Cameron Art Museum Presents the 8th Annual Civil War Living History Weekend Saturday, Feb. 9 and Sunday Feb. 10 starting at 10 am and Kids @ CAM
Wilmington, NC When President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation effective January 1, 1863 it authorized the engagement of African American soldiers in the Civil War. And on May 22, 1863, the Bureau of Colored Troops was established under General Order No. 143 to coordinate and organize regiments from all parts of the country. This coordination effectively impacted the war through 39 major engagements and more than 400, lesser ones fought by the United States Colored Troops (USCT) in support of the Union Army. Twenty-five African American soldiers received the Medal of Honor in addition to their white officers. One such event was the Battle of Forks Road which led to the fall of Wilmington. For the 8th consecutive year Cameron Art Museum will present the Annual Civil War Living History Weekend which commemorates the 148th anniversary of Battle of Forks Road. This significant Battle will be re-enacted by uniformed Union, U. S. Colored Troop and Confederate re-enactors of the skirmish. The weekends activities will also include an opening ceremony on Saturday, February 9. Additionally on the museum's historic site will be two days of historic-themed sutlers, period music, family fun and more.
