2012 Volunteer Awards

Congratulations to our Volunteer Award winners for 2012. Winners will receive their certificates at a special presentation during the Squash Vic AGM on Friday 12 April at the Sebel Citigate, Albert Park. Lucas Bediaga Lucas succeeded his time as treasurer of the Melbourne University Squash Club with a successful nomination for President in 2012. In addition to the regular tasks of a president, Lucas had to deal with the Universitys decision to renovate the sports centre, including the squash courts. Lucas was able to negotiate a number of temporary homes for the club to train and play, all the while maintaining ongoing communication with club members. Lucas also provided strong support for the clubs 5 Hits & Giggles programs. The Melbourne Uni programs were so successful that the coaches were nominated for the Victorian Governments 2012 Community Sport & Recreation Awards and the club featured as a case study for Squash Vics VicHealth women & girls project. Kevin Healy Kevin has strongly been involved within the Mildura squash community for many years and of particular note recently served as President of Mildura Squash Inc from 2008 to 2011. Although no longer President he still remains a very active member of the Mildura Squash Inc committee. Kevin was instrumental in the re establishment of the Mildura Squash Inc committee in 2008 when Milduras last private courts closed and squash shifted to the Irymple Community Leisure Centre. Although Mildura Squash only has two courts, it has a strong base and all of the programs would not be in such good stead if it were not for Kevins contribution. Jodi Wilkinson Jodis association with racquetball is not as a player, but as an avid spectator and supporter of the sport. Jodi has been the official photographer at the last 4 ESRA finals that have been played as well as taking photos at the Victorian Open 2012. She is always offering to help, whether its organising raffle prizes, fetching food platters or simply supporting and encouraging players. Penry Green Penry has been President of the Victorian Squash League for more than 20 years. He has held the area competition together which would not have survived without his personal involvement and the loyalty he engendered in the other VSL committee members. Although the keeper of tradition, Penry is open to change and prepared to implement new ideas to progress the sport. Despite no longer being an active player he has a deep personal commitment to the game.

Colleen Bell Colleen is valued by the Portland Squash & Racquetball Club, committee, staff and players for her many years of involvement. She has held positions of committee member, junior and senior pennant representatives, is currently treasurer and assists with all competitions, functions and working bees the club has held over the years. Colleen is a very popular life member, beginning her playing days at the club in 1974. She has a terrific can do attitude and has been known to play at short notice up to 6 times a week, always encouraging and assisting players throughout her matches. Thomas Nguyen Tom is an integral part of squash at Monash Uni. As club secretary in 2012 he played a major role in the promotion of squash and our club, keeping existing members up to date on current activities, actively recruiting new members and ensuring all members have access to club benefits. Tom is always at the club practise sessions ensuring new members feel welcome and liaising with existing members. His passion for squash and the Club is evidenced by the time and energy he dedicates to promoting and playing the sport. Carolyn Ayres Carolyn has made an enormous contribution to the Mountain District Club and squash over more than 20 years. She has been a major contributor to its social and organisational strength. Her work with juniors has seen the club develop and sustain a junior program and as coordinator, her school teams amass multiple school championships. In addition, Carolyn edits the club newsletter and is tournament director for the long running, annual Mountain District Open Squash Championship.

Squash Vic Visits Youth Justice Centres

Development Coordinator Tegan Doherty visited the Parkville Youth Justice Centre in early January 2013 to conduct Squash Clinics with the youths who preside there. Tegan introduced 6 of the different units of 15 18 year old men to a modified version of Squash within the centre, with only 4 of the 60 participants having ever played or seen Squash played before. Many of the participants enjoyed trying a new and different activity for recreation time and found it a great work out. Tegan also enjoyed the unique experience, saying that its not every day you get to introduce youths in that environment to a new activity and was happy to have provided them with the opportunity to try something different. Tegan will also be visiting Malmsbury Youth Justice Centre in January.
