Macquarie City Campus celebrates five year milestone

On Friday 18 January, students, staff and alumni gathered to celebrate and recognise the fifth anniversary of Macquarie City Campus. The event also recognised the latest group of valedictorians to graduate from Macquarie Universitys CBD Campus. Macquarie Universitys newly appointed Vice-Chancellor Professor Bruce Dowton also took the opportunity to touch upon his vision for Macquarie City Campus; as a key player in the growth and development of Macquarie University. I look forward to a time when we will have an even more robust presence in the city, we are a Sydney university; we are an Australian University, we should be thoroughly international and distinctively Australian, which is what I believe [Macquarie City Campus] helps us to do, Professor Dowton said. With the iconography of the centre of Sydney, we are extraordinarily well positioned to do that. he said. Macquarie City Campus Director Nathan Asher said that over the past five years the City Campus has seen exponential growth. The dual campus structure has allowed Macquarie to gain traction in catchment areas and international markets traditionally held by its competitors. Macquarie City Campus students are looking for a different experience than the North Ryde campus offers; they tend to be less focused on the social and recreational facilities available at the main campus. They want the prestigious Macquarie degree, but in a more convenient CBD location, and delivered in a more intimate learning environment, Mr Asher said. Macquarie City Campus also provides domestic students outside of Macquaries traditional catchment areas access to specific Macquarie degree programs. Students from the Southern and Western suburbs of Sydney who, because of the commute, may have opted to attend another university are now able to consider Macquarie as a first choice. We have found that as our profile rises, we are increasingly getting students from suburbs that would generally have had low numbers of Macquarie students. Some of our students also work in the CBD, and this campus allows them to more easily balance the work/life dynamic, Mr Asher said. After 5 years, Macquarie City Campus is the CBD arm of the iconic, thoroughly international and distinctly Australian, Macquarie University community. ------ENDS------
