Process or Production?
This past Sunday we took a look at Jesus statements concerning the Vine and the Branches from John 15. Im continuing my series titled Live Love. There have been many excellent sermons preached from these famous verses over the centuries. My hope was to approach them from a new perspective; process versus production. Most of the sermons Ive heard over the years have had a production emphasis anchored to John 15:2: He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful. Fixating on verse 2 alone, out of context with the rest of the chapter is an effective way to produce fruit inspectors. Experts at examining the quality and quantity of fruit in their own live . . . Am I fruitful? Am I fruitful enough? Usually finding ourselves lacking, we come to the conclusion that we need to work harder, be more faithful, more disciplined and more obedient. Or worse yet, we begin examining how fruitful others are while determining what they need to do to increase their production. I dont believe that the context of chapter 15 is about production, not surprisingly, I think it is about process. The process of remaining connected to our source of life, Jesus the Vine. Relationships like fruit are a process, they take time and they require connection. So, how does this apply to living love? Simply, it is a lot easier to love people if you see them as being in process. Its hard to live love if youre preoccupied with how much fruit your life is producing. Its very difficult to live love if youre preoccupied with how much fruit someone elses life is producing. Love is other focused. As a pastor Ive discovered that I cant make someone else fruitful. However, my love for them might increase their desire to remain grafted into The Vine. Could there a better way to Live Love? Live Loved, Tom
