Executive Summary
An alternative path into cognition, this project aims to study meaning translation between disciplines as a way of increasing interest in scholar subjects by structuring a creative process that quantifies subjective themes into parameters that provide visual guidelines and categorizes themes for a conceptual blending with antipodal subjects. Through primary, secondary and action research, five Led Zeppelin songs are translated into five different posters illustrated with astronomic imagery. The posters are accompanied with a project book that explains the concepts in a clear and simple language, mixing the viewers personal interpretation of the posters with the intended message to provide a richer, memorable experience.

Introduction

Figure 3 Process Diagram, made by the author

Aiming to explore meaning translation between extremely different disciplines, this project tries to develop a creative process that: distills a songs textual meaning, quantifies its sensorial perception and applies the obtained data in a poster with astronomic themed imagery, in order to provoke interest on the subject and promote a thirst for scientific knowledge on the viewer. 5

Meaning Consumption

The metaphor is a (if not the most) significant resource for visual communicators. Through a sign imported from a different context, a designer can rapidly attach a previously known set of meanings to a new concept. With its increased use in the arise of Advertising (and the popularization of The Big Idea by George Lois), later sophisticated by postmodernist ideas, the technique offers the possibility of interaction between the viewer and his culture, relies on the audiences references and cognitive abilities and promotes an intellectual exercise during the cognitive process (Crow, 2003).

But what if this process is inverted? Is it possible to create interest in a subject - or even a discipline - by using it as the source of material to represent a better-understood discipline? Is sensorial perception and open visual pieces in comparison to explicit, textual, one-way communication an improbable bridge to deeper understanding?

By representing music - a subject that is both interpreted and felt - with astronomy themed visuals, the boundaries between message and language are mixed in an attempt to create a thirst for knowledge about astronomy in the audience. By choosing not to leave the message explicit in the first encounter, the designer invites the reader to generate his own initial idea of it, in order to set a ground for the concept absorption. After this idea is formed, the meant message is explained in its original form, in order to awaken the sensorial information collected before and attach it to the new textual information, enriching the cognitive experience.

This project aims to explore the process of meaning construction 6

through visual analogies between Led Zeppelin songs and astronomy themes, stressing the subjective quality of interpretation. The connection of very different subjects under broader, more general keywords gives one extra step to the cognitive process that prepares the viewer for a more intense experience, promoting an immersion that borders the fine art viewer-piece relationship (Frascara, 1988). This also exploits the open character of interpretation and how it is affected by the context in which the reader and the signs are situated (Sebeok, 2001).

The Creative Process

The project also tries to set a creative process that takes in consideration primary research data filtered under established rules in order to provide a narrowed down frame of technical, compositional and stylistic choices for the designer to draw upon during the graphic design process.

The tracks are divided into textual and sensorial interpretations, which are carried by the designer and by a primary research audience. The research outcomes are then mapped and distilled into graphic rules and thematic keywords. These keywords guide a search within a theoretical astronomy literature source, which provides the theme to illustrate the song on a language developed based on the graphic rules acquired on the sensorial interpretation research. When finished, the posters are exhibited along with a newspaper that explains the concepts addressed, inviting the viewer to learn more about the subject.

By having a subjective source of meaning (songs) quantified in a 7

questionnaire with both open and closed questions, the nature of subjectivity is stressed and a search for patterns among different interpretations is carried in order to capture a distilled essence of this meaning. On the other hand, having a scholar subject as provider for illustrations pushes the designers ability to connect extremely diverse themes under a same meaning, thus providing a better awareness of ways to improve the creative process outcome.

In the end, drawing from novel sources diversifies the paths taken during the brainstorm and feeds a possibly more innovative result, enabling further application of the model in more commercial situations.

Why Led Zeppelin?

With a 12 years life span, Led Zeppelin wrote almost one hundred songs, ranging from soft, bright tracks to dark, heavy ones, passing through hard rock, blues and even reggae. They were recognized as a super-group, made of some of the most skilled musicians and composers of their time.

This not only makes their work quite popular, which might give a certain familiarity to the tracks used in this project, it also provides a certain quality to the tracks, which allows a good interpretational process and provides a clear, defined material for the creative process. The high diversity among the tracks also enables a broader application of the concepts and a bigger challenge that increases the outcome variety.

Why Astronomy?

A discipline that brings closer to human understanding elusive and (for now) unreachable places, mostly invisible in our daily lives, astronomy gathers together most of physics subjects into an astonishing attempt to explain extremely difficult questions. Astronomy, thus, sometimes is seen with cautious eyes as an undecipherable domain, best to be seen vernacularly for its beauty, but not understood.

The lack of tangibility that this domain possesses requires a level of abstraction to understand that borders the belief sometimes, which provides a good challenge for this project, which seeks to broaden the possibility of semiotic connections between disciplines.

And finally, why Posters?

The main intent of this project is to explore the creative process that stands between input and outcome, the ways meaning can be translated and created and how interpretation is affected by situation and interest; therefore large posters are the most adequate media for this situation, since they require a synthetic visual language and provide a simple but striking viewing experience, especially when connected to music.

