*2013* VIRGINIA ADVISORY COUNCIL ON MILITARY EDUCATION (VA-ACME) SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

VA-ACME will award multiple $1,000 scholarships at its VA-ACME Conference on March 28, 2013 at the Hilton Oceanfront in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Interested participants must read the eligibility criteria and comply with the submission deadline for applications. All VA-ACME scholarship applications and attachments must be post-marked by February 4, 2013. Incomplete applications will not be considered. Awardees will be notified in March 2013 by phone and by e-mail. All payments will be made directly to the student. Members of the VAACME Board, VA-ACME Scholarship Committee and their families are not eligible for any of these awards. There are five different scholarship categories. Scholarship applicants must either reside or work in Virginia. 1. Active Duty, Drilling Reservist, or National Guard Member - $1,000


Definition: This scholarship is open only to U. S. Uniformed Service members (active duty, drilling reservist, or National Guard) who have completed Basic Military Training or Officer Candidate School. Only the winners will be required to provide proof of military status. Criteria for Selection: a. Enrolled in a regionally or nationally accredited institution of higher education operating in the Commonwealth of Virginia and certified by SCHEV (State Council of Higher Education for Virginia) at http://www.schev.edu/. b. Assigned to a military installation in Virginia. c. Currently pursuing a certificate, associate, baccalaureate, or graduate degree program. d. GPA must be 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale. e. Must complete requisite essay, not to exceed two pages and double-spaced.

Submit Application Package to Include the Following: a. VA-ACME scholarship application form. b. Unofficial transcript(s). c. ONE Letter of Recommendation from Commanding Officer or Department Head, who can attest to your motivation, character, and integrity. d. Evidence of enrollment (such as the institutions letter of acceptance). e. Essay. Essay Topic: How will your education goals enhance your military career?

2. Spouse of Active Duty Member, Drilling Reservist, National Guard, Veteran, or Military Retiree - $1,000
Definition: Scholarship is open to spouses of active duty, drilling reservist, National Guard, veterans, and military retirees. Only the winners will be required to provide proof of military status. Criteria for Selection: a. Enrolled in a regionally or nationally accredited institution of higher education operating in the Commonwealth of Virginia and certified by SCHEV (State Council of Higher Education for Virginia) at http://www.schev.edu/. b. Attending school in Virginia. c. Currently pursuing a certificate, associate, baccalaureate, or graduate degree program. d. GPA must be 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale. e. 3. Child of Active Duty Member, Drilling Reservist, National Guard, Veteran, or Military Retiree - $1,000
Definition: Scholarship is open to children of active duty, drilling reservist, National Guard, veterans, and military retirees. Only the winners will be required to provide proof of military status. Criteria for Selection: a. Enrolled in a regionally or nationally accredited institution of higher education operating in the Commonwealth of Virginia and certified by SCHEV (State Council of Higher Education for Virginia) at http://www.schev.edu/. b. Attending school in Virginia. c. Currently pursuing a certificate, associate, baccalaureate, or graduate degree program. d. GPA must be 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale. e. 4. Permanently disabled military member or family member (spouse or child) or family member of service member missing/killed in action - $1,000
Definition: This scholarship is open only to U. S. Uniformed Service Members (active duty, drilling reservist, or National Guard), who have completed Basic Military Training or Officer Candidate School and who are permanently disabled, family member of permanently disabled military member, or family member of service member missing/killed in action. Only the winners will be required to provide proof of military status and additional documentation. Criteria for Selection: a. Enrolled in a regionally or nationally accredited institution of higher education operating in the Commonwealth of Virginia and certified by SCHEV (State Council of Higher Education for Virginia) at http://www.schev.edu/. b. Resident of Virginia. c. Currently pursuing a certificate, associate, baccalaureate, or graduate degree program. d. GPA must be 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale. e. 5. Veteran or retiree of the Armed Forces working or residing in Virginia - $1,000


Definition: This scholarship is open only to veterans or retirees of the U. S. Uniformed Service to include the National Guard who have been honorably discharged. Only the winners will be required to provide proof of military status. Criteria for Selection: a. Enrolled in a regionally or nationally accredited institution of higher education operating in the Commonwealth of Virginia and certified by SCHEV (State Council of Higher Education for Virginia) at http://www.schev.edu/. b. Resident of Virginia. c. Currently pursuing a certificate, associate, baccalaureate, or graduate degree program. d. GPA must be 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale. e. Must complete requisite essay, not to exceed two pages and double-spaced. 3

typed, double-spaced, size 12 font; not to exceed two pages.)

Note: Only the winners will be required to provide proof of military status. The proof will be one of the following: Leave and Earnings Statement (LES), Military ID Card, or DD-214. Please block out the Social Security Number. Permanently disabled service members will need to provide proof of disability from the Department of Veterans Affairs, and for service member missing/killed in action, the Family Member will need to provide a Report of Casualty DD Form 1300.
