. Brent Dragon and Jamie Fisher are the only two drivers to start all 10 ACT Late Model Tour events at Lee. The ACT Late Models have run a total of 1,300 laps in the ten events (six 150s, 4 100s) Joey Polewarczyk, Jr. holds the record for the most laps led with 166. He also won the 2008 event. The fewest caution flags in a Lee event is two during the 2010 event won by Miles Chipman. It was Chipmans first and only ACT win to date. The most caution flags was 16 in the 2005 event won by Cris Michaud. Ben Rowe (2006) and Brad Leighton (2009) are the other two Lee winners.