Methodology

Figure 4 - Process structure, made by the author

Among all 81 officially released Led Zeppelin songs, 5 tracks were selected to receive a poster interpretation: Communication Breakdown (1969), Bron-Yr-Aur Stomp (1970), No quarter (1973), The ocean (1973) and Trampled under foot (1975). Very different between themselves, these tracks are a display of how the band can produce different and innovative music, and are also very unique forms of input for the research that was performed. 10

By dividing the songs interpretation strategy between textual and perceptual and assigning a specific final role in the outcome for each, the first thematic and the latter referring to the poster look-and-feel, it is reiterated that music is a subject that allows an incredible amount of visual experimentation (Shaughnessy & House, 1999).

Sensorial Perception QUESTIONNAIRE - RATING QUESTIONS Humans cultivate the ability to create and respond to rhythm before they are confronted with the complexities of written and spoken language. The pulses, beats and vibrations of structured rhythm and melody music represent a language that is naturally felt by individuals, no matter what their geographic origin. (Woolman, 2000) The strategy adopted to formulate the first part of the questionnaire was simple and addressed the emotional aspect of music: a rating system that measures how people perceive the songs in the sensorial realm. This explores the melodic and notational qualities of the track. Each track had its characteristics divided into Theme, Structure and Ambient, with two criteria, each framed between two contrasting keywords. Theme was divided into two contrasts: fantasy vs. reality and personal vs. external; Structure into predictable vs. unpredictable and attractive vs. repulsive; Ambient into open vs. closed and bright vs. dark. This structured allows a quantification of sensorial and quite abstract qualities that provides a framing for a visual language coding afterwards. By asking the interviewees to rate these contrasting characteristics in 10 scales, a pair number, the range is limited to point to at least one characteristic, making impossible an in-between answer, like the theme is neither realistic nor fantastic. 11

The results acquired in form of an average rating calculated from all answers were organized in dimensional matrices (fig. 3), which is a useful way of sorting out data and generating clusters/groups (Gray & Malins, 2004). These matrices were then merged in a round, 6-axis graph (fig. 4) that synthesizes all of the characteristics in a more instantaneous way and provides a quicker source of reference for the translation of the data acquired. This rating section of the questionnaires is set to feed the look-and-feel of the posters, in a precise set of rules established in advance according to some visual concepts. In order to make this translation, a diagram was elaborated to guide the process (fig. 5). This diagram shows the rules to be followed during the visual construction, and the specific effects that each characteristic have on the final design. As the thematic of the song is more related to illustrational characteristics and the images formed on the perceivers mind, it was assigned to the technique utilized to visualize the astronomy theme chosen (this choice process will be explained later): 2d if the rating points to a more fantastic theme 2d illustrations appeal more to our imagination in a tridimensional gestalt (Putnam, 1991), we complete mentally the environment in which the subject is represented by interpolating the images flat planes -, while if the theme is considered more realistic, the technique used is a mixture of photography and 3d render, with a clearly established z-axis. The focus of the theme is translated into texture: a more personal theme correspond to a less texturized piece, as it is more internal, symbolically inside the persons head, with no material; if the theme is more external, that is, connected to questions of the society and global environment, the piece contains a stronger texture, which represents the materiality of it, the tactile connection of a person and its surroundings. 12

14

The structure is directly related to the poster composition, as it is connected to the overall experience that the song provides. A more predictable structure, that is: with repeating verses, choruses and traditional compasses, is analogue to a symmetric, tensionless composition, while a more surprising musical structure (developing, or with tempo-breaks, irregular compasses) is comparable to a more dynamic, unbalanced layout (Puhalla, 2011). An attractive structure, that immerses the listener throughout its development, fed into a layout that has a clearer focus on the subject, directs the viewer attention straight to a focal point; if the track, on the other hand, pushes the listener into his own world instead of the songs world, it is represented in a diffuse layout, with a more divided information focus between different areas of the poster. Finally, the music environment, or ambience - which is defined by reverb, delay, harmony, and timbre among other characteristics is the part that will influence the disposition and character of the shapes disposed on the pieces. A closed ambient, with a muddier reverb, tighter stereo field is represented by shapes that close into themselves, concave, while a open ambient translates into convex, open ended shapes. The darkness mostly related to the timbre and amount of low frequencies of the track provides the spacing between the elements and the amount of free space in the composition; the darker the song, the more clumped the layout, the brighter (more high frequencies), the more distributed.

15

Textual Interpretation QUESTIONNAIRE - OPEN QUESTIONS Right after answering each of the rating questions, the interviewee is invited to provide some words that come into his mind about the songs in the specific frame of the previous question (about theme, structure our ambient). At the end of the questionnaire that corresponds to each song there is another open question, about a general interpretation of the song. Open questions stimulate the interviewee to find verbal, and thus meaningful associations in the subject. The answers acquired in this phase are distilled into keywords (fig. 6), which then are joined with the lyrics interpretation and biographical research to feed the textual interpretation data set.

