Happy Holidays and Great News!

I want to take this opportunity to thank all of you for the truly incredible job you have done to bring transformational learning to the thousands of young people we educate each day. There is not a single student in our system who is not feeling the benefits from you, the exceptional community of educators who make up the Education Achievement Authority of Michigan. What is happening in these schools is a real game changer, and I could not be prouder of you or more confident in the future.

Having said that, I am fully aware that there is much concern relative to whether there is sufficient support for the Education Achievement Authority and the work we are doing. We were all disappointed that the EAA was not codified as a statewide system of schools during the lame-duck session of the Michigan State Legislature, and that we did not make the final list of awardees for Race to the Top funding by the United States Department of Education.

Although both of these events were an unfortunate way to end the calendar year, there are many great things happening of a positive nature. I am very pleased to tell you that the Governor has advised me that House Speaker Bolger and Senate Majority Leader Richardville have agreed to each bring a busload of legislators to EAA Schools when they return to session. EAA legislation will be the top legislative priority when they return in January. Additionally, Governor Snyder has asked me to hold January 10, 2013 at 3:30 pm for a Town Hall meeting being planned just for EAA. He will be joined by State Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Mike Flanagan, Michigan Education Excellence Foundation (MEEF) Chairman Steve Hamp, and others from his team who wish to outline the strategy to support our work and ensure the replication of student centered learning throughout the state.

You understand better than anyone the financial shortfall we have experienced which has impeded our operations. The State Superintendent advised me today that he is recommending a special advance of nearly $6 million, and also expects to decide favorably on another $4 million in Technology grant applications which will be awarded in January and February. Further, I have been advised by the Chairman of MEEF that a

major private foundation grant is expected to be announced at or near the calendar year-end.

With each passing day, more parents, and community leaders are being inspired by your work and asking how they can support us with time and money. Together, we will overcome disappointment and setbacks, and stay focused on bringing learning excellence to our children so they may have a future where they realize their highest potential.

With this renewed sense of commitment and demonstrated support for the EAA, let us go to our respective homes and enjoy our own children and families, returning next month confident and in high spirits. You and the entire EAA can be assured that our efforts are being noticed, appreciated, and sustained. I will get back with you as soon as possible with more details for the upcoming town hall meeting.

Wishing you and yours a happy and blessed holiday season.
