KL FESTIVAL EXPERIMENTAL FILM FESTIVAL: DEFRAMED

Collaboration: Teoh Eng Hooi and Fairuz Sulaiman (DAM Interactive) The theme of `De frame was explored in this performance piece on two layers which are audio and visuals. Teoh is a professional sound designer and musician in the genre of ambient electronica. He led with his composition as he generated music during the performance. Fairuz, on the other hand, generated visuals based on the soundscapes Teoh created. Fairuz begins the visuals with a colour bar. As the music develops, so do the visuals. He overlaps the main image (colour bar) with video clips on his video palatte. For the show, he played with 3 videos; a running man, a lovers embrace and water movement. Both artists, especially Teoh, who is a sound composer for a post-production house; finds the idea of `de-framing a time-based media like sound and video very liberating. The improvisation created by the collaboration of sound and visuals allowed the artists to explore the unexpected.

CHILL ZONE: PUBLIC ART INSTALLATION WITH SURFACE PROJECTION

Collaboration: Callen Tham, KONTAK and Fairuz Sulaiman (DAM Interactive)

Padang Astaka, Selangor; converted into a festival ground for the 2012 Urbanscape. The open field became a basking ground for thousands of youth eager to bask in the bazaars, open air concerts and gigs. The main attraction was Sigur Ros and Yuna. The openness of the site became the idea generator for this public art installation. Commissioned by Urbanscapes, KONTAK! + Callen Tham created a public art

sculpture that gave a space for people to relax. The public art-space was created using timber crate platforms that were arranged around the existing trees into booths, seating and terraces. The focus piece was the DJ counsel with graphic video projections. The visuals provided by Fairuz Sulaiman were mapped onto the counsel. Part of the visuals involved graphics that were triggered from the music itself, like the equalizer effect on an audio player. The timber crates proved to be a challenging projection surface because it was uneven and had gaps. Despite this, it resulted in textured visuals of depth when the gaps created a `light flare effect when some of the projector light beams shot right through it. Overall, everyone enjoyed the relaxed environment under the trees as it provided temporary solace from the festivals high adrenaline. The projection mapping created a good visual focus point as people relaxed to music.

Its an explosion of visual and sound as the duos worked hand in hand.
