THE FEAST OF THE PURIFICATION OF MARY / PRESENTATION IN THE TEMPLE !Midwinter Cometh! - !Candlemas vs. Groundhog Day!
This weekend we have two wonderful events that touch the journey of our Liturgical, Sanctoral Year: The Feasts of The Purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary / the Presentation in the Temple on February 2 when we reached the midway point of Winter!!!!! Yeah!!!!! Half way to Spring!!!!! Christians traditionally celebrated Candlemas as a festival day to honor the Presentation of Jesus in the Temple to be dedicated to God. In keeping with Jewish custom, this ritual took place 40 days after His birth. On our current calendar, this comes on Feb. 2, falling 40 days after Christmas. Christians celebrated the day with candles to commemorate the light of Jesus coming into the world. In the Catholic Church, this day is also called the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord or the Purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It is celebrated with a procession and the blessing of candles. The day also marks the end of the season of Epiphany, which commemorates the visit made by the Three Kings to the infant Jesus. It took place 40 days after his birth as Jewish law required. According to Mosaic law, a mother who had given birth to a boy was considered unclean for seven days. Also, she was to remain 33 days "in the blood of her purification." Luke tells us, quoting Exodus 13:2,12, that Mary and Joseph took Jesus to Jerusalem because every firstborn child was to be dedicated to the Lord. They sacrificed a pair of doves or two young pigeons, showing that Mary and Joseph were poor. The Feast of the Presentation-Purification prefigures the coming of Spring. It also prefigures the sufferings of Christ as Savior, prophesized by Simeon and Anna in the Temple: "Behold, this child is destined for the fall and rise of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be contradicted (and you yourself a sword will pierce) so that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed." (Luke 2:34-35) The words of Simeon do emphasize the themes of LIGHT and HOPE in this feast. "Now, Master, You may let Your servant go in peace, according to Your word, for my eyes have seen
Your salvation, which You prepared in sight of all the peoples, a light for revelation to the (Luke 2:29-32) Gentiles, and glory for Your people Israel." In pre-Christian times, Feb. 2 was a day of celebration known as the "Festival of Lights". Coming at one of the four "cross-quarters" of the year, midway between the winter solstice and the spring equinox, it heralded the coming of spring. Candles were lit to symbolize the return of the sun and lengthening days after the long months of winter darkness. The Christian feast took the place of the ancient cult celebrations of Roman Hedgehog Day and Irelands Groundhog Day. In its earliest version, Groundhog Day was Imbolc, a pagan celebration associated with fertility and weather divination. The word Imbolc is Gaelic, the language of the Celts. Candlemas was the feast of Mary's purification and was marked by a candle procession. The ties between purification rituals and the month of February also hark back to the pagan era. Indeed, our very word, "February," which is derived from Latin, unmistakably designates the month as a time for purification (februa means "expiatory offerings"). The Lupercalia, a pagan Roman purification ritual, took place in Feb. And such beliefs survived the Christianization of Europe (going "underground," if you will), attaching themselves to Candlemas Day as folklore. In Spanish speaking countries the blessing of statues of Baby Jesus is also celebrated! The Feast of Saint Blaise is given special recognition on February 3, not only with a feast day, but with a unique ceremony that parallels the practice of anointing the sick... the Blessing the Throats of those with throat disorders and anyone who wishes to avoid getting such a malady (or something related to the throat, even the words one speaks; (Psalm 5:10). The blessing is usually done by priests (deacons/other ministers may also serve). It is considered a sacramental of the Church. In accord with various traditions, Saint Blaise was born to rich and noble parents, and received a Christian education. He was a physician before being consecrated a bishop at a young age. During the persecution of Licinius, Blaise, receiving some divine command, moved from town and lived as a hermit in a cave. He healed anyone who was sick and wounded. One day, a group of hunters discovered Saint Blaise and seized him. He was being taken to the Agricolaus, the governor of Cappadocia and Lesser Armenia, and while in prison he miraculously cured a small boy who was choking to death on a fishbone lodged in his throat. .A Christian woman gave Saint Blaise candles so that his cell would have light and he could read the sacred Scriptures thus we use candles for blessing on the Feast of Saint Blaise!
We will have the Blessing of Throats after all the Masses today in the Chapel!

2013 Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal The Lord Sustains His People
Bishop Conlons mailing asking for a pledge to the 2013 Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal arrived in many of our parish households in early January. This Appeal is conducted at every parish in our seven-county diocese. The funds contributed help people in our parish and throughout our diocese. It is very important to ensure that the Diocese of Joliet has the funds necessary to do Gods work. This year, the theme of the Appeal is The Lord Sustains His People. God constantly gives to us. His grace is ever present. His blessings are abundant. We can demonstrate our gratitude to God and help build the kingdom of God in our own parish and our own diocese by making a generous gift to the CMAA. In addition to helping those in need, the Appeal funds the operations of the diocese and services that are of great help to the ministries here in our parish. If you have already made your pledge or contribution, thank you.

The next SJB Texas Holdem School Fundraiser will be held on Saturday, March 2nd, 2013. The past games have raised over $14,000 for the school and have been great fun for all that have attended. We are anticipating another great turnout, so please reserve your seats ASAP by contacting Jim Pellicane at jimpellicane@comcast.net . As in the past, we are in need of volunteer dealers to help deal the games. The dealers have just as much fun as the players since the games are very lighthearted and friendly. We have a professional dealer train each volunteer before the game so even if you dont know how to play or deal, you can still volunteer and learn. Please contact Jim Pellicane if you are interested in dealing. Jim can be reached at jimpellicane@comcast.net or at 630-740-0930. We are also in need of items to make this night a terrific success. Donations of plates, napkins, pop, beer and baked goods are always appreciated. Donations can be dropped off at the school office anytime (except baked goods please drop off at Sebahar Hall on March 2nd at 5:00 p.m.) Please label your donations. And, please invite all your friends and family to play!

We are inviting all 5th-12th grade students to participate in a re-enactment of the Passion of the Christ (Living Stations). What are Living Stations? Imagine the whole church dark, and then spotlights come on and you are transported back to Golgatha, where Jesus was nailed to the cross. Living stations recreates 14 stations. All the stations are acted out by students dressed in costumes of the era while a student narrates the scene. Therefore, most scenes require no learning of lines. Why be a part of it? It will be Lent, so do something wonderful for God. Plus, its a lot of fun, just ask any former cast members. Its also a great way to make friends and great memories. When? Practices will take place in the Church on: Sunday, February 10: 4:30p-5:30p Sunday, February 17: 4:30p-5:30p Sunday, February 24: 4:30p-5:30p Sunday, March 3: 4:30p-6:00p Sunday, March 10: 4:30p-6:00p Sunday, March 17: 4:30p-6:00p Sunday, March 24: 4:30p-6:00p March 25 & March 27 (Holy Week): 4:00p6:00p Performance: Good Friday at 7:00 p.m. Contact Jenniphergraf@gmail.com with any questions (630)293-4899. There will be no practice during Spring Break.