*THE DATA ACQUIRED FROM THE QUESTIONNAIRES CAN BE FOUND IN THE APPENDIX SECTION

16

BIOGRAPHIC RESEARCH After a keyword compilation for each song, used as lens for a personal textual interpretation of the lyrics, the process requires a research through a credible database of information about the context in which the lyrics were written, in order to double check the composer intentional message. For this phase, the main source of information was the book Led Zeppelin: Dazed and Confused The stories behind each song (Welch, 1998). During a thorough read and analysis of the lyrics and their contexts, the keywords acquired on the previous step are then filtered into the most adequate ones, ready to be applied on the meaning translation process.

SCIENTIFIC (ASTRONOMY) LITERATURE SEARCH Read on an earlier semester, the Astronomy and Physics literature (Nicolson, 1999) (NASA, 1974) (Cox & Forshaw, 2011) is now re-read under the recently acquired keywords filter. In search for a match in meaning, there is first a rough selection of themes based on the main keyword for each song and then a triangulation with the secondary ones to fine tune the selection. In this stage, the visual language rules determined by the rating questions are also considered as a frame for the illustration process. If a theme is not illustratable by photography or 3d, for example, and the corresponded song has been rated as realistic themed, the subject is immediately discarded. This stage can be considered a personalized Meaning Mapping. In this stage also a visual research (fig. 7) separates images that will serve as inspiration for the visualization process.

17

VISUALIZATION The chosen theme for each poster is now illustrated in 2d (fig. 8), 3d (fig. 9) or photomontage (fig. 10), according to the results acquired in the sensorial perception research. In this specific case the softwares used are Maxon Cinema 4D, Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator.

Outcomes
To compose, at least by propensity, is to give to do, not to give to hear but to give to write. The modern location for music is not the concert hall, but the stage on which the musicians pass, in what is often a dazzling display, from one source of sound to another. It is we who are playing, though still it is true by proxy; but one can imagine the concert - later on ? - as exclusively a workshop, from which nothing spills over - no dream, no imaginary, in short, no 'soul' and where all the musical art is absorbed in a praxis with no remainder. Such is the Utopia that a certain Beethoven, who is not played, teaches us to formulate - which is why it is possible now to feel in him a musician with a future. (Barthes, 1977) The ultimate product of this creative process is a set of five A2 illustrated posters, one for each song chosen, and a newspaper that situates the viewer in the project and explains each of the themes addressed by the posters, completing the information absorption process. The posters are composed with no textual element, inviting the viewer to formulate his own interpretation in relation to the song presented with each one of them. Headphones fixed on the wall play in loop the addressed tracks in an art gallery aesthetic. With a visual approach that mixes album sleeves design with fine art posters, the collection represents a portal where music invites the viewer to learn more about a scholar discipline, while getting more in touch with its significations. The first contact with the subject induced through music and strong imagery eases the process, grabbing the viewers attention and slowly immersing him in a trip through a conceptual bridge made of the main keywords acquired on the questionnaires, which connects a songs textual meaning to an astronomy concept. 20

22

Figure 15 - Trampled under foot poster

The projects main intention was fulfilled in a satisfactory fashion, in a sense that the creative process produced successfully an array of subjects that connected seamlessly with the original inputs. The experimentation with very different disciplines provided a practical proof that meaning is formed not by a sign only, nor by a context only, but by an intricate relationship between viewer and piece mediated by the paradigm (Crow, 2003). The poster is a source for the viewers imagination to compose his picture. The image itself doesnt mean anything, as the visual language doesnt mean anything. Its all connected in the viewers mind and the composition is made regarding his background, his memories, his taste and his perception of the song he is listening to at the moment. This first composition is his property, so a starting emotional link is made with the subject. 23

With his authorial image ready, the viewer is invited to read the project book, which is presented in the form of a newspaper, a humble, charming way to communicate an idea that wants to be seen as simple. This newspaper contains information gathered from the astronomy literature research carried; it explains the scientific concepts chosen to illustrate the posters. In a lighthearted, simple language, the explanations tend to have a humorous touch that make the concepts easier to understand and captures the readers attention. In this way, by mixing his first interpretation with the intended concept, a third, hybrid message is made, a personalized message that is held much closer to the viewers heart, more entrenched in his memory due to a richer and longer experience. Hopefully, the viewer will be more interested in astronomy by the end of the encounter. Maybe he will, at least, remember the subjects and be more familiarized with them the next time he gets in touch with them, which might facilitate a further knowledge absorption. This process can be applied to more commercial objectives, as the beauty in it is the risk of taking a longer path to reach a deeper spot in the audience consciousness. It also is a way of achieving new results through conversations between disciplines that would unlikely meet in a regular brainstorm. It would be nice to see communication that, instead of just sending a message, starts sending a message and teaching something interesting at the same time, communication that enriches the audience culture or increases its acceptance towards subjects that are seen as boring or difficult but hold many interesting, enlightening topics.
