Fatigue Bend Test Procedure and Results

This document summarizes a fatigue test experiment. The experiment subjects a specimen to repeated bending stresses through a fatigue testing machine to determine the number of revolutions until failure under increasing weights. The goal is to determine the stress level of the given specimen that causes fatigue failure after a certain number of load cycles. Key steps include mounting the specimen in the machine and applying incremental weights while recording the number of revolutions until failure. The results will show the stress level of the specimen in lbs/mm2 that causes fatigue failure.

Title: Fatigue Test.

Object: Fatigue bend test of given specimen on fatigue testing machine. Apparatus: Fatigue testing machine, specimen, and vernier caliper. Theory: All metals both ferrous and non-ferrous have fatigue properties that are tendency to breaks when subjected to stress under specific load. If gives the relevant information of the metals fatigue properties, when it is subjected to continuous rotation at a constant speed. Material fail under repeated loading & unloading or under reversed of stress, at stresses smaller than the ultimate strength of the material under static loads. The magnitudes of the stress required producing failure decreases as the number of cycle of stress increases. This phenomenon of the decreased resistance of a material to repeated stresses is called fatigue and the testing of a material by the application of such stresses is called and endurance test. The test consists of mounting a test piece as a cantilever, the test piece is rotated and subjected to a bending moment the test piece is rotated until failure occurs or until a pre-detrained number of stresses cycle has exceeded. Procedure: 1. Place the machine on a solid and leveled surface. 2. Provide 400-440 volts, single-phase, 50 Hz Ac connections from mains. 3. Fix one end of the specimen between the gripping vice on the motor end and secure it tight with the spanner. 4. Fix the other end of the specimen between the gripping vice on the other end secure it tight with spanner. 5. Set the electronic counter to read revolution. 6. Switch on the machine by pressing the push button. 7. With this specimen starts rotating. 8. Gradually add weights on the suspended covers.

9. When the sample brakes the machine automatically stopped note the no. of revolutions registered by the counter and corresponding weights placed on the lever. Observations: S.No. Number of revolutions (rps) 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Weight (lbs)

Result: The stress of given specimen is ___lbs / mm2 Precautions: 1. Avoid stresses in the test piece other than due to applied load. 2. To avoid vibration during the test, co-axially of the test piece and the driving 3. Shaft of the testing machine should be maintained within close limits. 4. The load should be applied after the desired speed has been attained. 5. The load should be applied incrementally or continuously to obtain the desired value. 6. The relative humidity should be 50 to 80%.
